...The American Dream: An American Constant As a newborn child lies in his mother’s arms in an American hospital following his birth, he doesn’t possess courtesy to be grateful for the gifts bestowed upon him; this baby hasn’t merely been given life. This infant has been given an opportunity that we have come to know as The American Dream. This ideal will be held constant in the mind of this moments old baby as soon as he is mature enough to yearn and desire the concept of gain. America is widely believed to be a land of opportunity, so the concept of The American Dream is an ethos taken to heart in almost every being who respects America. Every day, people set out to achieve their full potential and succeed. Though, in America we are blessed with freedom, I feel the assumption that being free yields success and happiness is a false premise. I believe the only way to define true success of this ideal is unconditional happiness and success. To achieve this dream proves nearly impossible; as humans, we instinctively desire more. Success, like the concept of The American Dream, is truly subjective. We go to different colleges, have different majors, and surround ourselves with different people; how can success truly be defined? To me, The American Dream proves to be more hope and incentive to better yourself and your family for future generations to come. In respect to the subjectivity of the term, The American Dream will always mean different things to different people. As a...

...Many immigrants are tired of getting paid less when they can go to the United States to earn a better wage. In the homeland of immigrants, they have poor health care compared to the United States. Similarly, the protagonist Lourdes, from the novel Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, faces the difficult choice of leaving her family and immigrating to the United States illegally. The prospects of obtaining a better paying job, allowing an individual’s child to continue his or her education, and the opportunity provide a better life for one’s family exemplify reasons why struggling individuals immigrate to the United States. The first reason why immigrants come to the United States is to search for better paying jobs. In the article by Daniel Stein, he states that the presence of a large illegal workforce discourages Americans from seeking those jobs. This allows the immigrants an opportunity to achieve a better paying job. Many immigrants were professionals back in their countries. Immigrants would get ahead of themselves and believe that the United States would provide better paying jobs, but they were wrong. Immigrants become desperate to find a decent job to send money back home, such as clothes and food. The novel Enrique’s Journey, Lourdes states “she fills a wooden box with gum, crackers, and cigarettes. A good job is out of the question” (Nazario 4). Immigrants came here to the United States to better themselves and their families, but they...

...January 29, 1989 Enrique, five years old and his sister, Belky, seven years old are left by their single mother Lourdes, twenty-four in Tegucigalpa Honduras. Their mother is in search of a better way of life for herself and two young children. She travels north to the United States by way of a smuggler in search of the American Dream (Nazario, 2014). Upon her arrival she finds that the states do not immediately provide the life she dreamed of based on the images she had seen on television. Lourdes struggles just to make ends meet and back home in Tegucigalpa her children long for her while continuing to suffer in poverty. The neighborhood where Enrique lives with his mother is considered to be one of the poorest in Tegucigalpa. Lourdes tries to provide for her family by working inconsistent laborious jobs; doing others laundry, selling tortillas, used clothes and plantains, she also sells odds and ends on the streets (Nazario, 2014). Enrique is often with his mother as she endures the rough streets of Honduras, while she barters on the sidewalks Enrique often plays on the sidewalk. In Enrique’s current situation it is highly unlikely he will matriculate past elementary school. He too will have to work laborious jobs to help support the family, supplying food and basic necessities. Although a life of poverty is what has been destined for Lourdes, she wants Enrique and Belky to have a chance at a better life, however, in order to provide what they need she has to find...

...In Chapter 6 of Enrique’s Journey, Enrique has finally made it to the boarder of Mexico and Texas at the Rio Grande River. This chapter is about the beginning of Enrique’s life in America. During this chapter I found a few more key points. The first key point in the chapter came up when Enrique was crossing the Rio Grande River. I think about how many immigrants cross that boarder every day and are killed trying to make their dreams come true by coming to America. In the book is says that “Up to three migrants have drowned in a single day along this stretch of river.” What amazes me about this statement is that they say “this stretch of the river.” That means that even more die along other parts of the river which is probably a pretty high...

...in their home country; many immigrants would be stuck in poverty if they never take the chance to cross. Therefore, until every socioeconomic problem in every Latin American country is solved, Hispanics are going to find reasons to immigrate, and they are willing to take on the risk of being undocumented, as documentation can be difficult to obtain. However, there are some documentation routes, such as DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. However, DACA is not a pathway to citizenship, and it is costly, as it is $465 to apply and renew. There have been efforts by the US government to end DACA in the future; however, judicial action has let people continue to renew it...
