...Ben Mammel Mrs. S Mann English 1501.1 30 September 2013 Compare/Contrast: Dillard and Rodriguez In Annie Dillard’s “American Childhood” and in Luis Rodriquez’s “Always Running” both share similarities. Both are autobiographies that involve children running from an adult, both stories paint vivid descriptions of their communities and childhood memories. The authors also dramatize their stories to make them more exciting Although Dillard and Rodriquez share many similarities the two stories differ. The most significant contrast about the stories is the environment the children grew up in. In an “American Childhood” Dillard grew up in a middle class neighborhood with nothing to be afraid of, on the other spectrum Rodriquez spent his childhood running from “gangs” “junkies” “police” and even “teachers. The titles itself contrast drastically, “An American Childhood” sounds pleasant, enjoyable, and cliché whereas “Always Running” sounds hopeless, tiring, and dangerous. Descriptions in the stories show how the environments differ, in “Always Running” Rodriquez describes constant abuse that Luis and Tito go through in paragraph 26 “We were constant prey” “sometimes the teachers who jumped on us Mexicans as if we were born with a hideous stain”. In an “American Childhood” it can be inferred that it is a more privileged environment because the man that chased Dillard left his car with his keys in the ignition to chase after kids...

...I am writing this letter to you to assure you of the issue of the basketball court being very slippery. I’m sure that you are already aware of this problem, but it needs to be resolved as soon as possible. Many accidents happen every day such as people falling and people running into others while playing basketball. Most people have learned by now not to run fast on the court or else you are almost guaranteed to fall down. The basketball court being slippery also makes it very difficult to play defense and offense because you have to focus more on not falling, rather than playing the game of basketball. Even though you may disagree, the courts being slippery is a problem; however, you can put in concrete, use chemicals, or build a whole other court....

...I have been on the bench with no playing time, and believe me,it's not very entertaining.Like on my fourth grade basketball team, that I barley made. Even though I was basically the water girl, I learned some very important things. They help me every day through life. I always remember three things when I am on the basketball court. These “things” are my laws of life. One of the first things I learned was I have to work for what I want. I can't just lay around and expect everything to me handed to me. I learned that if I wanted that playing time, I would have to work on my game. I had to out work all of the other girls to take there spot. If I didn’t work hard, there was no way I would even step on the court.I had to be determined to play and...

...played for the Richmond high school basketball team and he decides he wants to coach them. The players on his team have no respect and think they can do whatever they want. Timo Cruz is one of the main characters in this movie, he gets kicked off before Carter hands out his contracts and he quits once more during the season. Another main character is Kenyon Stone, he has struggles involving his girlfriend being pregnant and trying to go to college and play basketball there. Carter gives out his a contract to all his players and he actually takes them seriously which the school doesn’t like because basketball is the only thing most of these kids have. This contract forces these kids to go to class and maintain a certain average in order to play. The team starts off great winning its first 14 games but Carter soon finds out from progress reports that most of his players aren’t maintaining the required grades so he decides to cancel all team activities and locks the court until the team raises their grades. This makes the whole community angry and it eventually leads to him getting fired but the players still want him as a coach so he stays. One of the issues from Coach Carter is teenage pregnancy. Keynon Stone gets his girlfriend pregnant and now has to plan out his life like whether or not he’s going to go to college to play basketball or stay home with his girlfriend and take care of the baby. ...The Responsibility Project Lorraine A. Garcia ETH/316 May 20, 2013 Glenn H. DeAtley, J.D. The Responsibility Project “The Home Team” is a great short film reflecting the team comradery of the Murray State Racers basketball team. This film reflects the coaches and players perspective, as well as, the community’s love of the game, players, and traditions. This is not only just an extra curriculum event for these people this is an event that brings out families across all areas in the city. They have had a very successful team over they years and when entering the gym and the many banners reflecting their championships are a reflection of that. One of the issues that was brought up in the field was that of the importance of the game. Restaurants and people reflecting the school colors, signs being changed to show the support that they have for the team and the town almost completely shutting down in order to attend home games were expressed and shown. These are sure signs that the support that they have for the team is huge. Being a small town, Murray thrives on talking and living and breathing basketball and it was actually stated on the film that it is what Murray, Kentucky on the map. The players spoke about how when they came into the school their freshman year they were treated as family from everyone and feel that everyone in the town are friends. Coach Steve Proham said that he witnessed that the players, as well as him, are in embraced as family...

...The Physics of Basketball Basketball isn't as easy as people depict it to be. Basketball physics is fairly irrelevant. Most people who study the physics of basketball get deep into the art of shooting, passing, and dribbling instead of actually playing the sport. There are many aspects to the physics of basketball. I have five aspects I would like to discuss. The shot, shooting a free throw, the spin, dribbling, and passing. First I would like to talk about the game of basketball all around. Basketball was created James Naismith in 1891. Basketball is a team sport that requires two teams of five players that try to score by shooting a round ball through a hoop ten feet high. The game is played on a rectangular-shaped floor, this floor...

...American backgrounds integrating into the game of basketball, I wonder how these international translations are in turn changing the game we see at home. In Latin America, where the climate and geographies are so much different than the one in the United States, we find growth in basketball. Though the NBA in Latin America is growing, it is still not a hit in Central and South America. Though whenever you go either it is Latin America, China, America, etc… there is always someone playing the game. Even in the likes of Mexico, they are mostly known for militant based political revolution than anything else, but basketball courts do exist. The courts might be used for other things like farming during the day, but you will always see some kid playing and working on his game. Just like what I do when I am in my hometown hooping outside of my house, no court just the concrete and the hoop I have next to my garage. The growth of basketball throughout Latin America region is unexpected, only because they compete for national attention in their number one sport soccer. Basketball has to compete in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Brazil. Volleyball is also a sport that is highly accepted, but mostly in Brazil and Argentina. However, the basketball being played in soccer dominating countries is often influenced by soccer, but depends on the development of the country. “I know in Argentina [basketball] is very popular. Of course, not even close to...

...2015 Basketball: The teaching of the game. Basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports. Basketball is a sport played by two teams’ and their task is to shoot the ball through a circular rim, with a net hanging from it. Each team has five players and they play on a rectangular court having two baskets on both ends. The regulation basketball hoop consists of a rim or basket attached to a backboard. A team scores by shooting the ball through the net. A player scores 2 points if they shoot the ball and make the shot within the three point line and 3 points if they shoot the ball outside the three- point line. In order to play the game, players have to know the rules, the fouls of the game, and the regulation of the game. First, there are rules that all teams must follow to make the go smooth. The ball advances on the court either by dribbling while running or walking, or by passing from one player to another. Dribbling means to bounce to bounce the ball with your hands. However, it is against the rules not to dribble the ball while moving, to double dribble, or to carry it. Double dribbling means to hold the ball with both hands and then dribble the ball with both hands. A player should not step with both of their feet or this will be called traveling. If the player’s hand is under the ball and then they start to dribble the ball, then this will be carrying. A player cannot hit the ball with their fist or kick the ball with their foot. If a team passes half court then...

...There essentially are three big shoe brand companies that make basketball shoes Adidas, Reebok, and Nike. Someone who enjoys sports or basketball they are probable going to wear these shoe brands. Whether they specifically are attracted to the shoes or because of the comfort, durability, and effectiveness in daily activities. It also might be for the athlete that is featured in the commercial to the distinctive shoe designs that are shown. Starting with the Adidas commercial Derrick Rose a basketball player comes out from two giant gates into an arena and proceeds in a way to mimic a bull by dribbling a basketball through a gauntlet of bullfighters with red sheets avoiding them to making the basket at the end. With that said the commercial, for the most part, is saying when wearing these shoes the operator is the center of attention because he is the bull on the court just like Derrick Rose is in the arena. One who is more determined but also who has more agility to overcome difficulties to make the basket. This commercial is not only geared towards basketball players but lovers of the sport also those who like Derrick Rose and Adidas shoes....

...sports and society. It is an important sub-field of sociology that examines the many interpersonal and group phenomena that arises in relationship to sports. It covers all area in which sports affect and is affected by. The sociology of sports examines how culture and values influence sports as well as how sports influence culture and values. One could say that it has no boundaries. Sociology of sports also examines the relationships between sports and the media, politics, economic, religion, race and gender, as well as social inequality and social mobility ( Crossman, 2013). The sport I chose to research is basketball. Basketball is a game that continually amazes. Its fast pace and high flying aerial display has made basketball one of the most popular games in America. Basketball is a court game played by two teams of 5 players each. The object of this court game is to put a ball through a hoop or basket, and score more points than the other team. Invented in December of 1891 by James Naismith a Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician by the request of his superior Dr. Luther H. Guliet when he was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School ( now Springfield College) in Springfield Massachusetts. The first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had 9 players and the goals were wooden peach baskets...

...The Hardwood to the Diamond When the topic of baseball and basketball is mentioned, many only think about the differences between the two. What people do not realize is the parallelism between them. Comparing these two sports can vary from uniforms to the playing surface. Although athletes who take part in basketball and baseball complete different tasks, their ultimate goal remains the same: victory. The playing surfaces for both sports require constant maintenance. A baseball field requires much more (care or caring) than the basketball court, such as watering, mowing, and raking weekly, if not daily, depending on the use of the field. A basketball playing surface only needs waxed or resurfaced once a year and washed biweekly. Although baseball diamonds require far more work, the hardwood of a basketball tends to be more complex with the different lines from various sports running throughout the court. Much larger than a basketball court, the baseball field is typically located outside. Despite the differences, the games and practices take place on their own playing surfaces. They also contain a scoreboard located in a clearly visible...

...Football vs Basketball Football and basketball are alike and different in so many ways. Most people would think football and basketball and no similarities at all, but if you were to really check there are a few things they both have in common. There are also plenty of obvious differences between the two sports. Football is a contact sport and basketball has no contact involved. In basketball there are 12 minute quarters and football has 15 minute quarters. Football and basketball both need a ball in order to score for your team. First off, football is a sport where lots of contact is involved. In football, you need to tackle the opposing team to stop them from scoring. In basketball, there is some contact but, if you do hit someone you will...

...Confusing Basketball Rules When taking a charge, does the defensive player have to be still? Basketball rules state that if a defensive player is in a legal defensive stance or position, the defensive player has the right to move in order to maintain his legal positioning. A charging call can be made even if the defensive player has one or both feet off of the ground when the offensive player makes contact with the defensive player. The basketball rule of “verticality” applies here. If a defensive player jumps straight up to block a shot and the offensive player jumps into and creates contact with the defender, an offensive charging call could be made. (Therefore, it is more important if a defender is squared up and contact is made to the defender’s chest than if the defender is moving.) Is a dribble illegal if it goes over the ball handler’s head? Basketball rules states if the ball handler doesn’t “palm” the ball or place their hand under the ball, there is no dribbling violation. There is no basketball rule or restriction on how high a dribble can go. Is reaching into an offensive player's area a foul? If a defensive player “reaches in” to attempt a steal or distract the offensive player they are guarding and doesn’t create any contact, no foul should be called. Reaching in isn’t necessarily a foul until contact is created. Basketball rules state that the foul isn’t called reaching in, but holding or pushing. Is over the back a foul when rebounding a basketball? Officials...

...will little, to no, experience regarding the game of wheelchair basketball. The participants will be college students between the ages of 18-21, with 3 individuals encompassing each category (3 players with a level one classification, 3 players with a level two classification, and so on up to level four). As it relates to the actual practice, this will be taking place during the pre-season, as the athletes must become acquainted with the general knowledge and specifics of the game before more in-depth exercises can be configured. The practice will involve almost all aspects crucial to understanding the game, in which the athletes will become familiar with the rules and comfortable playing the game for the first time. I have arranged for them to work on controlling/handling their wheelchair, dribbling and passing a basketball while moving down the court, while finishing with a defensive activity to further help them understand the game and prevent turnovers/injuries while playing. I have chosen the specific drills in hopes of aiding the athletes in becoming comfortable within their wheelchairs, maneuvering around the court while being confident in their abilities. With key lessons such as hand position on the wheels of the chairs and keeping the athletes head up while racing down the court, these participants will have success when put into a real game situation. For our practice, we will be using the basketball courts within the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) here on campus...
