Follow your passions: The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant “There was a summer in my life when the only creature lovelier than a Bass was Sheila Mant”(Mcdougal 27). The story is being viewed from the Narrator. It takes place in the summer by a lake where the Narrator witnesses Sheila Mant for the first time. He becomes obsessed and watches her every day. “It was late August and I got the nerve to ask her out, there’s a band playing in Dixford tomorrow, you wanna go” (Mcdougal 28). However since the Narrator was a big fisherman he planned to take her by canoe. She accepted his offer but wasn’t enthusiastic about it. Finally we see whether or not the Narrator will choose his passion over Sheila Mant. While rowing down the river, the Narrator became increasingly annoyed with Sheila Mant. She didn’t like fishing and complained about almost everything. While the Narrator was trying to ignore Sheila Mant, he saw the biggest bass he’d ever seen! He thought to himself,“Four things occurred to me, 1. It was a bass 2. It was a Big bass 3. It was the Biggest bass he’s seen 4. Sheila Mant must not know” (Mcdougal 30). They were getting closer to the shore and he had to decide if he should catch the biggest bass he’s ever seen. He made the regretful choice to let the bass go. At the concert all the Narrator could do was dread about letting the bass go. Sheila Mant danced with him a few times but he didn’t really enjoy it. When the concert ended Sheila Mant ended up leaving with another guy. The Narrator learned the that you should always go after your true passions so you don’t have any regrets later in
