What is Honor?

“Honor is simply the morality of superior men”- H L Mencken. This quote is a remarkably good explanation of what I hold to be the definition of honor. The Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines honor as: “True nobleness of mind; magnanimity; dignified respect for character, springing from probity, principle or moral rectitude; a distinguishing trait in the character of good men.” While this definition is from an old version of the dictionary it is still useful and applicable. Honor is being morally aware, but it is also having integrity, respect for human life, to hate evil and to love good. To have honor is to respect the feelings and ambitions of others, to put their comfort above your own, To have a consistency of word and deed, to do your utmost to act justly.
