...Batman’s Civil Disobedience in Gotham city Hugo A. Sanchez English 102 10/24/14 Abstract In this paper, I argue that the film and comic Batman the Dark Knight Returns, can be compared to Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience in the way that Batman disobeys the law by returning back to Gotham city and fighting crime. I also show that Batman displays civil disobedience when he does his best to protect Gotham city and fight the government, promising to never give up. I show that, much like Thoreau, Batman is solitary and engages in his own war by himself against the police department, criminals, and army. Just as Thoreau willingly goes to jail for his beliefs about the Mexican War, Batman fights for what he believes to be right, not only for him, but for the people of Gotham city. Batman’s Civil Disobedience in Gotham City When corruption arises, there is always a person who questions the injustice. Acts of civil disobedience are shown in modern society today, whether in society or through the media. Many individuals who are portrayed as heroes are people who break the law and fight for the power and authority that the citizens have lost due to their rights being taken away. A person must be able to accept the outcomes and consequences of their own actions when they disobey. Being civilly disobedient is not only about breaking a law. The actions of these individuals spread ideas. In the end, the outcome of the struggle may involve a change in a law like the way Cesar...

...Batman Arkham Knight – Red Hood DLC Joins the Party Let's face it, despite a lot of effort on their part, GameStop haven't been able to deliver a punch with their Batman Arkham Knight. The game, which was much anticipated right around the hype of the next Batman and Superman movie, could have been a show stopper, but it wasn't. Now, GameStop is doing all it takes to revive flagging interest in the franchise, by introducing interesting downloadable content. Starting with Red Hood, another notorious vigilante, the upcoming lineup of DLC for the game should definitely create some ripples. The Importance of DLC GameStop, after a lot of speculation, has finally confirmed the availability of Batman Arkham Knight's Red Hood DLC. The announcement was made on 22 July, along with a highly pixelated graphic on their Twitter feed. From the graphic, one can make out the red capped vigilante hero springing into action. This new development is not only interesting because of the addition of a new superhero to the game, but also because of the intrigue it adds to the story. With Red Hood joining in the action, GameStop may be dropping in a hint at the real identity of the Arkham Knight, who has so far remained shrouded in mystery. Red Hood Though a vigilante, Red Hood is the antithesis of all that Batman signifies. He is murderous hero, who is ruthless in his quest for justice. Unlike Batman, who goes after the bad guys and leaves the innocent alone, Red Hood does not care about...

...emotional impact with me was the 2008 film, Batman – The Dark Knight. The movie shows the dangerous impact of criminals in Gotham city and how to deal with it. Batman, Bruce Wayne was played by (Christian Bale). Bruce with out the batman suit is a rich and carless guy who has one goal in life “Girls”. However, the real Batman is very controversy to this, he acts as an uncovered honor hero who wants to protect Gotham city from criminals, especially the Joker (Heath Ledger). The joker has nothing important in his life. Everything is worthless he killed for only one purpose, fun. The joker started in the movie by interrupt a group of criminals who are scared by the new Gotham’s hero, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) the district attorney who is aiming to be the next governor, and if he reduces the amount of crimes in Gotham city he may have a better chance to be the next governor. However, after an incident made by the Joker Harvey’s face was burned, also his mind too was burned with criminal thoughts. The Batman and lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) decided to cover Harvey’s last attempts as a criminal and let him die with an honor. In addition, Harvey and Bruce both have some emotion to Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). The movie shows great fights between the two main characters Batman and The Joker. Batman wanted the most to arrest the Joker and brings him to the justice. However, the only concern for The Joker was to know who the real Batman is. “The only sensible way to live in this...

...role when it comes to producing the finest films. In this essay, I will be critiquing Nolan’s choice of actors, if he has consistently chosen the right actor for the part, Nolan’s attention to details in the plot, if the time and storylines are accurate throughout his films, and character development. I will then proceed to compare his films to the films of another movie producer, seeing if Nolan’s films can stand up to the competition. To do this, I will be focused on his Batman trilogy, for which he is most well known for. Nolan’s Batman trilogy consists of Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises...

...enjoyed. To say that Batman v Superman was at the center of much controversy is an understatement. However, with the release of Wonder Woman earlier this year, it seems that the films were heading in the right direction and the future for the universe looks bright. Now we have Justice League, the much anticipated union of some of the biggest names in comic book history, and it's time to see if the movie is a step forward or two steps back. Justice League follows the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as Steppenwolf comes down to Earth to bring together three mysterious boxes which, when combined, can destroy our world and create a planet ripe for the coming of Darkseid. Now Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince must bring together a team to stop the coming invasion. In a way, Justice League is the conclusion to the Man of Steel trilogy, which continued in Batman v Superman, and it handles it's baggage much better than before. This movie not only has to set up three new characters, it also has to follow up to the three established heroes and it juggles it all very well. Although they...

...To start out I had to do some research on this film because I never seen the whole thing and it also has been a long time since I saw the parts that I did. I needed to brush up on the film so that I could make sure I knew what I was speaking of. After I had reviewed the research I have done, it turns out that Andy was right about The Dark Knight being the most popular film in the summer of 2008. It turns out that the film was first released in Australia, on July 16, 2008; it was two days later July 18, 2008 that it was released in North America. It wasn’t till July 24, 2008 when it was released in the United Kingdom. With over $1 billion in revenue worldwide and it is the seventh highest- grossing film of all time. I found that he was also correct when he stated that the film was a continuation from Batman Begins. The Dark Knight was filmed in many different places but the main filming took place in Chicago. The other parts took place in several parts of the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. The Dark Knight is a film about a superhero, which was directed and co- written by Christopher Nolan. The film was also produced by Charles Roven and Emma Thomas. The Dark Knight was based on the DC Comics and is part of Nolan’s Batman film series. Christian Bale played the lead character (Batman/Bruce Wayne). Some other main characters that played in the movie are Heath Ledger (joker), Gary Oldman (James Gorden), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes) and Aaron Eckhart (Harvey...

...Rant: Batman V Superman Well, I may be a week late to the party, but that won't stop me from writing about this terrible movie. That's right, I said it. This movie is trash and there is no debate. Of course, you can enjoy this movie and like it, that's your opinion, but you can't say that this movie was 'good' in any way. Why have I decided to write about this movie? Well, I was on Instagram the other day and there were way too many comments on various posts actually DEFENDING this piece of shit. I got into a number of arguments with random people because they were just trashing on other people and the critics for disliking the movie. I cannot believe how hard headed some blind fanboys are. To the point where I knew I clearly won the argument because their next replies were always something like: "You're just a dumb fag who hates on movies go kill yourself". I'm not exaggerating. These people need to be stopped. They need to open their eyes and see that this movie was not good AT ALL. Some more examples of comments I found on Instagram were like "This movie is perfection" or "Everyone who hates this movie is stupid and wouldn't understand the dark theme because they only like light-hearted Marvel movies". What exactly was wrong with this movie? Everything. I mean the fight scenes were pretty cool, but that's about it. It was just an overall mess. The story jumped around everywhere and couldn't focus on anything. Let's start with the first thing wrong, the title. It shouldn't...

...Asjah Johnson Liz Medendorp ENGL 1410.027 6 May 2015 The Science of Villainy Many people have a psychological need to be a different person and the world of fiction provides an opportunity for them to do just that. With the everyday stresses and the hassle of a normal life some people need to escape from their mundane reality. They can do this by reading books, watching movies, or playing video games. Unfortunately, some people cannot find the line between reality and fiction and often blur the two, or disregard reality completely. There are many cases of people who choose to do bad because it is what they want to do and there are others who do this because of something that happened in their lives at a young age. There is really no way to know when the need starts or how it manifests itself in an individual. Doctors and scientists who are trying to figure out if criminality is psychological or biological, have had a long standing debate. Which path has the correct answer to this question or at least the most promising evidence and where does it all start? Although there are many good cases arguing for both there is no clear answer to this question. In the fictional realm of superheroes and supervillains, there are numerous reasons as to why the latter of the two chooses a life of crime. The psychological ramifications of nature versus nurture are an everpresent idea that shapes the hero versus villain dynamic as we know it. In the article “Does Cartoon Violence Beget...

...them. But the era of the superhero movies are maybe coming to an end. Why is that? And will we no longer be looking at buff men and women dressed in slim tights and colourful capes? A dominating and very unique genre of movies saw it’s first light of the day back in the 00’s. It all started with the Batman-movie who was published in 2002 and became a massive success. If we look at the cold facts we can see, that in the list of best selling movies are The Avengers from 2012 and The Dark Night from 2008 present. This is an independent genre, although it’s got a lot in common with the action-genre. In both genres, we have an outstanding hero who saves the day and is unbeatable. But in the action-genre we have heroes like Harry Callahan and John McClane, who comes home at the and of the day and still remains the same hero. Unlike Spiderman and Batman who comes home in the end of the day and becomes a whole other person when they take their masks of. Often, when they get home, the superheroes turn into the opposite of a superhero- someone that you would never expect to save the world. And someone you could identify yourself with. And that is one of the most important parts in a superhero movie, because the hero stays anonymous and that creates an exiting story and a different view on the heroes. These superheroes are also different, because they take care of business by them selves. They do not get help from the police and doesn’t care a great deal about the law. Actually...

...unlike the two characters of Detective Comics who are always billed as Batman & Robin. “Robin & Batman” makes no sense, since Batman (Bruce Wayne) is the protagonist of the story and Robin (Dick Grayson) is his ward. The ordering of names is indicative of both their working style as superheroes as well as their living arrangement, which caused a great deal of controversy both in the context of the novel and some of the historical events it references. For Sammy Clay, the sidekick role apparent in the ordering of his and Josef’s names provides him a creative and continual outlet for his sexual desires, until the final crisis of the novel in which his learning of this very trend allows him to break free of his role and live his life in fulfillment and contentment. The connection between Kavalier & Clay and Batman becomes apparent not only through linguistic observation, but also through several references Chabon makes in the novel comparing one or both characters. Arguably, the interrogation Sammy faces at the trial about Wayne and Grayson’s relationship is the most explicit in that they both live together and they work as a team to achieve a common goal. Senator Hendrickson’s description of the sidekicks or wards as “muscular, strapping” (Chabon, 616) is a perfect example of Sammy’s unconscious fantasies materializing on the pages of a comic book. In addition, Detective Lieber alludes to the Batman & Robin comics when he calls Joe’s apartment in the Empire State Building...

...Forrest Gump: Management Accounting at the Movies Hollywood accounting can be every bit as creative as a good movie script. At least, that is what some lawyers and journalists seem to be telling us. According to news reports, the hit movie Forrest Gump, which won “Best Picture of 1994” honors at the Academy Awards, claimed a worldwide theatrical gross of $661 million through May of 1995. That amount excludes videocassette and soundtrack revenues, and it doesn’t include licensing fees of Forrest Gump products such as wristwatches, ping-pong paddles and shrimp cookbooks. Yet, according to Paramount Studios, the film project lost $56 million dollars on a box office gross of $382 million through December, 1994 (see Exhibit 1). Forrest Gump is the latest of a string of hit movies to report a loss. Other losers include Batman, Rain Man, Dick Tracy, Ghostbusters, Alien, On Golden Pond, Fatal Attraction, and Coming to America. Each of these motion pictures grossed well over $100 million, but in each case, costs were reportedly greater than revenues. The production costs for a film, part of what the studios refer to as “negative costs”, represents only part of the cost of the project. In addition, studios add promotion and distribution costs, advertising overhead, and distribution fees to the total negative costs to get the total cost of the project. A significant portion of the negative costs is the payments made to “gross participants” on the basis of a percentage of...
