Blessing by Imtiaz Dharker

The poem Blessing by Imtiaz Dharker is about appreciating the smalls of life and not taking anything that god has given you for granted. To portray this message Dharker uses many poetic devices such as personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, imagery, symbolism, rhyme and many more. There are many places where Imtiaz Dharker uses onomatopoeia to describe the scene of the poem but for one instance she uses it in lines 3-4 she says, "There never is enough water. Imagine the drip of it". The poem is set in third world countries where the everyday resources we have aren't found over there. Using the word drip helps emphasize how little water there is over there. There is so little water over there that you can hear just the one drop that drips out of the village pump every now and then reminding them of how little they have of there most important life line. In addition there is alliteration used in the poem. "Butts in, with pots , brass, copper, aluminum", the repeating "s" sound we hear comes out as the hissing sound that is heard during a hot summer day. It helps readers think about the scorching hot weather they go through year round that leaves their thirst permanently unquenched. To aid in making a clear statement the poet uses a simile. Dharker uses skin to symbolize how the land looks like. In line two she says, "the skin cracks like a pod". The land is so dry that it is cracking and that only happens in extreme cases such as droughts. This line helps imply that on top of poverty they are stricken with droughts which limits vegetation and plants overall. This shows how the ground that we walk on and, don’t pay attention to, actually makes such a huge impact on our lives. Fourthly the poem contains a rhyme scheme of AB at some parts. Using rhyme helps reel in readers and force them to listen because it's very catchy.

She Walks in Beauty

...Greatness “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words” (Frost 1-3). This poem by famous poet, Robert Frost, says through the emotion people feel, we can use words to explain them. This is how poetry has been created over the years. This saying, many poems are due to the emotions one creates throughout their words. Every person in the world has a different frame of mind and will all think differently in some ways. With this in mind, what would then truly be the “best poem in the world”? As a whole community, with each individual thinking differently, cannot be answered. Although, many may agree that the poem, “She Walks in Beauty” by Lord Bryon, is considered to be one of the “best poems in the world”. The poem effectively uses literary devices to create a sense of the beautiful woman he talks about. Lord Bryon uses strong imagery and symbolism to depict the women; lovely form and meter creating a melodic feel through the words of the poem and similes and personification explain further comparisons to the beauty of the girl. Lord Bryon creates beautiful creations in reader’s minds with the use of imagery and symbolism. Throughout the poem, there is a recurrence of the contrasting ideas of night and day, and dark and light. Bryon changes reader’s perceptions when the beauty of the woman is compared to the “night”. In most poems, a woman’s beauty is compared to “summer’s days”, such as in Shakespeare’s sonnet 18. In “She Walks in Beauty”...

In Flanders Field Figurative Language Essay

...What poem do I think is the best poem in the world? The answer to that would be the poem In Flanders Field by Dr. John McCrae. I have known this poem for most of my life growing up. We would always learn about it in school around Remembrance Day. As Canadians, this poem is very important because it was written in the First World War by a Canadian lieutenant who was inspired to write it after the death of his friend. Kelbvin

...Theme Love Like many of Shakespeare's sonnets, this poem is an expression of love. In order to express your love, you have to talk about it, define it, examine it. In telling his mistress that he loves her, our speaker also has to give us an idea about what his love is like. This poem is partly about where love comes from, what motivates our feelings of affection for someone else. Specifically, it's about finding love in spite of (or maybe even because of) physical flaws. Appearances "Appearances" is a major theme in Sonnet 130, since our speaker spends a lot of the poem talking about what's wrong with his mistress's looks. He does a pretty complete dissection of her face, her body, and her smell. He doesn't say anything at all about her personality, but instead sticks to his laundry list of problems with her appearance. This gives Shakespeare a chance to poke fun at our obsession with looks and to show how ridiculous it is to ask any person to live up to some ideal of perfect beauty. Women and Femininity In Sonnet 130, the theme "Women and Femininity" is connected to the idea of appearances. This poem is all about female beauty and our expectations and stereotypes about the way women ought to look. You know how in magazines women pretty much tend to look the same? They all fit into a very narrow definition of what is beautiful. Essentially, the speaker in this poem is pointing out that love poetry does the same thing. It makes women into goddesses, not real human beings...

Death and Impermanence

...learned. Death is different and we cannot experience or learn from the dead. So what are the deaths and impermanence is in these two poems, “Dog's Death” by John Updike and “In Memoriam” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson that give you compare and contrast to these poems. They related more by someone in the family died. The circumstance might be some terrible death that would make one flee. These two poems are comparison by families and friends missing them after death. They result of this fear is that sorrowing love ones have to many unnecessary complications at a difficult time in their lives. They are frequently disoriented and in shock. “In Memoriam”, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson can compare to “Dog's Death”, by John Updike in many ways. How Does Anne Hathaway Portray Duffy's View of Shakespeare

...Shakespeare’s will, right the way through the poem, Duffy finds many ways to present her thoughts and feeling for Shakespeare through the voice of his wife ‘Anne Hathaway’. In her poem, Carol Ann Duffy speaks in the voice of Anne Hathaway herself. It makes sense that Duffy wants to give a voice to this otherwise silenced woman because Duffy herself is known as a feminist. However this idea contrasts with that of the tone from the rest of the poem as before the poem even begins, she is showing a positive attitude towards Shakespeare, quoting his will, “Item I gyve unto my wife my second best bed”. At first glances, this seems like a strange and disappointing possession to receive from your husband, however, this bed is a reoccurring theme in the poem, and through Duffy speaking as Anne Hathaway we get the sense that to Anne, this solitary possession is important to her as it brings back many happy memories of romantic nights together “while guests dozed on, dribbling their prose”. The second best bed, the best traditionally being given to guests, was where they spent many romantic nights “we loved in a spinning world of forests, castles, torchlight, clifftops, seas where we would dive for pearls”. This is the first suggestion that this poem is different to that of her others, as she is yet to make a negative remark towards Shakespeare, suggesting that she respects him, whilst has a negative opinion on the other male poets and characters of other poems such as The Kray Sisters and Mrs Midas...

Cause and Effect

...The poem “Cause And Effect” written by Charles Bukowski is a very interesting poem about people that commit suicide and those they leave behind. I personally think this is a gloomy poem because death is usually a depressing topic. The poem starts out with, “the best often die by their own hand” I like how it starts out this way making those who take their life look like the best. I think it is interesting how it starts out kind of talking about those people and then changes to talking about the people they leave behind. Something that I noticed while reading this poem was that it is all in lowercase letters with no punctuation other than one comma. Then the poet says they do this ”just to get away” which is interesting because it makes you think why someone would just want to get away so much that they take their own life. “And those left behind can never quite understand why anybody would ever want to get away from them” I think that this last part of them poem really makes you think. I think people often do think this when someone they love takes their own hand however, the poet says they”just want to get away” which doesn’t necessarily mean away from anyone. I think this poet is kind of trying to show how people are very egocentric, even when someone takes their own life people relate it back to themselves. Also, people often times think that when someone takes their own life it is very selfish of them, but like the poem says those left behind don’t understand why someone would...

Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

...After extensive research I have come across a poem that I believe to be “the best poem in the world.” Still I Rise written by Maya Angelou is an inspirational poem symbolizing defiance and her strength to overcome negative criticism and oppression. There are many references to slavery and feminist rights throughout the piece that have a very powerful effect. She uses various amounts of poetic devices to further encapsulate the theme in this poem. These include the use of imagery, symbolism, metaphors and similes along with numerous sound devices. Maya Angelou utilized figurative imagery to exemplify the sad reality, which was the oppression of African Americans during slavery along with the mistreatment of women. “You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise.” (3-4) In relation to the past events of slavery and the manner in which women were treated, these lines portray an image of poorly treated races and sexes being walked all over. The word choice “Trod” and “Dirt” have connotative meanings because the majority of people would associate these words with animals. The poet is not meaning this literally, where as she is really figuratively comparing the culprits of this mistreatment to animals. There are many other examples of figurative imagery in this poem such as comparing “Oil Wells” (7), “Gold” (19) and “Diamonds” to these women and slaves. This use of imagery is used because all of these minerals are now valued higher then they were in the past. Along...

My favorite poem was Does Any Indian Go To Enough Pow Wows, particularly the end when he said,” I’ll wish that I’d be better and redder, And shook, shook my tail feathers.” Although I can honestly say this is my first time reading poems and trying to understand the meaning of them, I felt that poem had a bit of sarcasm in it. Although I enjoyed reading his poems, I’m not sure I can wrap my head around the meaning of some of them. The three poems that I liked best seem to have a common theme, life on the reservation. Beauty in Death

...tried to take the dog to the vet the next morning and in the car ride, she tried to bit her owner and had tied. The dog was only learning to live and yet she was already dying. The last act this dog had made was try and hide the diarrhea she didn't have any control over, she covered it with her newspaper. What I found very intriguing about this poem, is that the dog was treated as if it were one of the family members. It is evident that the family who owned the dog, had no idea what had happened, but you can almost feel their pain (Sherwood, 2001). And that is exactly how the author wants you to feel. I can tell that the author wanted me to feel empathy for the family's loss. I felt myself really connecting to this story because, we owned a husky and we had to put him down because he was getting so old, he couldn't control his bladder anymore. The themes that they used in this poem was Love and Grief. Love, for the dog, because it was so young and had so much ahead of it's precious life, and it's life was cut, just like that. Grief is something the was portrayed very well in this poem. You can't help but feel grief for the family in this poem....

Stay Gold In The Outsiders

The book is about a greaser named Ponyboy from Tulsa Oklahoma, Ponyboy goes through trials with some of his best buddies. I think that one of the best themes showed in the book is staying gold even when things around you are changing. I think this because they talk about Robert Frosts poem "Nothing Gold can Stay" (77) Secondly the book talked about people through out the book doing golden things to help the greasers out, and lastly before Johnny passes he tells Ponyboy to stay gold. First of all I think that one of the best themes from this book is staying gold while everything else is changing, one of the reasons why I think this is because in the book it mentions...
