Political Correctness

...Northeastern University POLITICAL CORRECTNESS And How It Affects People’s Attitude By Maria Sheehan English 1004 July 2013 Political correctness affects the language people use in a society. However, sometimes it fails to change the attitudes behind the language. The term “Political correctness” is very common and widely used among people. The term has undergone many changes throughout its existence. Initially this term signified the language people used to minimize possible offence on the basis of gender, race, or ethnicity. The definition of PC by “The Collins Cobuild English dictionary for advanced learners” reflects true and original meaning of the term. “If you say that someone is politically correct, you mean that they are extremely careful not to offend or upset any group of people in society, for example with their attitudes towards sex, race, or disability.” It also implies the intention and efforts to change discriminatory attitudes. However, It could be argued that politically correct language do not translate to politically correct attitudes. Van Boven, Dutch jurist and professor emeritus, argues that when people perceive the language they speak as having high standards of political correctness, they become more politically correct themselves (Van Boven, 2000). This statement can be supported by the PC ideologies, which were intended to enforce and change people’s views on gender, race and other minorities. One of...

Analysis of the Sentry by Wilfred Owen

...opposition. This line is also an enjambment as the first line and its thought continues to the next line. The second and third line describe the “shells” or bombs “And gave us hell, for shell on frantic shell Hammered on top, but never quite burst through” – here owen describes how the shells never penetrated into the place they were, but the shells were close. He also uses a figure of speech, namely personification, to describe the shells as frantic. The words “hell” and shell” in the second line have an internal rhyming. And the repition of the word shell tells the readers that the bombing was one after the other. The next to lines tells the readers how the bad weather adds on to the soldiers misery, how even nature was not on their side now. “waterfall made of slime” is an oxymoron because as a reader we would most...

Identity in the Face of Discrimination

...Identity in the Face Of Discrimination The thought of identity is an ever-present theme in society. From the moment of birth till death, humans persistently search to piece together who they are in this world. Humans seek to foster their identities by selecting values, beliefs, and assumptions perceived to define who they are. In extreme cases collective identities can be destructive. Defining one’s self as belonging to a collective group, more often than not, leads other groups to be labeled different, or outsiders. Stereotypes and discrimination, driven by the concept of identity, can cause untold amounts of pain for their victims. However, throughout all stages of life, a defined sense of identity also can be a reassuring coping mechanism. This personal resource we call identity has a tremendous effect on an individual’s psychological state. In uncomfortable or new situations, a healthy and defined sense of self can help individuals navigate society. When the characteristics that define person are those targeted by discrimination identities are questioned. One can either embrace who they are with pride and rise above the ignorance, or they can be invisible. The works “Battle Royal” and “This Morning”, present both sides of the balance between embracing and abandoning one’s identity, together they demonstrate the importance of a clear sense of self in the face of discrimination. In uncomfortable surroundings, such as a new situation, sometimes people find it easier to...

Invisible Man Essay

...Invisible Man Essay The narrator says he is invisible from society because society refuses to see him. He receives a scholarship to college, but is expelled for what happened at the Golden Day. He goes to NY and tries to find a Job, works short while at Liberty Paints. Becomes a speaker for the Brotherhood, but has opposing views that result in conflict. Harlem goes into a riot and the narrator disappears by living underground in order to be true to himself without the pressure of society. A symbol is something that can stand for one thing, but mean another. In the Invisible Man we see plenty of symbols. Everything is a symbol, but some are more important than others. Some symbols carry all throughout the book. A contextual symbol can be a setting, character, action, object, name, or anything else in a work that maintains its literal significance while suggesting other meanings and a cultural symbol is different symbols that may have quite different meanings in different cultures. The statue is a very important symbol in the novel. "I see the bronze statue of the college Founder, the cold Father symbol, his hands outstretched in the breathtaking gesture of lifting a veil that flutters in hard, metallic folds above the face of a kneeling slave; and I am standing puzzled, unable to decide whether the veil is really being lifted, or lowered more firmly in place; whether I am witnessing a revelation or a more efficient blinding...Why is a bird-soiled statue more...

Interracial Adoption Research Paper

...Civil Rights Movement or the Harlem Renaissance of white descent would feel like blacks and white should stay within their races, regardless of if it is de facto or de jure. De facto means incidental or without recognition of doing like walking into a classroom and seeing all the African Americans and biracial children on one side and the Caucasian children on the other; de jure means by law, so having the colored drinking fountains, bathrooms, restaurants, etc. The people who oppose see a problem with interracial adoption because they believe it will a) damage the mind of the child, b) confuse the child on what ethnicity he/she is, c) create an issue in schools and job opportunities, or d) will make the child socially unacceptable. Some argue that having a white family adopt a black child will corrupt and damage the mind because of the household and social change. The child would be taught the ways of said “white privilege”and would believe that they have that same privilege, but would not obtain any because the child is black. Children in mixed homes can sometimes suffer from anxiety or confusion for a while from not knowing which culture and racial identity they should cling to. Job opportunities or school papers will come harder for these children because they will also have a hard time filing out personal information when it comes to their ethnicity or family...

Nature vs Nurture

...Intelligence There have always been disputes on whether the decision to be homosexual or heterosexual was based on biological or environmental factors. These disputes are known as the Nature vs. Nurture argument. The two sides argue over how gender is chosen within a person. Based on reproductive organs, sex is easily determined at birth: male or female. Gender, however; is the sexual identity an individual takes on. It is possible for sex and gender to be different. For an example of nurture children who were both born with an injured or damaged reproductive organ, males usually can be raised successfully as females. In order to understand which factor is the deciding factor of a person’s gender, both sides of the case must be fully evaluated. DNA studies which appear to prove that gender is a genetic trait. Researchers have analyzed the makeup of the human brain of homosexuals and heterosexuals seeking a connection between gender and the brains physiology. They found when studying the part of the brain directly related to a persons’ sexual drive, that homosexuals had an enlarged hypothalamus, whereas heterosexuals had a normal one indicating a direct correlation between the brain and gender selections (AllPsych). In researching DNA’s role in gender identity, some scientist have identified the gene that determines a person’s sexual preference. Although there are mounting evidence of the existence of a “gay gene, “the opposition denies the existence (AllPsych). |People...

Oedipus The King Literary Analysis

...difficult to justly accuse Oedipus of being “blind” or foolish when he seems to have no choice about fulfilling the prophecy: he is sent far from Thebes as an infant and by an astounding fortuitous event spared and brought as a sovereign up in Corinth. Hearing that he is destined to slaughter his dad, he escapes Corinth and, by a still more exceptional fortuitous event, winds up back in Thebes, now lord and spouse in his genuine father's place. Oedipus appears to be just to want to escape his destiny, yet his destiny consistently keeps him on the right track. Personally, I have a strong opinion about the gods in Oedipus the King. I think they are almost as metaphorically blind as the tragic characters in the plays. The gods are blind in the sense that they totally ignore Oedipus’ effort in changing his prophecy, instead the inescapability of prophecy were strongly suggested by Sophocles. While Oedipus seeks out for the cause of the plague and tries to restore balance in a cosmic sense, in contrast the prophecy (the force that represents gods) is like an ultimate form of chaos for any individuals and is unavoidable. Many people have tried to argue that Oedipus brings about his catastrophe because of a “tragic flaw,” but nobody has managed to create a consensus about what Oedipus’s flaw actually is. Being the king of Thebes, the one authoritative figure that everyone else looks upon, Oedipus’ shoulders are burdened by his identity. He certainly has fears and doubts of...

Oedipus Rex

...unwillingness or inability to understand that which is clear to the audience. His hubris (extreme pride) is his tragic flaw, truly blinding him from the truth. Oedipus eventually blinds himself, and it is then that he can finally “see”. From the very beginning, Oedipus was blinded by pride. Throughout the play, it is the one greatest irony that those with physical sight are blind, yet those who cannot actually see can see the truth. With the city of Thebes dying, Creon, having been sent to do so by Oedipus, comes from Delphi and the Oracle to deliver the message that the "the pollution of this land" (Sophocles 232), the murderer, be killed to bring an end to their strife.. Oedipus shows hubris when he demands Creon talk with him publicly, so convinced is he that he can solve any problem. Oedipus Has already solved the riddle of the Sphinx, that which had thwarted so many before him; "Oedipus knew the famous riddles. He was a mighty king, he was the envy of everyone who say how lucky he'd been. Now he's struck a wave of terrible ruin" (276) The chorus wishes for Oedipus to appeal to the gods to find the killer, Oedipus asserts that "to force the gods to act against their will- no man has the power."(320) Here, at least, he seems to humble himself before at least Apollo. Oedipus calls for Tiresius, the blind prophet. Here, the greatest irony of the play comes in, as Tiresias “sees” what Oedipus does not. Tiresias, who truly sees and predicts the downfall od Oedipus, he becomes the...

On Amphitryon

...and engaging in sex with her. It is a story entrenched in the idea of immorality. I feel the play is very value-adding, because nowadays people in our society may not be conscious of their own immoral practices. Or if ever they are aware, they don’t realize the extent of its impact. Are people really resigned to such things? Or can they do anything about it? Do we have any shame left in us? Amphitryon also plays on the idea of love. We must ask ourselves, what do we know about it? Is it only an emotion that we act on when we feel connected with someone? Does it have any weight on one’s moral conscience, or is it just blind? I can definitely say that the play changed my views on it. The play has taught me that it is very contextual; we cannot keep giving in to our whims, or the consequences will get the better of us. Lastly, Amphitryon deals with an identity crisis among its characters. We will often ask ourselves: who am I? When I watched the play, especially the confusing experience Mercury was going through, I did keep asking myself this question. (I do not deny that I am as disturbed with myself as the next person.) Though the play cannot answer this for everyone, it does set a platform for everyone to stand on. It gives people a personal way of discovering their other selves, and how to reconcile with them. On this note, I would like to applaud the play’s symbolic use of the “self” idea. This play also grabbed me because it was interesting to watch the flawed, human...

...Chapter 1 Summary The narrator speaks of his grandparents, freed slaves who, after the Civil War, believed that they were separate but equal—that they had achieved equality with whites despite segregation. The narrator’s grandfather lived a meek and quiet life after being freed. On his deathbed, however, he spoke bitterly to the narrator’s father, comparing the lives of black Americans to warfare and noting that he himself felt like a traitor. He counseled the narrator’s father to undermine the whites with “yeses” and “grins” and advised his family to “agree ’em to death and destruction.” Now the narrator too lives meekly; he too receives praise from the white members of his town. His grandfather’s words haunt him, for the old man deemed such meekness to be treachery. The narrator recalls delivering the class speech at his high school graduation. The speech urges humility and submission as key to the advancement of black Americans. It proves such a success that the town arranges to have him deliver it at a gathering of the community’s leading white citizens. The narrator arrives and receives instructions to take part in the “battle royal” that figures as part of the evening’s entertainment. The narrator and some of his classmates (who are black) don boxing gloves and enter the ring. A naked, blonde, white woman with an American flag painted on her stomach parades about; some of the white men demand that the black boys look at her and others threaten them if they don’t...
