...Michael Lewis’s The Blind Side analyzes two separate storylines. The most important is a biography of a once underprivileged boy’s journey to the National Football League (NFL), while the other is the importance of a left tackle’s position on a football field which is to protect the quarterback’s blind side. Michael Oher, an incredibly large black high school student, lived in one of the poorest zip codes in the entire country. His father was not present in his life, and his mother was addicted to drugs. His unofficial guardian at the time enrolled him into a predominantly wealthy white Christian school in hopes of bettering his life. With Oher’s less-than-subsequent previous academic performances, the school’s administration was reluctant...

...Eli Palomares Movie Review 10/11/2012 The movie I chose to write a review on is called "the blind side". The movie is based on a true story of a young African American homeless boy, Michael Oher, who is adopted by a generous white family. At first he struggles to live with the family because of past circumstances and conditions that made him who he was; an “ordinary stereotypical” black boy with no schooling, no real family, and no future. Throughout the film, Michael has experiences that put him in a difficult place. He has never experienced such loving kindness from anyone, and to see it now coming from a white family, he is hesitant to believe it is too good to be true. In our ethnic studies class, we discuss the different type of cultures and races that are in our community. In this case, the African American culture has many of the following stereotypes: Unintelligent and childlike, animalistic/bestial, lazy, criminals, uncivilized, and part of the poor class. All throughout the movie we will see several examples of this and how it affected Michael and the Tuohy's, the white family that took him in as one of their own. Our story takes place in Memphis Tennessee. The main character, Michael Oher, is a poor African American that was taken from his mother as a child. He lives in a foster home, but tries many times to escape, but every time he leaves he would be brought back or placed into a different one. Again, he would run away and not want to be found. He spent most...

...story, the 2009 film The Blind side directed by John Lee Hancock tugged at the heartstrings of viewers following the story of the Tuohy Family who take in an African-American homeless teenager Michael Oher. Located in the town of Memphis, Tennessee, Oher was born into a family with a mother who struggled from a drug addiction, a father who was in jail, twelve siblings, no stable living environment and little formal education. In contrast, the Tuohy’s lifestyle was considerably different, owning nearly one-hundred franchises of taco bell, and living on the upscale side of town. The film focuses on the adoption of Michael Oher by the Tuohy family after he was invited to stay the night when they realized he had no other place to go. Ohers' stay extended each day as the family began to treat him as one of their own. Oher expressed an interest in football and his new family pushed hard to help him succeed; they helped him understand different positions in a football team and hired a tutor to improve his grades. The director conveys through the use of plot, flashbacks, characters and emotional appeals to show that it does not matter where a person comes from, as long as they have people willing to set them on the right track, they can succeed. Michael Oher began in a broken home but went on to achieve big accomplishments such as being a first-round pick in an NFL draft. Hancock uses the plot to follow a teen who has little knowledge of the technical side of sports, and little education...

...The scene I have chosen is a critical chapter of the movie The Blind Side directed by John Lee Hancock. The scene displays in part, what it is like to be a second class black American brought up in a disadvantaged neighbourhood, afflicted by crime and poverty. This pivotal shows the drawbacks that a life of poverty can inflict on a young adult. The chapter shows the contrast between being underprivileged and well off, providing the viewers with the crux of the film. Director John Lee Hancock reveals that the main character has never had his own bed. Shedding a sympathetic light on Michael, hence evoking compassion for him throughout the film. The scene opens with a slow moving pan looking into Michael’s new bedroom through his door. The pan...

...In this piece from the movie The Blind Side mother Leigh Anne Toughy is the narrator of a clip from a Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. In this clip, linebacker Lawrence Taylor slams quarterback Joe Theismann to the ground during a “flea-flicker” play, ending Theismann's career and as a result the 2nd highest paid player on an NFL team is the left tackle, to protect the quarterback's “blind side”. No matter how your race, social class, or home life, you can transform yourself and become successful with a little help and kindness from others. In Leigh Anne’s speech she describes the flea-flicker play after the running back hands the ball back to the quarterback, she says “up to now, the play’s...

...Sociological Perspective of the Blind Side Social problems within our society continue to arise. In an ideal world, it is appropriate to say that as individuals we all wish to live life in peace. Unfortunately, getting a whole nation to come to a consensus is nearly impossible. Social problems are controversial societal or behavioral related issues, which can affect the environment, people and social institutions (Leon-Guerrero 2013). These social problems can range from global concerns to racial issues such as discrimination and through our sociological imagination we are able to differentiate problems using our own discretion (Leon-Guerrero 2013). Choosing a movie to analyze from a sociological perspective was an interesting experience because you become aware of the many social problems that were always there and never paid attention to. The movie "The Blind Side" is a great example, which highlights the three main social problems that will be analyzed and interwoven in this paper: social class and poverty, education, and alcohol and drug abuse. "The Blind Side" is based on a true story, outlining Michael Oher’s life from an impoverished child to a successful athlete with the help of the Tuohy Family. The Tuohy family took Michael in and ended up adopting him. Michael came from a broken home, growing up in the inner city of Memphis, Tennessee with a mother who was a drug addict and an absentee father. After running away from several foster homes, Michael was fortunate...

... Blindspot Blindspot is a new American drama series produced by Martin Gero that premiers on NBC every Monday night. Blindspot is a show about a woman, (played by Jamie Alexander), dropped in the middle of times square shoved naked in a duffle bag labelled “Call the FBI”. This is a good start to the show, it’s eye catching and different. Her memory had been entirely erased, she doesn’t know who she is, and she has tattoos covering her whole body. She’s like a walking puzzle and the audience has to try fitting all of the pieces together. Yes, yet another FBI crime show, but although Blindspot may be similar in style to all of the other crime shows it’s still very unique. Jane is dumped in the middle of Times square, naked in a duffle bag. Covered in tattoos, each with a meaning leading to something. All crime shows are going to be similar in some ways, but Blindspot is far unlike the others. “We don’t lay breadcrumbs. You’re going to get some great resolution by the end of the year, you’re going to get some great resolution. As we come through this mythology, there are a lot of twists and turns.” This is a quote from the producer, Gero. One reason to continue watching the series, it’s going to get interesting. It’s said that Blindspot and another Series Prison Break are very similar shows. Prison Break is apparently releasing a new series in 2016. Both of these shows have a meaning behind the characters covered in tattoos. But Gero says, “We welcome the tattoo competition”...

...In this paper I will be looking at the movie The Blind Side and analyzing the character of Sean Jr., known in the movie also as S.J. I will be looking at S.J.’s development in Sigmund Freud’s latency period and Erik Erikson’s stage of Industry vs. Inferiority. I will also write about the traditional and alternate paradigms that relate to this character in the movie and the risk and protective factors that affect him. At the end of the paper I will discuss why looking at a person in all of these different aspects is important in the work of a generalist social worker. The Theorists In our class discussion and PowerPoint, we learned that Sigmund Freud believes that a child goes through five different stages before they reach the maturity of...

...What Makes A Good Movie The Blind Side is a 2009 American drama–sports film written and directed by John Lee Hancock, and based on the 2006 book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis. The storyline features Michael Oher, an offensive lineman who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL.. The film follows Oher from his upbringing, through his years at Wingate Christian School (a representation of Briarcrest Christian School in the Suburbs of Memphis, Tennessee), his adoption by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuophy, and on to his position as one of the most highly popular prospects in college football. For her performance, Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. The film itself also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. For 17 years, Michael Oher) has been in foster care with different families. Every time he is sent to a new home, he runs away. One of his friend's fathers, whose couch Mike had been sleeping on, enrolls him into a Christian school, after the father convinces the coach that "Big Mike" is a natural athlete, yet he refuses to beat people to the ground. The coach convinces the school principal to enroll him in the school. After school one day, Michael(Quinton Aaron) meets Sean "SJ" Jr. (Jae Head), who quickly make friends with Michael. ...The relationships between characters in the film “The Blind Side” directed by John Lee Hancock, gave the movie a deep, touching and empathetic plot, especially the relationship between the two characters Leigh-Ann Touhy and Michael Oher. This essay will describe the deep bond that Micheal Oher formed with Mrs Touhy and how this impacted on the other characters in the movie. Despite being somewhat a lone pupil at school, he formed a bond that was as strong and caring as a son would relate to his mother. In sum, the one decision by characters in this film made a large difference to the future of Michael Oher and family in schooling and careers. Michael Oher and Leigh-Ann Touhy’s relationship was important in the development of the film because, when Michael first started high school at Wingate Christian school a family friend of his ‘Big Tony’ let’s him stay at his place. Big Tony wants Michael to go to the school because he’s an excellent football player. When Leigh-Ann first saw ‘Big Mike’ (as he was first known) she was picking up her son SJ from the school. A high angle showed that Michael was insignificant at the time and people from all walks of life were ignoring him. A few days later, Leigh-Ann and Sean Touhy go to SJ’s performance at the school for a play about Indians. She is driving home when she then see’s Michael and asks “Do you have somewhere to stay?” “I’m going to the gym,” replies Michael “Come, I’ll put...

...Film Essay: The Blind Side Michael Glyde Wiles Waldorf College: Critical Thinking Film Essay: The Blind Side The film “The Blind Side” Written by Michael Lewis, Starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, and Kathy Bates is a powerful true story. The movie is set in Tennessee; the Blind Side contains two separate but important stories. One details the real life trials and tribulations of a young black man named Michael Oher. The other details the evolution of the position Michael will ultimately play in the game of football. The left tackle position, in today’s NFL left tackles get paid the most money next to the Quarterback because they are responsible for guarding the quarterback’s blind side. The goal of the main charter is to help a young homeless boy. The major decision was taking the young man into the family home and giving him a place to stay this decision was made by the family Sandra bullock (Leigh Anne Touhy) and Tim McGraw (Sean Touhy) along with the children. The process was not an easy one, after taking in Big Mike the family had to deal with many obstacles, Michael’s grades were poor so they had to get him help by hiring MS sue to tutor him they also dealt with people questing the fact that Sandra bullock (Leigh Anne Touhy) had a daughter the same age as Michael and how she would deal with that. There were many problems and roadblocks, a few were the fact that people at the school did not think that Michael belonged at the school or if he could...

...The Blind side is a true story, which is also a sad story. It is about Michael Oher, who had a hard life growing up. He met up with a wealthy family who took him in and tried to give him a better life that he was given while growing up. Growing up in the projects in Memphis where this all took place was a hard thing for people to accept. The family made him like a son and protested one another which I don’t feel a lot of families do now a days. Certain people carry guns to protect themselves, and their family members and are part of the NRA. They showed how people in gangs would threaten other people and you need to know how to protect yourself in these types of situations. There were scenes where there were football games, and we were shown how he got to be on the football team. He had to get help with schoolwork so he could pass school. In one excellent scene, the breaking point of human nature is revealed. How far can one be pushed? We see how Michael reacts when taunted and teased mercilessly by a member of an opposing team. When Mike finally reaches his boiling point, he becomes a human bulldozer and physically bull dozes his tormentor off the field. I have experienced bullies in my past and can totally relate to Michael’s reaction. The result of Michael’s reaction helps him show the coaches what he is capable of doing on the field, and so it is a very positive outcome born from a negative start. This is a film about chance meetings. Michael needs to be out...

...My Movie Critique of The Blind Side Shannon Cowper English 225: Introduction to Film Michael Warren February 2, 2014 Some people may feel that if a movie wins an academy award that it is a great movie because the film critics have experience, the film critics are paid professionals, and also that the film critics decide which movies are nominated for an academy award so the movie must be good. But this is where many people beg to differ regarding the film critic’s reviews on a particular film. In some cases, if a film critic decides that a movie is good, not every movie goer will feel the same way. I have sat and listened to Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert as they either praised or destroyed a film. Whenever I chose to go and view a film they have given their customary thumbs up to I would normally not enjoy the film. It is possible that I did not see the same things within a film as they did as it was evident that I was not viewing the film in the same manner as a film critic by looking for camera angles, editing, or frames. All that I cared about was escaping for a couple of hours and receiving some enjoyment from the movie. Some people feel that this is a special time for film criticism. Never before have more people been able to express their views about a film. Being a film critic was once a profession, but it’s not a job any longer and there is not a huge financial gain by doing so. However, this opens the door for those who want to critique a film and also...
