...The Importance of Fantasy in The Cat In The Hat By Sabrina Lee Xin Ru (21257819) The Cat in The Hat was a children’s book written and creatively illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Suess. It was first published in 1957 and has since made a deep impression in the hearts of children and adults alike. The story centers around an eccentric anthropomorphic cat that comes in to the house of two children while the adults are away, attempting to entertain them while they are stuck at home on a rainy day. The element of fantasy that was implemented throughout the story, which includes a talking pet goldfish and a talking cat that performs all sorts of tricks, became an immediate success and was praised as an exciting alternative compared to the ineffective traditional primers such as those featuring Dick and Jane. This essay will discuss on the importance of fantasy in popular children’s literature such as The Cat in The Hat. Firstly, fantasy is vital for the human mind. Fantasy in children’s literature such as in The Cat in The Hat is important as it is a slow and mediated way for children to come to terms with the reality of life as they grow up. It begins as the psychological process by which a child learns to fill the gaps between knowledge, reality and experience, and becomes a vital coping mechanism. For example, when a young child is frightened by the unknown, like the spooky creaks of a floorboard in the middle of the night. For them, the only way...

...Jacquelyn Clark Professor Rodriguez English 1302 December 2, 2014 Literature Paper Teaching young children priceless lessons such as trying new foods can be challenging for many parents. As a God Mother of a very finicky three year old boy, it is implausible to get him to try new meals or snacks. Even after I sought guidance from his mother and mine for ideas, he still refused different refreshments, until I read to him and his kid sister Green Eggs and Ham and several others by Dr. Seuss. It happened by mistake when I realized that many of Dr. Seuss books teach children helpful lessons that most parents are feeble to because he uses fun graphics, rhyme, and entertains their imagination. When you actually analyze these books written by Dr. Seuss, it is not hard to see the main ideas of his stories through the pictures alone. Before I even open the book of Green Eggs and Ham, I see similarities of Amauri and the main character, The Black Hatter. They are wide eyed, with their nose up, and careful not to get too close to anything out of the normal, but yet curious enough to examine the beasty looking cuisine. On page twenty-three, there is a picture of Sam-I-Am enticing “The Black Hatter” into a box with a fox to try the green eggs and ham. This is an ironic metaphor of how parents try to get their children to eat their veggies. “I will let you watch TV with Daddy during dinner if you eat your green beans”. However, the bribe is not enough to get them interested. As I...

...Derek Ajamian The different topics in the movie weren’t all accurate. Back then gladiators were supposed to make it believable but no actually kill each other. Also the pointing of a thumb down or up was changed in the movie then it really was. Another difference was some of the men had good bodies and weren’t plump or chubby. I think this movie is very believable. Hollywood added the drama between the crazy emperor and Maximus. Maximus was sold into slavery and back then Gladiators did that too. In the movie they didn’t have gladiators fight privately in other peoples rich homes and in the past they would. They didn’t make it 100% based on historical fact because they want a dramatic storyline that really brings action to an amazing story. They changed the thumbs because since this movie was made in our generation that’s what were used but in the past they would have it the other way. The coliseum’s big and small was exactly the same in the movies and back then in Rome. There was a battle of Carthage that Rome had won in real life and in the movie Maximus and others won that battle. The weapons and training were pretty much the same except there was no net in the movie and in the past they had those. Woman gladiators were in the movie and in past Rome too. They showed gambling in the movie before the battles and in the past they did this too. Fans would get very into these events in the movie and in the past. Lastly the gladiator dress was the same in the early Roman time...

...becoming heroes are The Cat in the Hat and Monsters Inc. At first, these monsters come about as scary looking but that’s not how these selctions end up; finishing with a twist in the end with monsters showing a care for human children. While written 40 years apart, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat and Pete Docter’s film Monsters Inc. demonstrate responsible behavior in interactions with children and show the flawed characters who though their journey have monster heroes who interact with human children and then accept responsibility for the messes they have created. The Cat in the Hat and Monsters Inc. portray a child’s adventure as a result of showing up unexpectedly. The Cat enters out of the blue introducing himself to the two children and begins creating chaos around the house because he’s being a careless cat. The Cat unlocks a crate and frees the two identical creatures with blue hair who rally round the Cat...

...contemporary writers, is rarely recognized even though his work is well known throughout the world. He has won three Academy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for his work but people only recognize him by his pseudonym, Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat is a book is about a Cat that moves in on two unsuspecting Children on a rainy day. He creates a whirlwind of misbehavior that the kids are at first powerless to stop. After the cat invites his friends into the house, they trash the place and try to get the kids to join in with all the mischief. After the boy asserts himself and orders the fun-loving cat to hit the road; that is where the story ends. This book was Theodor’s third book, the first of the six that the Cat appears in. The Cat in the Hat was perhaps the defining book of his career. The book only has 236 “new-reader” words in its vocabulary. When Ted’s first wife died in 1967, he married his old friend which only influenced the production of his later books. Theodore wrote the book because he felt that there should be more entertaining and fun material for beginning readers. The entertaining tale with the tiny vocabulary shows that he had a great skill in writing. The Cat in the Hat is what I believe to be the start of the new genre. The book was a hit in 1957, and since then has sold more than 11 million copies and has been translated into more than 12 different languages. The books fun antics have become one of...

The two passionate parents worked hard to manage their three children. Seuss had two admirable sisters named Marine, who was two years older, and Henrietta, who was three and a half years younger. This was a traumatic point for the Seuss family, as they had lost someone they loved. Seuss’s mother Henrietta would often chant soothing nursery rhymes remembered from her childhood...

In this work, the grandmother puts her family into dangerous situations because of her personal identity, eventually leading them to their death. As the story progresses, she leads her family down a dirt road, off of their intended route. She startles her cat as they continue down the dirt road, which jumps up and frightens her son, Bailey, causing them to go off the road. This series of events leads to their conflict with the Misfit, and eventually their murder. She maintains her personal identity throughout the story regardless of the consequences of these actions. Even at the brink of death, she continues to uphold her belief that she is superior, going as far as to call herself a lady when the Misfit is going to kill her. The grandmother considers herself superior to Bailey and his family because she deems herself to be a lady. She does not want to go to Florida and attempts to convince her son to go east Tennessee instead, by showing him a news article about the Misfit. She says that she would much rather bring her grandchildren to the Old South where “they would see different parts of the world and be broad” (372). ...HISTORY OF SONGKHLA Songkhla is the provincial capital of Songkhla Province. The city itself is surrounded by beaches such as Samila & Son Awn and also known as "the great city on two seas". With the beaches, some historical centres and nice green parks, this place is definitely a good battery recharge point before heading to livelier Hat Yai. Songkhla or Singgora in Malay, was a city of an old Malay Kingdom of Langkasuka with heavy Srivijayan influence. It has been under Thai suzerainty since the 18th century.
