On September, 1960, James Meredith, an African American man as well as a former US Air Force serviceman, was escorted onto The University of Mississippi by U.S. Marshals, only to be faced with hundreds of furious and discriminatory protesters in uprisal over the colored man’s enrollment into their previously all-white university. Around 300 were injured and 2 were killed during the riot when things got violent.
James Meredith’s enrollment to The University of Mississippi pierced the education system’s shield of segregation and opened the way for black men and women to attend colleges all throughout America.
