The cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway is a story that deals with the traumas of war.

It shows the mental stress that one deals with when facing this terrible situation. When

faced with something like this people react different ways due to their personality. Most

people can not handle the harsh reality of what war is and break down under these

situations. But the main characters of this story are not most people. They still feel they

have something to live for and a task they must complete. Arrow is only a university

student when the war starts but she is recruited to become a sniper at first she denies.

The cellist continues to play his songs each day

for every person that died. While some think he is foolish sometimes he still has an

audience some days. Other days no one is there due to the fighting in the streets but

through it all he still continues to play as he promised. Ken goes through the attack at

the brewery when there are 100 people waiting in line he is sad and angry at the men

on the hills and the people who are able to profit of the war. Dragan is shot at for the

first time he has seen mortar attacks and watched as others have been shot down but

never had the target on his own back before which is a new experience that makes him

realize how much he fears death. Arrow spends her days guarding the cellist why she

doesn't know the reason behind why he plays or what he wishes to accomplish she

knows it important. She is able to keep him safe and kill every sniper from the other

side. The story puts the characters through so many terrible situations and it changes

who they are. It also changes how the see the world and Sarajevo itself they do not

believe it can ever go back to the way it was before the
