The meaning of Hannah in American, Biblical, as well as hebrew means “gracious”, but the hebrew language also portrays the meaning of Hannah as “favour”. The word gracious, as well as favour is suitable throughout the first three chapters because it is showing how Hanna is gracious/favourable in several ways. According to the dictionary, the definition of gracious is “courteous, kind, and pleasant” which are some of the many qualities that Hannah has, therefore making her name mostly suitable for her character. The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen states, “‘it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake, Ron-ron, but if you do, I’ll be right there next to you. I’ll whisper it into your ear just like they do in plays when someone forgets a line.’”(5) What Yolen might be trying to show is how Hannah is assuring Aaron (Ron-ron) that if he does mess up, it isn’t the end of the world and no matter what, she will be right there with him. …show more content…

Half way through her family gathering for Passover, Hannah is asked to open the door for the prophet Elijah. After she opens the door, she time travels back to the time of the holocaust and she thinks it was just a dream from drinking...

Holocaust

...Holocaust The Devil’s Arithmetic is a captivating story about a 13-year-old girl named Hannah who lives in present day America. Hannah is very neglectful of her Jewish heritage and its customs. During Seder feast she is asked to “open the door” for the prophet Elijah. She finds herself transported back in time to 1942. After being shanghaied and taken to the Nazi concentration camp, she has to use what she knows about the future to survive the horror, which is the Holocaust. I find that The Devil’s Arithmetic and the novel Night both illustrate the struggles and hard reality that occurred inside the camps. Holocaust means “burnt whole”. In this word, it symbolizes that Hitler had the idea to wipe out a whole race and by doing so he had to make the concentration camps and the crematories. Concentration camps were a place where Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and others persecuted in the Holocaust were sent to work or to be murdered by the hundreds. In concentration camps prisoners were humiliated, starved, beaten, forced to work and murdered in ways practically unimaginable. Some ways prisoners were killed were gas chambers, crematories, mass shootings, hung or starved to death. In the novel Night, the author Elie Wiesel witnesses a hanging of prisoners who tried to escape. In the Devil’s Arithmetic the same thing occurred and I noticed how both characters talked about the horror and fear on other’s faces. In the novel Night the French girl who helps out Elie is said to have dreamy...

Symbolism In The Devil's Arithmetic

...In the story, “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, by Jane Yolen, she explains exactly how murderous the camps were in WWII. Leading to having almost no clothes, shoes or a single options of what any Jew wanted to do even if it there was a complete chance of you dying. While in the poem, “The Little Polish Boy Standing With His Arms Up”, by Peter .L Fischl, the novel clarifies that WWII was the very disappointing day that the little polish boy had died in the 1960’s with guns in his face. In the book, “The Devil’s Arithmetic”, by Jane Yolen, she compassionately informs the reader about how the main character named Hannah is at a celibrasional party for passover and tastes wine for the first time to represent the gods, and discovers a completely different world that she thought was a dream and turn out Hannah’s family in the past as jews in a death camp, with her name in her dream changing to Chya.
