In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, is used to drive the plot in many different ways. He makes Hamlet think, or thinks he knows, a key aspect in the plot. Hamlet’s character traits mixed in with the story creates a plot that has transcended through generations. Shakespeare has many different techniques that express Hamlet’s character traits. Shakespeare is able to express Hamlet’s traits in his actions, his words, his thought, which are expressed in monologues and soliloquies, and what other people say about him. The Lion King, a movie based off of Hamlet, also uses these techniques to express the character traits of Simba, a character based off of Hamlet. Shakespeare uses these techniques to express Hamlet’s Character…show more content… In Act II Scene II, Hamlet says that Polonius, the chief councilman of the king, is a baby and that “That great baby you see there is not yet out of his swaddling-clouts.” When he says this, we can see that Hamlet can be overconfident at times and has the courage to do something not realizes what the consequences might be. Shakespeare also uses Hamlet’s thoughts to express character traits in the form of soliloquies. At the end of Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy, he states “The fair Ophelia!—Nymph, in thy orisons Be all my sins remembered.” Which is stating for Ophelia, the one he loves to pray for him. When Hamlet says this, it shows that Hamlet is truly passionate about Ophelia and really loves her. Hamlet’s actions also show a lot of his character traits. In Act III scene IV, Hamlet is talking to the queen when he finds out Polonius is hiding behind a tapestry spying on him for the queen. Hamlet then stabs his sword through the tapestry and kills Polonius. This is a way of showing that Hamlet can get mad easily and he doesn’t really think well when he is upset. Finally, Shakespeare uses other people to express the Character traits of Hamlet. Like when you can hear the other people say that he is insane. This shows that other people can not see what Hamlet’s motives for his actions
