Changes potentially happen as different factors naturally affect in each circumstances. We couldn’t avoid changing the things that automatically happen. However, from the novel The Chrysalids that I’ve read, which is written by John Wyndham, a fair number of people who are from Waknuk, trying to have a restraining order of changing. They are the strong believers of the true image of God who never want to break the rules. Their fear of changes which prevents them from progressing, being open-minded, and causing the tragic battles between them and the others. Initially, Waknuk people who are not progressing are one of the ways which result in being frightened to change. Some people fear to change, while Fringes people and the deviants don’t. When David and the group are captured in Fringes, the ruler of Fringes Gorden has a talk with David. He says “that is their great sin: they try to strangle the life out of Life ”(154) which ironically indicates Fringes people object to the idea that not to change. Meanwhile, the norms follow David and others to Fringes in order to discover more deviants. It turns out that the Fringes people have another understanding of change, so they start a fight. Besides, Uncle Axel who supports the deviational group “ put a new string on his bow” (118) to kill Alan Ervin for protecting the group from danger. He’s afraid Alan is going to tell the secrets of the group to the inspectors. Yet, the death of Alan makes his wife Anne completely distressed until she suicides. If people aren’t evil, Uncle Axel won’t kill Alan. The sacrifices of two lives wouldn’t happen. Apparently, battles typically cause by people’s argument. However, microcultures consist of how we identify ourselves within the global mainstream culture. There are multitudes of ways to participate in a microculture. Concentrated in metropolitan areas, close to 60% of the population resides in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or Calgary (Statistics Canada see Appendix B).
