...provided with hundreds of acres of normal habitat (Neyman 1). Zoos just simply do not have the money or the land to create a facility that comforts the animal's natural needs. Being in captivity for so long the animals natural behavior starts to change. Dr. Virgo, a behaviorists, conducted a study on Clouded Leopard and spent hours just looking significant signs and videotaping the animal. The clouded Leopard is one of the most solitary of the big cats and spend most of their day up in the trees of Nepal and along the Coastal areas of South China (Halberstadt 6). During Virgo’s observation of the leopard he noticed that the leopard hardly moved and seemed to be unamused with the treats provided and he diverges made. Finally Virgo came to a conclusion and said, "I realized finally that at some point, she had lost all interest in her world because it offered her nothing to do or to explore.”(Halberstadt 6). The leopard was completely bored with the world she lived in because she unable to explore further than the exhibit she was in. Further investigation from Dr. Virgo he discovered that this leopard had recently lost her mate which explains some of the unnatural behavior. The leopard went mad due to being left alone and licked her tail bald from the depression (Halberstadt 6). Not only does captivity of animals affect their most basic needs but also as equally important it changes the animals in a psychological fasion. Animals kept in small proximities develop psychological problems...

...UNESCO Paper BIO/100 The Tropical rainforest Heritage of Sumatra is made up of three national parks: Gunung Leuser National Park, Kerinci Seblat National Park and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. This protected area is home to estimate 10,000 plant species, including 17 endemic genera; more than 200 mammal species; and some 580 bird species of which 465 are resident and 21 are endemic. (UNESCO World Heritage Centre) One example of an endangered animal would be the Clouded Leopard. The Clouded Leopard is also found in China, Nepal, and Thailand, but in those countries they are in no danger of becoming extinct like they are in the Sumatra. The Green Turtle is another animal in the Sumatra that has been put on the Red List. Although there have been other records in Austrilia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras, and the Philippines of Green Turtles all doing well, except in Honduras where they are also Red Listed. There are several species that can be found in other regions that are thriving, but there are still many species that show no other records and are in trouble in the Sumatra. Examples like the Mainland Serow, Sumatrain Tigar, and the Hoogerwerf’s Rat are all species that are in danger. In recent news there have been stories of Sumatran Tigers being caught in snares that are set up by either poachers or in an attempt to eliminate predators that may prey on livestock. One animal that was caught last year...

...Johnny Joe Peña November 26, 2013 Save the Ocelots The Ocelots, also known as the Dwarf Leopard, are an endangered species that reside here in the U.S, and it is estimated that there are fewer than 50 of these spotted cats left. With most of them residing in south Texas; the Ocelot has a similar in appearance to a domestic cat. Its fur resembles that of a Clouded Leopard or Jaguar and was once regarded as particularly valuable. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Ocelots were once killed for their fur. However now, habitat loss is the biggest threat to The Ocelot, with only 1% of the South Texas area supports what is currently defined as optimal habitat for the Ocelot. Most of the Habitat occurs in the scattered patches probably too small to support Ocelots for extended periods of time. As a result, young cats dispersing from areas of suitable habitat have no place to go and most are probably hit by cars or die of disease or starvation. Road mortality is a more recent reason for their upcoming decline. As the Human race continues to populate and grow, and technology improves and innovates as rapidly as it does now. It is our responsibility to help save animals such as the Ocelots for we are one of the main reasons of their decline. They can also make very excellent pets, and can keep human beings company with its presence. While saving the Ocelots can be a huge effort, it can create jobs for wildlife-dependent communities, and maintaining healthy ecosystems for the endangered...

...Endangered Species in Cambodia Source: http://cambodia.panda.org/wwf_in_cambodia/endangered_species Special thanks to: Samnang SAN Student of Faculty of Forestry, Royal University of Agriculture for providing Khmer names to some of the wildlife below. Just 50 years ago, large herbivores like Banteng, Asian Elephant, and Eld’s Deer as well as predators like Indochinese tiger and leopard were so abundant in the Dry Forests of North and Northeast Cambodia that scientists compared this ecoregion to the savannas of East Africa. In the troubled decades that followed, however, habitat destruction and hunting greatly reduced animal numbers and diversity. Today, the largest intact dry forests in Indochina remain in north-eastern Cambodia in an area known as the Eastern Plains Landscape (EPL). Cambodia large variety of habitats both on land and in water are home to a significant diversity of threatened wildlife species. Among mammals, wild cattle and deer species as well as predators like tiger and leopard still roam the remote forests of the Eastern Plains Landscape, while a small population of Irrawaddy Dolphin inhabits the Cambodian section of the Mekong River. Birds are equally plentiful - especially Cambodia's populations of large waterbirds in both forests and wetlands stand out as globally significant. The Mekong River is also home to several endangered and iconic fish and reptile species, and critically endangered Siamese crocodile have been observed...

...Environmental science – U1L8 Most rain forests are located near the equator. Rain forests have a tropical wet climate and are quite humid all the time. The yearly rainfall is often more than 100 inches a year. Tropical rainforests produce almost half of the oxygen on earth. Scientists say that more than half of all the world's plant and animal species live in tropical rain forests. Rainforests only cover less than 6% of Earth's land surface. The rain forest is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet. The rainforest is home to many endangered animals and has more kinds of trees than any other place on the planet. A few of the massive amounts of endangered animals include primates, big cats, frogs and birds. Critically endangered animals include the Sumatran tiger, Brown Spider Sumatran, Orangutan Monkey, the Golden Mantella, Panamanian Golden Frog, and the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth. The rainforest is home to more than two thirds of the worlds plant species. Rainforest plants have to live in a warm humid environment. Rainforest plants include orchids, carnivorous plants, and Epiphytes. Orchids are the largest family of plants in the world. There are many different species that range greatly in size with some petals getting as long as 2 ½ ft long. Orchids come in every color, except black and can grow anywhere and on anything, like rocks, underground and on other plants and trees. Epiphytes also known as air plants, can be found everywhere in the rainforest but are mostly...

...Wildlife Conservation Adam Burdick Bryant & Stratton College NSCI 280 Professor Wooten 10/20/2013 Human beings are considered to be the most advance species on the planet. This also makes us the most intrusive species on the planet. We effect our environment more than any other living creature. Our populations continue to grow exponentially each year and as they do we intrude on other species habitats even more. Considering we are the most advanced species it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of all other species and do what we can to shorten the endangered species list. The conservation of wildlife is an incredibly important goal that all people should take part in. “Successful species conservation has often been defined as simply the avoidance of extinction” (Redford 2011.) This is the most important goal of anyone interested in wildlife conservation. It is important for us as a species to take responsibility and make the effort to keep other species away from extinction. Wildlife conservation is not something that can only be handled by professional members of organizations. Anyone can do their part to help protect a species in need. In some cases it is as simple as refraining from harmful activities such as hunting for sport. Hunting is a major conservation concern (Selvan & Veeraswami, p11.) If people raise awareness about how hunting effects the populations of large bodied animals perhaps we can help to reduce the damage done to these...

...The Divine comedy Summarry By: Dante Alighieri At the age of thirty-five, on the night of Good Friday in the year 1300, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood and full of fear. He sees a sun-drenched mountain in the distance, and he tries to climb it, but three beasts, a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf, stand in his way. Dante is forced to return to the forest where he meets the spirit of Virgil, who promises to lead him on a journey through Hell so that he may be able to enter Paradise. Dante agrees to the journey and follows Virgil through the gates of Hell. The two poets enter the vestibule of Hell where the souls of the uncommitted are tormented by biting insects and damned to chase a blank banner around for eternity. The poets reach the banks of the river Acheron where souls await passage into Hell proper. The ferryman, Charon, reluctantly agrees to take the poets across the river to Limbo, the first circle of Hell, where Virgil permanently resides. In Limbo, the poets stop to speak with other great poets, Homer, Ovid, Horace, and Lucan, and then enter a great citadel where philosophers reside. Dante and Virgil enter Hell proper, the second circle, where monster, Minos, sits in judgment of all of the damned, and sends them to the proper circle according to their sin. Here, Dante meets Paolo and Francesca, the two unfaithful lovers buffeted about in a windy storm. The poets move on to the third circle, the Gluttons, who are guarded by the monster Cerberus. These sinners...

...BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSYTEM LOSS An ecosystem is defined as ‘a biological community interacting organisms and their physical environment’ Source: Oxford dictionary – http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/ecosystem While by definition, biodiversity includes all living organisms (wild or domesticated) and the habitats (natural or man-made) within which they occur. Furthermore, the components of biodiversity are not independent because the patterns in nature are a result of interactions between genetic diversity and the environment’. Source: WWF - http://www.worldwildlife.org/bsp/publications/africa/181/Chap_2.html I am reminded of the John Muir quote “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.” To me that is how the world is, all interconnected by invisible threads- we never understand the depth of impact when one thread is broken until it is too late. Biodiversity and ecosystems around the world are being threatened at an alarming rate due to several environmental changes and by us humans. As well as the many moral and ethical reasons to preserve it for its own sake, biodiversity and ecosystems bring to us several services and resources such as food, water, pest control, medicines and moreover regulates the world’s climate. As a result of most of our food and necessities coming from these ecosystems, it is essential for the current and future generations that our biodiversity remains intact. Humans must ensure...

...HistoryThe earliest identifiably Thai kingdom was founded in Sukhothai in 1238, reaching its zenith under King Ramkhamhaeng in the 14th century before falling under the control of the kingdom of Ayutthaya, which ruled most of present-day Thailand and much of today's Laos and Cambodia as well, eventually also absorbing thenorthern kingdom of Lanna. Ayutthaya was sacked in 1767 by the Burmese, but King Taksin regrouped and founded a new capital at Thonburi. His successor, General Chakri, moved across the river to Bangkok and became King Rama I, the founding father of the Chakri dynasty that rules (constitutionally) to this day. There is evidence of human habitation in Thailand that has been dated at 40,000 years before the present. Similar to other regions in Southeast Asia, Thailand was heavily influenced by the culture and religions of India, starting with the Kingdom of Funan around the 1st century CE to the Khmer Empire.[18]Since the political reform of the absolute monarchy in 1932, Thailand has had 17 constitutions and charters.[24][25] Throughout this time, the form of government has ranged from military dictatorship to electoral democracy, but all governments have acknowledged a hereditary monarch as the head of state. Geography Totalling 513,120 square kilometres (198,120 sq mi),[1] Thailand is the world's 51st-largest country by total area. It is slightly smaller than Yemen and slightly larger than Spain. To provide customers with the best tasting, most nutritious choices in a wide range of food and beverage categories. Nestle owns several major consumer brands such as Stouffers, Nescafe, Kit-Kat, Carnation, Nestle Water, and many others. All in all, 30 of Nestle’s products earned 1 billion CHF or more during 2010, making Nestle a major force in the global food and beverage industry. NATURE OF CRISIS: THE CRISIS: Nestle, the world’s largest food conglomerate, has undergone a turbulent period since 2010. On March 14 2010, the Independent, a UK-based newspaper, stated that Nestle’s Kit Kat contained palm oil that results in deforestation and threatens the livelihood of the endangered Orang-utans. Environmental Group Greenpeace immediately requested Nestle to “give the rainforest a break” by ending its business partnership with Sinar Mas, its palm oil supplier in Indonesia, as soon as possible. The report spurred Nestle to cancel its contract with Sinar Mas—months after Sinar Mas was shown to be involved in illegal deforestation—but the corporation continues to purchase oil palm from Cargill, which is supplied in part by Sinar Mas. For its part, Cargill says it is investigating Greenpeace's allegations and if Sinar Mas is found to be committing illegal deforestation they will drop...
