Topic of this essay: Discuss the effects of one personal goal or hobby that you have pursued and enjoyed (or are enjoying) in your life, such as your education, your marriage, a place you are living in, a game, or a hobby.

The Coach
There are many hobbies that I have had as I get older, but none have made an impact as much as coaching has done for me. My son’s soccer team was chosen without a coach and was in jeopardy of not being able to play, so I did the right thing that any parent would do and I volunteered to be the head coach. That decision was a decision that has given me a new outlook on life and for my future. I never really thought that I would fall in love with coaching as much as I did. Coaching has become a very valuable hobby to me that has taught me many valuable lessons. Coaching has taught me to prepare in everything I do, it has taught me to be a better competitor, and it has given me the ability to be a better teacher.
Coaching as a hobby has been a very fun and eventful time in my life, but coaching has taught me to prepare for not only my games but for everything I do in life. I was a procrastinator when it came to completing tasks, and it would drive my family crazy. When I started coaching I noticed that I had to prepare well in advance, and my preparing started months before any practice or game had started. I go over and over in my head what the next practice is going to be like and I take the same approach to my work. I used to just show up and get the job done, which sometimes would run into simple problems or just plain run out of time. As soon as I started coaching, at work, I noticed that at the end of the workday I was preparing myself for the next day. I found myself completing more tasks and with less rework. Supervisors noticed the

Coach

...Roosevelt, Utah crowded into their locker room only to hear their coach ask them to turn in their jerseys. Coach Matt Labrum had had enough with how his players were acting off of the field. Some of his players were getting in trouble for skipping classes while others were receiving punishment for being involved in cyber-bullying. Labrum decided that the best way to teach his team a lesson was to disband the football team, requiring his players to earn it all back. Instead of practicing after school, it was required that the team participate in community service as well as character-building classes. Labrum said that if the boys participated and followed through with what was being asked of them they will have “earned the privilege to play.” To those who might hear of this story, it would be a little controversial; a whole team suspended because of mistakes that only some were making. In reality though, the coach made the right decision. “It is an honor to play sports and represent your entire school and community to other districts,” says Athletic Director, Nick McIlwain. “If a team or player is not representing the school and community in the proper light, as it sounds like with this situation, the coach was justified to take action to ensure that his players would live up to high ethical conduct and shine a positive light on the school and community.” As a coach, it is important not only to be a coach, but also a mentor and role model. By taking the steps necessary...

Becoming An Effective Coach

...Introduction Coaching is a useful way of developing people’s skills and abilities, and boosting performance (What is Coaching? How to be an Effective Coach, n.d.). In order to be a successful coach one has to plan and prepare for the session. The coach assists the coachee recognize his/her strengths and weaknesses in order to “gain an appreciation of his/her capabilities for growth and builds self-confidence”. During the initial coaching session, the intent is to establish rapport with the coachee and build a bond that will assist me with helping her fulfill her goals with positive results. Pre-Coaching Plan True coaching is the art of asking the one pertinent question, and then giving the client all the necessary space and time to work with it, all the way to complete and very practical client satisfaction (Cardon, 2008). Prior to my coaching preparation, I contacted a co-worker named Joyce Vaughn to ask if she would act as my coachee during the entirety of my course. My goal is to get to know her so that she is comfortable enough...

Head Basketball Coach Observation

...For this assignment were asked to go to a game or practice and observe a coach. The coach I chose to observe and write about was, the Head Basketball Coach here at Iowa Central Community College. The coach’s communication style was a mixture of submissive and command. He was quite for the majority of the game, taking on a nonverbal approach. When he did coach he was defiantly using the command style. His aggression towards the players and the game is made clear from the bench. At times I agree with it others I do not. Some of the players except the style well, while others react poorly. I have mentioned in past articles, the coach must figure out what each of his players responds best too. The coach motivates the players by talking to...

Personal Narrative: A Career As A Coach

...a national convention, wherever I go there always seems to be other coaches in attendance. The most common seem to be a life coach, health coach, or business executive coach. Regardless of what “type” of coach they are, there are some very similar patterns that you see in the ones who are unbelievably successful and clearly defined patterns in the ones you see that are struggling immensely. Struggling not only to stay congruent with the message they teach and tools they share with their clients, but also struggling financially and in their business....

...to lose in order to learn from their mistakes and to become a better athlete. I think sports fans who never played a sport, do not understand the true meaning of winning and losing. They need to realize no athlete or team is perfect. They never experienced the feelings that come with winning and losing. If they did, then they could better relate with their sports teams and favorite athletes. In the section, Professional Context, pages 143 and 144, discusses the coach’s role in winning and losing. Sociologist Harry Edwards quoted, “In American society, it is commonly accepted that the success or failure of an athletic unit depends almost entirely upon the competence or incompetence of its coach.” (Llewellyn, p. 143). I agree and disagree with this quote because it can go both ways. A coach should set the tone and example of how the team should act and play, but at the same time, it is up to the athlete to put in the hard work and dedication to the game and team. A team’s success does not...

Master Coach: The Psychology Of Coaching

...The psychology of coaching: What is the mindset or the psychology of a master coach? A master coach is like a general on the battlefield, the general must master their terrain and environment. Meaning they understand the specific theater that they are functioning in. In guerilla warfare, fighting in the sand or in extremely hot or cold climate. Similar with a Master Coach they also are keenly aware of the terrain; sports academia, non-profit, unions affiliated, hospitals, etc. They are aware of the players and opponents in the sphere of influence. Coach Wooden Research Paper

...Like many coach’s, I’ve always been a big fan of Coach John Wooden. He is a legendary college basketball coach who led UCLA to 10 national championships and one of the winningest programs in sports history. I’ve been an avid reader of any books I could find from Coach Wooden and highly recommend reading any of his books on leadership. He led with integrity and was an example of doing things the right way. We see a lot of coach’s now that relish in the spotlight and are driven by ego. They tirade on the sidelines yelling and screaming putting on a show. Coach Wooden, believed and demonstrated self-control and was a big believer in controlling your emotions. He always referred to himself as a teacher first. One of his major teachings...

Bear Football Coach Essay

...I am truly excited to have a chance at being the Head Football Coach at William Chrisman High School. I know that we are on the verge of something spectacular here. I know from where Coach Horn has brought this program and I would fulfill his vison for the Bears football program. My goal for this football program is to shape the lives of young men and their community. I can guide these young men, future fathers and community leaders by showing them love, discipline and leadership through actions not words. I know in this community there is a lack of male leadership and there for a lack of trust towards male authority figures and I want to change that trend and perception. I want to build the young men into pillars of their respective homes, their high school, their community and the city of Independence. Your Team Is Only as Good as Your Coach

...team’s cohesion has long been researched. The factors that coaches use in their coaching method and the way that athletes perceive their coach can make or break a winning team. This study examines the connection between a coach’s ability to coach and a team’s cohesiveness. A Team is Only as Good as Their Coach Numerous researchers have studied the correlation between a coach’s method of coaching and team performance. One of the most notable theoretical models used to investigate coaching behavior is Chelladurai’s Multidemensional Model of Leadership. This model shows the coach’s behavior as viewed from three perspectives: the behavior that is preferred by the athlete, the behavior that is required by the situation and the actual behavior of the coach. It has long been assumed that a team’s performance and satisfaction are a direct result of the coach’s behavior (Carron, Hausenblas & Eys, 2005). Athletes look to coaches that foster friendship, mutual trust heightened respect and interpersonal warmth (Shields, Gardner, Bredemeier & Bostro, 1997). What is a Coach’s Perfect Behavior? The perfect behavior of a successful coach is a combination of different styles of training, democratic style, autocratic style, social support and positive feedback (Carron, et. Al., 2005). It takes many years to become a perfect coach, it is often wondered if coaches are taught or born into their profession. Just as players come and go and continually get traded, so...

Coach Carter Essay

...Movies not only serve as a source of relaxation but also inspires people in many different ways. ‘Coach Carter’ is a movie that really has many valuable lessons on leadership qualities, motivation, team work, communication and goal setting. Here, I’m going to elaborate the way these concepts are integrated into the movie along with gripping real life examples and some valuable quotes. Economic recession happens periodically and employees would be laid off from the company during that time. Some of the companies equip their employees with vital skills during recession period and improve the organization’s prospect. This in turn would increase the loyalty and organizational commitment of the employees. The same concept is applied here in ‘Coach Carter’. CARTER’S INTRODUCTION Carter owns a sports shop and he was asked by his former high school, an inner city public school in Richmond, California https://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/surveys?id=3166059 https://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/surveys?id=3166059to train their defeated basketball team for a handsome salary. Carter’s first encounter with the Richmond’s team was while playing against St. Francis https://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrahmanfans/surveys?id=3166059 where his son is a freshmen. Coach Carter Review

...Coach Carter Review The fundamental elements of character for Coach Ken Carter, in the film “Coach Carter” were honesty, self-knowledge, and integrity. Honesty because he told the players what he expected from them in the beginning. Self-knowledge because he asked each player to think about what they wanted from the game of basketball, and helped them to realize it wasn’t just a game. The truth of the matter it was about finding your goal in what you want to accomplish in life. However playing basketball came out to be a chance for them to shine and lift a community and themselves out of negative situations, provided they make the correct decision. Finally integrity when it comes to holding players accountable for their behavior, Coach Carter stood by what he was teaching. He cancelled a game when he found that players were not honoring the promises they had made to him to stay eligible by the contract they signed. Coach Carter dealt with many things in this film such as unruly players, administration and parents that were not willing to go the extra mile in his support for education of his ball players. However, the biggest dilemma the coach faced in this movie was whether or not to suspend players or games because of a lack of adherence to rules he had set in place before the season started. He told the players they each must maintain a certain GPA, and must attend all classes, sit in the front of the classroom, and he would also be getting progress reports...

Meeting Coach Ken Carter

...On November 10th, Coach Ken Carter came to speak to the students at Radford University. I am a huge fan of the movie “Coach Carter”, and was very excited to see him in person and hear what he had to say. I was very impressed, to say the least. He started off his presentation by running down the aisles blowing a whistle. It startled me at first, but I thought it was an extremely creative opener. Since I was thoroughly involved in theatre back in high school, I couldn’t help but notice how Samuel L. Jackson captured Ken’s persona so perfectly. His demeanor and charismatic charm reminded me so much of the movie! Ken talked about several different things, but the main theme of his speech was to work hard and see it pay off. He brought up several valid points that I will definitely remember. One thing that he talked about that was important was to “look the part”. In my fraternity, we are always working hard to obtain a business casual attire when we conduct professional interviews, and I am also required to dress this way when I go to my internship. He brought up the fact that if you look the part, people will take you seriously. The best part of the presentation, in my opinion, was when he asked a young lady to come up to the front of the audience. He gave her a $20 bill. She respectfully took it. He then pulled out a $1 bill and autographed it. He then asked her which one she would rather have and she immediately pulled out the autographed $1 bill. He connected it to real life...
