...International Sports and Entertainment Center Rex W. Greene Athens State University The first thing to be said about this consortium’s idea is either the first time anyone has tried this or that no one had been successful at it. Still the idea meets with several problems, starting with getting land secured, getting the facilities built, getting the athletes and coaches to the venues, and getting investors in line for the convention, hotel, restaurants and retail outlets. Securing of land in that area could prove to be difficult. According to the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce website, there are no available properties in the area adjoining I-65 and I-565 (Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, 2011). Should that hurdle be conquered, the next challenge would be to get the athletes involved. Currently, the biggest Olympic development campuses in the United State are located in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Chula Vista, Calif., although there are also training centers in New York, Alabama and Michigan. It is the responsibility of each sport’s National Governing Body (NGB) to select athletes to train at these centers and to administer all coaching and technical training. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) offers the athletes free from and board, training facilities, sports medicine and sports science testing and analysis. (Osborne, 2008) The next hurdle would come in getting the private and...

...connection with the topic, a perspective that endowed him with a unique resolve to fight for the safety of Colorado citizens. But following his gut and doing what he felt was best for his constituents, ironically, turned out not to be what his constituents demanded of him. Morse’s ardent support of five gun-control bills—including HB 1224, probably the most controversial of them (Stokols)—eventually led to Morse’s and fellow Senator Angela Giron’s recall, making the two politicians the first in Colorado’s history to be unseated in special elections (Healy). Morse was at the forefront of the successful effort in Colorado to pass sweeping legislation that tightened gun regulations and implemented extended background checks (Ferner, “John Morse, Colo.”) in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings of 2012. For his efforts, he was pursued vehemently by pro-gun activists and organizations (Millhiser). Morse persistently fought for his beliefs despite knowing the political risk he was taking in the purple state of Colorado, where voters are sharply divided on the issue (“Colorado Voters”). With “no regrets” (qtd. in Ferner, “State Sen.”), Morse did what he 2014 Winning Essay: John F. ...ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Maybe John Elway isn’t done yet. The architect of the Denver Broncos added a new weapon for his suddenly prolific offense Monday afternoon, acquiring former Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis from the San Francisco 49ers. But with the NFL’s trade deadline not expiring until Tuesday afternoon, there's still time for Elway to double down. “There are still other things going on,” he said. “So who knows what’s going to happen.” Go ahead, strike while you’re hot. The Broncos could sure use an experienced left tackle about now, with rookie Ty Sambrailo gone for the year with a torn labrum and a platoon operating in his place. USA TODAY Vernon Davis traded to Broncos from 49ers “Sure, I’m always open,” Elway said. “We’re always...

...Introduction The beverage industry refers to the industry that produces drinks. Beverage production can vary greatly depending on which beverage is being made. The website ManufacturingDrinks.com explains that, "bottling facilities differ in the types of bottling lines they operate and the types of products they can run". Other bits of required information include the knowledge of if said beverage is canned or bottled, hot-fill or cold-fill, and natural or conventional. Innovations in the beverage industry, catalyzed by requests for non-alcoholic beverages, include: beverage plants, beverage processing, and beverage packing. Beverages industry is also a mature sector and includes companies that market nonalcoholic and alcoholic items. Since growth opportunities are limited, many members of the industry endeavor to diversify their offerings to better compete and gain share. Too, they may pursue lucrative distribution arrangements and/or acquisitions to expand their operations and geographic reach. Most equities in this industry are suitable for conservative investors. The largest companies offer reliable dividends, with regular increases, and above-average stock price stability. There are a few selections for those that are more enterprising. Such issues might serve a particular market niche, for example, energy drinks or developing overseas markets. The focus of this strategic management paper is Zest-O Corporation which happens to be under the Beverage Industry in the...

...Military Ethics PHI208: Ethics and Moral Reasoning Prof Whitney Easton 10 March, 2014 Military Ethics This paper will discuss the topic of military ethics using the utilitarian theory. It will also incorporate the ethical system of virtue ethics. “Military ethics is about our learning what is good and true and then having the courage to do and be what and who we ought to. For military ethics is not about his or her successes or failures; it is not about their virtues or vices. Military ethics is about our heritage and history, and it is about our responsibility to be men and women of character.” (Toner, 2003) Strong military ethics are vital to maintaining disciplined service members, to providing a clear moral compass to follow and developing good character as well. First, military ethics could easily be applied to either theory, utilitarian or deontological; however, the utilitarian theory seems to be the better fit of the two. Even though it may seem that choosing the utilitarian theory focuses strictly on the greater good for the mass, it is however, a straightforward and direct way to evaluate behavior. Another ethical system, virtue ethics, can be associated with military ethics because by its definition virtue ethics emphasizes the role of one’s character and the virtues that one’s character embodies for determining or evaluating ethical behavior. (Wikipedia) The ethics that the military services have established follow a similar intent amongst the men and...

During the shredding process, the fibers are washed with water to help extract the sugars. This process uses a stainless steel autoclaves, stainless fermentation tanks, and stainless pot stills. And the third method used also is the "Diffuser Process" whereby uncooked 'piñas' are fed through mechanical shredders to break down the fibers. This involves raw extraction of the carbohydrates of the previously shredded piñas and their dilution in water, with the help of a diffuser. The product is then fed through an in-line cooker. This process uses the columnar stills. In most distilleries for making...

...In 1896, the Hungarian born Jew, Theodor Herzl, published his book Der Judenstaat, or The Jewish State (Sheilds, Sep.26). This book marks the birth of the modern Zionist movement, as it was the first to propose the idea of the creation of a separatist Jewish state. In 1917, the Zionist movement gained currency with the issuance of the Balfor Declaration, a letter written by the United Kingdom’s foreign secretary to Baron Rothschild, a leader of the Jewish community in England (Cleveland, 242). The declaration stated that the government of Great Britain would support and facilitate the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine(Cleveland, 243). Palestine, to justify the wholesale appropriation of Palestine for a Jewish nation, was characterized as a land without a people, which would be enriched by its new Jewish population (Sheilds, Sep. 26). This was in fact erroneous. Palestine was not an under populated waste, but a semi-urbanized country in its own right (Cleveland, 248). The ensuing struggle over Palestine, which claimed thousands of lives and spanned over half a century, is marked by two widely differing historical narratives. The Israeli historical narrative of this conflict is one of intense heroism against impossible odds, of catastrophic loss and tremendous suffering, difficult choices and terrible necessity, desperate hope and unending courage; this narrative is born not only to feed a sense nationalism and solidarity, but also as a means of promoting their...

...Memorandum To: CEO of Toy Company From: Elementary Division Manager Date: 10/22/2014 A. Constructive Discharge as a Legal Concept relevant to this scenario The company attorney has informed us that Mr. Smith, a former employee, has filed a claim of constructive discharge under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Mr. Smith claims due to our new production schedule we practiced religious discrimination by forcing him to work on a religious holy day. According to the AAUW “Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion.” (AAUW, 2014) Contructive discharge happens once an employeer engages in a practice that creates an intolerable work life for any of the above listed protected groups. According to the University of Chicago Law Review, there are two different tests that have been developed for deciding if an employee has been constructively dishcarged. The first test is a reasonable person test. This test simply looks at a reasonable person and decides if they would have found the conditions to be inolerable. (Finnegan, 1986) The next test is an intent test. This test requires the plaintiff to show that the conditions were intolerable but also show that these conditions were created with the intent of forcing the employee to resign. (Finnegan, 1986) I believe Mr. Smith’s allegations will not pass either test. ...

...Trident University International Willie Bates Module 1 Case 1 ITM 524: Foundations of Information Technology Management Dr. Mina Richards January 21, 2014 Introduction A socio-technical paradigm combines the social and technical paradigms, and could be described as the study of the relationships between the social and technical parts of any system (Coakes, 2002). Researchers and some managers have acknowledged that technical and social factors interact to influence organizational outcomes. Significant changes in the workplace are the result of new and advanced technology. According to F. Land, there are two sometimes conflicting set of values that underlie socio-technical thinking (Land, 2000). The first is a belief in the importance of humanistic principles. The main task of the designer is to enhance the quality of working life and the job satisfaction of the employee. In turn the achievement of these objectives will enhance productivity and yield added value to the organization. The second set reflects managerial values. Socio-technical principles are merely instruments for achieving primarily economic objectives. Humanistic objectives have no value in themselves but if their achievement produces a better performance from employees leading to the fulfillment of the economic objectives well and good. This paper will illustrate how the first principle proves to shaping the final outcome in Painter’s...

...Black and White on Wall Street by Joseph Jett, with Sabra Chartrand. William Morrow, 387 pages, $25. Remember Joseph Jett? He occupies a curious place in this decade's pantheon of scandalous black American men. His 15 minutes of infamy occurred in April 1994, about two and a half years after Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings and two months before O.J. Simpson's Bronco chase. A 36-year-old bond trader at Kidder Peabody & Company, Mr. Jett was accused of defrauding his firm of $350 million. When I first read of Mr. Jett and saw a photo of him–with his bemused smirk and huge, James Baldwin eyes–I felt a perverse pride that a young buppie might be as bold a crook as Ivan Boesky or Michael Milken; and a sense of relief that here, for once, was a scandal about a black man that had nothing to do with sex. How wrong I was. After five years and three grueling investigations, Mr. Jett has never been convicted of fraud. Moreover, his downfall offers a chilling case study of how machismo and sexual paranoia work in the financial community. At the center of his autobiography–co-written with Sabra Chartrand–is the story of what happens when some Wall Street traders renowned as Big Swinging Dicks find, in their midst, a Big Swinging Black Dick. It's the same with any my-side-of-the-story exposé–open Mr. Jett's book and up pops the question: Is it credible? Quite. Unlike a lot of memoirists, Orlando Joseph Jett (evidently, no one ever nicknamed him O.J.) does not present himself as...
