...When people think of the Roman Colosseum, they often think about the huge stone stadium structure and gladiator fights. While this is true, the Colosseum was much more than this. The Colosseum is not only an ancient structure, but also a symbol representing the power of the Roman Empire. This structure, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, entered construction in 72 CE in the reign of Vespasian. This building, which was built on a site that was once the lake and gardens of Emperor Nero’s Golden House, was part of a larger construction project by Emperor Vespasian in order to return Rome to its glory that it was before the recent civil war. The Colosseum was completed and first opened for business in the year 80 CE under the reign of Vespasian’s...

...The Roman Colosseum is primarily known for its Gladiatorial Games. As some people know, directors have made movies about the gladiatorial games, such as Gladiator and Spartacus, movies based out of the Colosseum. These movies were inspiring, so that led to researching whether the Roman Colosseum was really a place for fighting or was it for other events too? There is more to learn about the history of the Colosseum. The history of the Colosseum should not be taught as a battleground but as a place for chariot races, plays, mock naval battles, and festivals. ...They, like us, had the senate. The word senate means “Assembly of Elders.” This comes from when the elders would get together to form the senate. The elders would do it because they were considered wiser, so they would make the right decisions for the people. This way of ruling carries on to this day, with more and more converting to this kind of government, the people leading the people. Another reason I was attracted to Rome was Mythology. I have always liked Greek mythology and Roman Mythology, and Rome was the center of that for a really long time. It has temples, statues and so much more to offer in the way of that kind of research. You could wander the city for hours at a time just looking at the statues and temples. Rome also has a lot to offer attraction wise, both people made and nature made. For example, Rome was built on rolling hills and has a lot of green and nature. Because of that, Rome is a huge city, spread out, jumbled up. Because of the way it was laid out, it has a lot of areas, like parks, but they are pretty far apart. However, those parks are pretty...

Allingham, Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University (Canada) [Victorian Web Home —> Authors —> Music, Theatre, and Popular Entertainment —> Theatres] Much of the following information has been gathered from Frederick and Lise-Lone Marker's in "A Guide to London Theatres, 1750-1880" in The Revels History of Drama in English, Vol. VI: 1750-1880 (1975). They, in turn, consulted H. Barton Baker's History of the London Stage (London, 1904), Allardyce Nicoll's A History of English Drama 1660-1900 (Cambridge, 1966), E. B. Watson's Sheridan to Robertson (Cambridge, Mass., 1926), and The London Stage (Carbondale, Ill., 1962-68). Phyllis Hartnoll's Concise Oxford Companion to the Theatre offers more detailed information about many of these 19th c. theatres. For supplementary texts, consult the "Reference List" below. Adelphi (Strand) Built in 1806 opposite Adam Street by merchant John Scott (who had made his fortune from a washing-blue) as the Sans Pareil to showcase his daughter's theatrical talents, the theatre was given a new facade and redecorated in 1814. It re-opened on 18 October 1819 as the Adelphi, named after the imposing complex of West London streets built by the brothers Robert (1728-92) and James (1730-94) Adam from 1768. The name "Adelphoi" in Greek simply means "the brothers." Among the celebrated actors who appeared on its stage...

...Journal of Economic Geography Advance Access published June 22, 2005 Journal of Economic Geography (2005) Page 1 of 30 doi:10.1093/jeg/lbi001 Video games production networks: value capture, power relations and embeddedness Jennifer Johns* Abstract This paper has two main aims. Firstly to conceptualize the production networks of the video games industry through an examination of its evolution into a multi-million dollar industry. Secondly, to use the video games industry to demonstrate the utility of Global Production Network approaches to understanding the geographically uneven impacts of globalization processes. In particular, three key notions of value, power and embeddedness are used to reveal the most powerful actors in the production network, how they maintain and exercise their power, and how the organization of production is manipulated as a result. It is argued that while hardware production is organized by console manufacturers using truly global sourcing strategies, the production of software is far more complex. In fact, software production networks are bounded within three major economic regions: Western Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. This paper seeks to explain how and why this has occurred. Keywords: video games, global production networks, value, power, embeddedness JEL classifications: L14, L23, L82 Date submitted: 4 October 2004 Date accepted: 12 April 2005 1. Although literature on the field of business management dates back to the late nineteenth century, the study of human service management and administration is relatively recent. Most of the literature has come from the field of non-profit management such as social work, the arts, education, research, science, religion, philanthropy, and other such activities. It can be seen through some evidences of buildings from which many of them we can admire nowadays. These includes Egyptians pyramids, Colosseum, Chinese great wall, Taj Mahal, cathedrals, and many others great buildings.
