And it was the women who led the first revolt.” The way female characters speak is also different from men’s, “ "Is that enough?" she asked when she had poured in about half of the water in the bowl."A little more... I said a little. Are you deaf?" Okonkwo roared at her. She set the pot on the fire and Okonkwo took up his machete to return to his obi. "You must watch the pot carefully," he said as he went…” They speak very little and only when it is needed, they do not argue, protest or reveal dissatisfaction. They are faithful, complaisant and brave; they sacrifice their own wishes and needs for the family needs. Women do their housework obligations: cook, bring up children and please their husband. One of the things they do in the book is …show more content…
He explained himself in the following sentence, “That was my place in the world, my story, the story of myself, the story of my people. I was already familiar with stories of different people.” The use of present tense by the author is not only evident in the book but also in real life, “I think what it is -- I suspect, from some of the things readers from abroad say to me.” British speakers would say “readers from abroad have said to me”. It is also exceptionally noticeable how often he uses synonyms and repetition to give a better perception and power to his words; “I wanted that moment of change, in which one culture was in contact, in conflict, in conversation with another culture, and something was going to happen.”, “I knew that I wanted the story to be true, true in the way fiction can be true.” The pauses which author take while structuring his sentences catch the eye; it is evident that his way of thinking differs from talking. Again, his English is extremely accurate not only in the book, but also in daily life. The use of short, but at the same time descriptive sentences gives a stronger influence on a reader or listener; this is probably the most distinctive feature of Achebe as a writer, “At last the hen was plucked clean. Ekwefi tried to pull out the horny beak but it was too hard. She

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...
