...Compare-and-Contrast Essay E. Ashlea Griffith COM/155 August 24, 2013 Tiffany Tang Compare-and-Contrast Essay In the past thirty years obesity in children and teens have nearly tripled. More than one-third of adults and over 12.5 million children and teens are obese in the United States (Zinczenko, 2006). This is rather extreme, but there are ways to reduce these numbers. Two popular ways are; The Alli Diet which is a fad diet, and The Abs Diet, that is a diet and exercise program. According to Zinczenko (2006), Studies have shown that 80 percent of fad diets fail, and the weight will be gained back right after the diet has ended. The Alli Diet is a dietary supplement that is taken three times a day, 30 minutes before a meal that follows a strict diet. The Abs Diet is an exercise program where there are different options for everyone- whether it is at the gym or at home, with or without equipment. The Alli Diet may be what’s in style, but when considering the physical effects, nutritional value, and health benefits, The Abs Diet is healthier as a whole. The effects of both The Alli Diet and The Abs Diet can be physically life changing. The Alli pill is designed to be taken with a reduced- calorie, low-fat meal containing 15-30 percent fat depending on each phase and stops the body from absorbing about 25% of the fats that is consumed. The Alli Diet is meant for short-term...

The purpose of my essay is to compare and contrast the expenses, health benefits, and weight loss between these two methods. Exercising to lose weight can be expensive, if you don’t do your research. Most exercise plans cause for gym equipment, memberships, video tapes, and clothing. These expenses can be lowered by finding an alternative exercise, which doesn’t cause for purchasing Items. Dancing and step aerobics can be done in your own home, avoiding membership fees. Unlike exercising, dieting doesn’t require equipment to lose weight. Dieting requires nutritious food, that’s low in calories. Dieting can get expensive, if you choose to lose weight by taking pills. Diet pills are required to be taken over a long period. To avoid these expenses, you should choose a healthy eating plan that will stick with you for the rest of your life. Exercising has its benefits. There are many exercises you can do to maintain good health. Some examples are, walking, running, aerobics, and weight training. These exercises prevent obesity; reduce the risk of dying from heart disease. Compared to dieting, if you don’t exercise; this doubles your risk of having heart disease. ...Mendonca DISCUSSION The objective of this study is to examine the differences between the vegan and omnivore diet and to study the relationship of these diets to body composition, blood lipids, and the serum hormones vitamin D and parathyroid hormone. As seen previously, those eating an omnivore diet consumed significantly more dietary protein than those consuming a vegan diet (2; 3). The values we observed for dietary protein in both the vegan and the omnivore groups were similar to those seen by Hadded et al. (3) and Janelle and Barr (2). The women in our study eating an omnivore diet exceeded the RDA for protein. In contrast to other studies of vegetarians and vegans, our data also showed that vegan women met the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein (50 g) (7). Low protein intake has been shown to cause secondary hyperparathyroidism (4), but this is not seen in our vegan group perhaps because the protein intake in the vegan group did not fall as below as 0.7g/kg; the level that resulted in hyperparathyroidism in the Kerstetter et al. study (4) and is above the recommended intake of 0.8g/kg (7). Total fat, saturated fat, and dietary cholesterol have been previously reported to be higher in omnivores (2; 3) and our data agree with those findings. This is likely due to the inclusion of meat and dairy products, high in protein and fat, in the omnivore diet Fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C were seen to be significantly greater in past studies of vegans, (2); however...

...Heritage Assessment NRS-429V | Culture and Cultural Competency in Health Promotion John Thomas 3/24/13 The Heritage Assessment tool is primarily used as a device to evaluate health maintenance, health protection, and health restoration of a person’s cultural beliefs and values (Spector, 2006). This assessment helps aid in providing quality patient care in that it helps to meet and respect the needs of different types of people and their respective backgrounds (Spector, 2002). This particular paper serves to compare and contrast the ethnicities of Indian, Caucasian, and Arabic families using health maintenance, health protection, and health restoration as evaluation markers. The purpose was to identify and isolate different groups of people and their unique health practices and traditions that were based off their heritage or background. An assessment of these ethnicities led to several discoveries that I believe could truly improve our methods of health care. Cultural awareness is an essential part of life, especially in this country that is considered to be the melting pot of the world. Cultural awareness can be defined as understanding and appreciation the difference between oneself and people of other backgrounds and cultural beliefs (Shen, 2004). Cultural competence is a term used to refer to awareness and skill acquired to be able to care for people of different ethnicities and cultures (Purnell, 2002). The heritage assessment tool serves as a questionnaire of sorts...

...replacement of tissues. Nutrition is also the science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans. As well as a good source of nourishment; food. Why is nutrition essential to our daily lives? Being without an essential nutrient or not having as part of our regular diet is often linked to specific illnesses and chronic diseases. For example, high blood pressure, brittle bones, and various forms of cancer. 2. What is the connection between nutrition and health? No matter how hard we try to ignore it, this old adage still rings true. “You are what you eat”. Good health is largely dependent on good nutrition, so much so that doctors trace many physical and emotional ailments back to a diet deficient in vitamins and minerals. Food is the primary source for health and nutrition, although vitamins and supplements act as substitutes. Many medicines and drugs designed to improve health contain synthetic replicas of enzymes and chemicals found in nutrient-dense foods. A well-balanced diet that offers consistent health and nutrition is often extolled for encouraging long life, lowering the incidence of disease, and helping sick people recover. In contrast, inadequate nutrition and poor-quality foods can generally cut life span and subject a person to a range of diseases and deformities. The body needs fuel and building-blocks in order to create the energy it needs for metabolism, elimination of wastes, and execution of its immune, digestive,...

...A Review of Literature of MEDIA’S INFLUENCE ON BODY IMAGE and its AFFECTS Introduction Body image is a central part of mental and physical well-being, and because the mass media are pervasive communicators of social standards, they greatly influence people’s perception by setting unrealistic standards for what is “normal” for body weight and appearance. Thus, reinforcing people to emulate and believe what they see and hear. There is an extensive amount of studies on the effects of media exposure on body dissatisfaction and the experience of negative thoughts and esteem about one’s body, which is linked to a range of physical and mental health problems, including eating disorders and low self-esteem. Body Image: Self-Esteem and Identity Several individual variables predict or influence the relationship between media exposure and body disturbances. Most of the research has been done with women and girls, for whom the “body perfect” ideal is ultra-thin, and whose media models are typically underweight (Tantleff-Dunn, 1999). To determine whether viewing images of thin models influences how women feel about their bodies, there were many studies done using the social comparison framework, finding that women engage in “upward social comparisons,” comparing themselves to the thin models depicted in the media. When women believe that they do not measure up to the models, they feel more negatively about their own weight and body. For example, Lin and...

...millions of people worldwide especially the African American race and is often limited to the Asian culture. According to the American College of Cardiology CVD is the largest single cause of death among women. The economic impact in the United States although difficult to estimate figures show an amount over $400 billion was spent in 2006 on health care as a result of lost productivity compared to other deadly diseases, (American Heart Association [AHA], 2007). The cohort follow-up study can either be viewed from a prospective or retrospective view. A prospective cohort study is when the investigators begin enrolling subjects and collecting baseline exposure information, none of the subjects has developed any of the outcomes of interest. In contrast, retrospective studies are conceived after some people have already developed the outcomes of interest. The main objective from either perspective compares the risks and...

...Introduction The heart is like an engine, pumping blood throughout the body. Over time, when this pump cannot distribute enough blood throughout the body to meet its needs, it develops into a condition known as congestive heart failure. When the right side of the heart fails, the lungs cannot pick up oxygen due to the heart’s inability to pump enough blood to them. In contrast, left sided heart failure is related to the heart’s inability to pump an adequate amount of oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Only one side of the heart may be affected, although it is possible for both sides of the heart to be involved at the same time. Description of the Condition According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood institute (NHLBI), 5.7 million...

...Ashley Chong Derek Gladwin Essay #2 2/7/2015 Does sex sell? It is quite common nowadays for a young woman to flip through a consumer magazine or turn on the television and find provocative images of beautiful women, and men, in revealing outfits selling a wide range of branded goods. Sexual imagery, varying from modest to the obscene, is used throughout much of the commercial advertising in today’s social media. According to Branding Strategy Insider, “Sexual information does grab attention. Sex evokes a hardwired emotional response that is linked to species survival” (Daye). In the advertising world, employing sexual imagery is an effective means to draw attention to a product. However, the marketing industry must be wary of images that traditionalize or stereotype male-female gender roles. The above advertisement is a good example of an advertisement that uses sexual imagery to draw attention to a product. The above image shows two women holding two different food bars. Both women are of similar height, ethnicity and hair color. The differences between the women are that the woman on the left is a plus-size woman holding a sugary candy bar whereas the woman on the right is a lean woman holding a Detour protein bar. The text at the top of the advertisement states, “There’s Candy Bars...Then There’s PROTEIN Candy Bars.” (Cape). The advertisers of the referenced image use a, “if you eat this product, then you get this result” sort-of comparison when describing...

...Antioxidant From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells). Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. As a result, antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols, ascorbic acid or polyphenols.[1] Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging; hence, plants and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases. Low levels of antioxidants, or inhibition of the antioxidant enzymes, cause oxidative stress and may damage or kill cells. As oxidative stress might be an important part of many human diseases, the use of antioxidants in pharmacology is intensively studied, particularly as treatments for stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. However, it is unknown whether oxidative stress is the cause or the consequence of disease. Antioxidants are also widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements in the hope of maintaining health and preventing diseases such as cancer...
