...Eugene Choufani September 16, 2016 The Catcher in the Rye Reading Journal This book is certainly one open to a lot of controversy and debate, yet that is what makes it such an interesting read. The Catcher in the Rye surely wouldn't be everyone’s cup of tea, however I find it an exciting and compelling book, with just a bit of reality poured in along with some humour. Despite being written in 1951, I think many teenagers, just like myself, would be able to relate to the various themes present in the book. I find the main character, Holden Caulfield, absolutely intriguing and as I read the first 7 chapters, it was really fascinating to get inside the head of the strange, rebellious protagonist....

...movies or films that I enjoy very much watching are movies based on real life such as Documentaries and Biographies, and for this specific assignment I chose to write about the film “Not Without my Daughter” which portrays the true story of Betty Mahmoody, played by Sally Field and her daughter Mahtob, played by Sheila Rosenthal, and their brave and heroic escape from Iran and her abusive husband and father Sayed (Moody) Mahmoody, played by Alfred Molina. If the title of this movie hasn’t already given you an idea of what this movie is about then you’re in for a perplexing and frustrating ride of your life. “Not Without my Daughter” made its debut in 1991 during the raid of the US embassy in Iran, which caused a lot of controversy due to the graphic and misrepresentation of the Muslim faith and the Iranian culture, and with that being said I believe it had many flaws. But, before I go any further I am going to take this opportunity and give you a very brief and short summary about the plot of this movie to help you understand what it is I mean about this film being “flawed”. Moody (Molina) was a successful physician specializing in anesthesia who lived with his family in Michigan. One day while he was home with his family he suggested to his wife (Field) that he would like to take a family vacation to Iran so that his family can meet her and their six year old daughter Mahtob (Rosenthal). Despite Betty’s (Field) deep fears about visiting Iran especially...

...that his own children have starved to death as a result of the lack of food. Although the Joads decide to press on, the first days in the "promised land" of California are tragic, as Grandma Joad dies. The remaining family members move from one squalid camp to the next, looking in vain for work and struggling to find food. Connie, husband to Tom's pregnant sister Rose of Sharon, abandons the Joads, his wife included, in hopes of being more successful in the search for food and work. The Joads are met with hostility in California. The overcrowded camps are full of starving migrants who are often nasty to each other. The locals who are fearful and angry at the flood of migrants, label them "Okies." Work is next to impossible to find, or work pays such meager wages that a family's full day's work cannot buy a decent meal. While staying in a ramshackle camp known as a "Hooverville," a heated argument causes a deputy sheriff to shoot a woman and results in Tom knocking the sheriff unconscious. Casy takes credit for Tom's act as Tom is still on parole. Police officers arrive to arrest Casy and announce their intention to burn the Hooverville. The Joads move on and find employment picking peaches, however, they discover that they have only been hired to break a workers' strike. Tom runs into Casy who, after being released from jail, has begun organizing workers, in the process, making enemies among the landowners. When the police hunt Casy down and kill him in Tom's presence, Tom retaliates...

...One of the greatest advancements in the medical world today was the discovery of HeLa cells. Prior to the discovery of HeLa cells scientists around the world had to use mortal cell lines. This meant that scientists were all performing experiments on different cell lines and therefore had limited ability to share results. HeLa cells were immortal. HeLa cells are cells that grow and multiply while being invincible to bacteria, medications, and other external factors. These were the first cells taken from a human (without consent), grown in a laboratory, and showed signs of immortality. Although they were a great discovery, they also brought a lot of controversy into the world about whether or not the doctors should have taken her cells without...

Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes. In my eyes there are three main forms of social media today that are thriving well in society. The second type of media is sites like Open Salon and Blogger which are blog sites where individuals can write and be reviewed by their peers. The third is of course YouTube, this site allows others to see certain moments in random people’s lives that can be touching or entertaining. YouTube’s basic purpose is just what it advertises, broadcast yourself. 2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society? I believe the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society is connecting people no matter the amount of distance. From childhood she was very religious, following all vratas and worships. She especially worshipped Tulasidevi and bathed 2 or 3 times daily in the Ganga. She was Lord Chaitanya's second wife after Lakshmipriya departed this world. The pious brahmana Sri Kashinatha mishra arranged this marriage. The marriage was held with great pomp and proper rituals. The whole Navadwipa came to see this divine pastime that even demigods cannot see. The Lord hardly gave her attention after this marriage. She bore all this quietly. The first is called the Old Testament and the second portion is called the New Testament. THESE MAIN QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED IN GENESIS 1- Why do we live? 2- Why do we die? 3- Why does the evil exist? CREATION IN 1ST VERSION - God created man in his own image. - God created the man and female at the same time - God created man after he ended all his work. - The first creation story says that grass and trees were created before the sun, moon and stars, whereas we know that stars were created first, then the earth and the moon. ...Cyber Bullying- Should Schools be Held Responsible Abstract We’ve all heard the saying “stick and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Sure words don’t hurt physically, but to those who have been or are currently victims of cyberbullying words can be the difference between life and death. Technology such as smart phones, tablets and the internet allows students spend more time being connected. With this cyberbullying is becoming more frequent. Texting, instant messaging and over the social networks are just a few ways that the cyberbullies can reach their victims. A few of the forms of cyberbullying are harassment, cyberstalking and impersonating their victim. Cyber bullying has become a serious problem amongst teens. The victim can begin to feel inadequate and self-conscious causing the victim to become depressed to the point of committing suicide. In the past the cyberbully had no consequences to their action. Two such cases are addressed in this paper. States are now passing laws to address this issue and making schools responsible for developing anti-bullying policies. Cyber bullying- Should Schools be held responsible Matt was on both the Citizenship and Honor Rolls in Middle School. ...established that the book actually comes from the 2nd century B.C.” (33). During this era, the Jewish population was persecuted by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who went so far as to desecrate the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem by constructing a statue to the Greek god Zeus, much like King Nebuchadnezzar does in chapter 3 (Porteous 57). The biggest clue that Bible scholars notice when questioning the authorship is how accurate the succession of kingdoms is mentioned throughout the book. The author’s ability to hint at events that occur centuries after Daniel’s lifespan lead scholars to suspect an alternative author (Jeffrey 349). The book of Acts seems so straight forward as a mere history of the early Church that one can hardly imagine the controversy behind the tedious details in the critical examination thereof. Before one can begin any type of in-depth study of a particular passage, some questions have to be answered, or at a minimum, the issues have to be examined because definitive or absolute answers are not always within one’s grasp. The issues in question are authorship, dating, and purpose of the writing in light of historical circumstance. Traditionally, the authorship of the book...

...Post-modernism in Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet: a comparison of two creative works from two different periods. In 1996, Baz Luhrmann directed “Romeo + Juliet”, a modern twist on the famous tragedy play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in 1597, in which the main characters Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet where portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. While some praise the strange interpretation of the old tale, there are also those who condemn the rendition as destructive and disrespectful to the great work of Shakespeare. There will always be two sides to every story and this study will take that into consideration as well as comparing the two different yet similar works to see how post modernism has played a role in Luhrmann’s version of Romeo and Juliet. Postmodernism has been given many definitions. Some say it’s simply the outlook that the generation of late twenty first century has on life which entails the mistrust and dismissal of theories that existed before such as religion, ethics and law. According to these youths, the difference between right and wrong or what the meaning of life is based solely on that individual’s perspective. In film, the idea of postmodernism is somewhat similar as it’s an artist medium in which to undermine social norms and present one’s individual belief. The difference lies in that postmodernism in film concerns bringing in many aspects of popular culture to produce something...

...During the late 1930’s the United States was in a state of increased unrest as the Great Depression was ravaging the nation. Distress in Europe was causing pressure to build on the government to begin thinking about the next decade as one that would decide quite a bit about world affairs for decades to come. In 1933 Adolf Hitler had become chancellor of Germany and as he began to consolidate his power he was rapidly developing an environment that would sustain his plans for the Third Reich. He viewed the treatment of Germans after World War I as unnecessarily drastic and used this in his emphatic speeches to convince the German people to stand up against the sanctions imposed on them by the Treaty of Versailles. He viewed the treaty as a continuation of French aggression by diplomatic means through occupation and war indemnity. The ensuing war reparations had effectively crippled the German economy and after Black Tuesday and the collapse of the United States economic system the Germans could no longer rely on loans provided by the US and rapid inflation caused their currency to skyrocket to nearly four billion Reichsmarks for every one US dollar. The German government had been struggling to find a leader and after repeated votes of non-confidence towards the existing system the Nazi party, and it’s radical agenda perpetrated by Adolf Hitler, gained complete control of the German government. He preached that the German people were the rightful race to rule the...

...SINGAPORE MASS RAPID TRANSIT: GOING OFF TRACK On January, 2012, Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Phaik Hwa Saw, resigned from her position after two major breakdowns on the North-South Line in December 2011. SMRT was a public transport operator in Singapore, with a transportation network that comprised buses, trains and taxis. The two breakdowns were arguably the largest public transportation incidents in Singapore’s history, occurring two days apart and affecting more than 220,000 commuters. Widespread public outrage ensued, with heavy criticism of Saw for the breakdowns and her mismanagement of the corporation. Prior to the incidents, Saw’s tenure as CEO had been associated with a particularly prosperous period in the history of SMRT. She had successfully navigated SMRT through its post-merger transition process and achieved a significant growth in profits. She had also transformed SMRT from a company focusing solely on transportation to one that provided all-around service and transportation to commuters. Why did Saw become the target of public discontent? Were the breakdowns a result of her lack of ability to lead SMRT effectively? LEADERSHIP HISTORY Prior to Saw’s appointment in December 2002, SMRT had been traditionally led by men with engineering backgrounds and experience in military or public service. SMRT was first led by Leong Geok Lim, who had a degree in engineering. He was widely...

...Chapter 1 The Dimensions of Psychology Summary: Psychology is an academic and applied discipline that involves the scientific study of mental functions and behaviors. Psychology has the immediate goal of understanding individuals and groups by both establishing general principles and researching specific cases, and by many accounts it ultimately aims to benefit society. In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist, and can be classified as a social, behavioral, or cognitive scientist. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and neurobiological processes that underlie certain cognitive functions and behaviors. Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. Researchers tried to understand the basic elements of consciousness using a method known as introspection. Wilhelm Wundt, founder of the first psychology lab, was an advocate of this position and is often considered the founder of structuralism, despite the fact that it was his student, Edward B. Titchener who first coined the term to describe this school of thought. Functionalism formed as a reaction to the structuralism and was heavily influenced by the work of William James and the evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin. Functionalists sought to explain the mental processes in a more systematic and accurate...
