"Live, then, and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget that, until the day God deigns to reveal the future to man, the sum of all human wisdom will be contained in these two words: Wait and hope.” (The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas—abridged version)
As the wheels rolled down the landing site, I could already sense the difference between Cuba and the United States. The airplane had no automatic staircase; passengers had to get down through the emergency stairs. There was no terminal! From the landing site we had to walk into a small room less than 100 by 100 feet to wait for our passports to be stamped. Then we passed through immigration and security. Plastic boxes used along with a metal detector were the only technology available. The lack of personnel turned the process of checking out the luggage into an incredibly arduous task. …show more content…
As I stepped outside I became astonished. It was as if I had travelled through a time machine to the past. You could see smog and thick dust filling the air. Cars such as, 1968 Mustangs, filled the streets around the airport. It was as if Cuba had been stuck in the 1950’s and had only worsened in condition. To make matters worse, while we were on our way to Havana, the car’s engine gave out the second my family and I sat down. Not only that, but we had to sit in a filthy white van with no seats, no air conditioner, no seat belts, and timeworn cardboards seats. After a long, unpleasant, and long trip, I finally arrived to Havana,

The Count Of Monte Cristo Research Paper

...novel The Count of Monte Cristo, a juvenile French sailor spends (countless) years in prison due to the callous acts of jealous enemies who seem like his closest friends. Eventually, The Count manages a daring escape and begins plotting revenge on his enemies which changes him from the naive man he once was to a conniving spirit. Though fate certainly seems like a factor in these “coincidences,” The Count fabricates his own fate through trickery, deceit, and wit. Edmond Dantés returns a newly rich man and can easily gain the trust of his enemies because they do not recognize his new, metamorphisized character, thus he can pursue them without their knowledge of who he is. As his first alter ego, The Count becomes Abbe Busoni and he manipulates Caderousse for the information needed for connecting the dots after being in prison for so long. He states that “God may seem to forget sometimes; when his justice is inactive, but he always remembers sooner or later” (Dumas 110), whilst he begins plotting his revenge. Through gaining allies and information from his old...

V for Vendetta New Beginings

...In the movie V for Vendetta, ‘V’ is a man who escaped an unfair captivity by the government as an experimental study. He vows himself to revenge and kill those responsible. He also becomes a rebel leader, fighting a violent terrorist crusade against dictatorship in Britain, set in the future and ruled by Norsefire, a fascist political party in a totalitarian government. The woman Evey, a protagonist in the film, is victim of an attempted rape by the secret police, when she knowingly breaks the law by leaving her house after curfew. The policemen used their status to create fear by threatening her in order to be respected and obeyed. In the opening scene, Lewis Prothero a TV host, announces that their successful country works through ‘Strength and Unity’, which is why immigrants, Muslims, homosexuals, diseases and terrorists all had to go, based on a ‘better’ judgment of their government’s religion, which in this movie is some sort of Christianity. ‘Strength through Unity, Unity through Faith’. The movie shows how government can manipulate its people, from fear to hope, Chancellor Adam Sutler was elected after a bioterrorist attack occurred which killed many. A cure for the virus getting discovered shortly after his election shows it was a plot engineered by Norsefire to gain power. The film makes plenty of political points and affronts the American government of today by making certain references about the war on terrorism and quoting the film “People should not fear their government...

IF TOMORROW COMES by Sidney Sheldon, ©1985 BOOK ONE Chapter 01 New Orleans THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20--- 11:00 P.M. She undressed slowly, dreamily, and when she was naked, she selected a bright red negligee to wear so that the blood would not show. Doris Whitney looked around the bedroom for the last time to make certain that the pleasant room, grown dear over the past thirty years, was neat and tidy. She opened the drawer of the bedside table and carefully removed the gun. It was shiny black, and terrifyingly cold. She placed it next to the telephone and dialed her daughter's number in Philadelphia. She listened to the echo of the distant ringing. And then there was a soft "Hello?" "Tracy... I just felt like hearing the sound of your voice, darling." "What a nice surprise, Mother." "I hope I didn't wake you up." "No. I was reading. Just getting ready to go to sleep. Charles and I were going out for dinner, but the weather's too nasty. It's snowing hard here. What's it doing there?" Dear God, we're talking about the weather, Doris Whitney thought, when there's so much I want to tell her. And can't. "Mother? Are you there?" Doris Whitney stared out the window. "It's raining." And she thought, How melodramatically appropriate. Like an...

Ielts
