...No one is more professional than I. These are the opening words of the Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer, a charge to our enlisted ranks establishing expectations. The Creed is applicable to all Soldiers regardless of military specialty or role. They are words to live by, guiding our actions and our thinking. This Creed exemplifies what it means to be a member of the Profession of Arms. But what is a profession and where does a Human Resources Sergeant fit into one based on Arms? We can answer this question by examining what it means to be a profession, understanding the challenges and requirements that leaders face, and then emphasizing why Human Resources Sergeants are critical to the success of the Profession of Arms. When I...

...it Mean to be a Sergeant? A sergeant is given the responsibilities and trustworthiness to teach, mentor, and train the lower enlisted. Through the ranks of private to specialist, the title is given to you if you meet the “time in service” and “time in grade” requirements, and as long as you stay out of trouble, and you have done what has been asked of you. Unlike those ranks, sergeants have to prove themselves in front of his or her leadership. They have to prove to the board that they have what it takes to become a sergeant. It is commonly said that the reasons that the younger enlisted do what they do is because they are “privates” and that they don’t know better. When you achieve the rank of sergeant, that all goes out the window. Sergeants are expected to get things done without being told to do so; it’s called taking the initiative. We all would like for our soldiers to take the initiative to get things done, but for most of the time, it won’t get done unless he or she has been told to do so directly. As a sergeant, your section chief or platoon sergeant shouldn’t have to tell you what needs to be done all the time. You usually know what needs to happen for that day or week, and you should get it done without someone telling you to go do it, looking over your shoulder, and checking up on you. The Creed of the NCO says it; you are a leader of soldiers. Your primary duties are to train and take care of your soldiers’ needs. When someone outside of the military hears that...

...In February of 2007 my wife and I had the privilege of meeting Allen Lynch. We were doing some work at Fort Hood Texas and the hotel we were staying in was hosting a reunion of Vietnam era 1st Cavalry Division veterans. Allen, a quiet unassuming gentleman, was very interested in our work and he shared with us that he worked with various veterans groups in Illinois. After a pleasant conversation we called it a night. The next morning we went down for breakfast. Walking down the hall way we came upon Al. It became apparent quickly that hanging around Al’s neck there hung a Congressional Medal of Honor. Needless to say our conversation the evening before took on new meaning. Later we were able to spend a few more minutes with Al and he shared his story. Al enlisted in the Army in November of 1964. After basic training he ended up in Germany and later volunteered for Vietnam. Once in country Al was assigned to the 12th Cavalry in the Bong Son area of the Central Highlands in the fall of 1966. Initially, Al served as a rifleman and later became an RTO. In December of 1967 his company, after being in constant enemy contact for over a month, was scheduled to be moved to the rear for R & R. However, another company in their battalion was ambushed and Al’s unit was inserted during an air assault against a large force of North Vietnamese regulars on December 14th 1967. After several hours of heavy fighting Al saw three fellow Soldiers who were wounded and under intense enemy...

...framed from our own personal values. The customs, beliefs, and ideas we hold dear are our values. Ethics are the things we think of as right and wrong. A person who has high values and ethic should reconsider the job offer if they feel the corporation is dishonest Professional Values and Ethics Sexual Harassment “Professional values are the principles that guide your decisions and actions in your career.” According to Chrissy Scivicque, there are some universal values that should be and usually are held and practiced in all of them and they are: “first, do no harm; keep it simple; honesty is the best policy; we’re all in this together and stay balanced.” Professional ethics concerns the moral issues that arise because of the specialist knowledge that professionals attain, and how the use of this knowledge should be governed when providing a service to the public. Professional values and ethics are usually a standard in many corporations. As time changes professional values and ethics also change with new State and Federal Regulations applying to every corporation in America. ...ESSAY Slew My absence here for the past days, unlike the not a few times I went on a hiatus before, was not because of some complications I’ve gotten myself entangled into but because I found it more and more difficult to secure even a mere thirty minutes to reflect and write my thoughts down. My weekdays are jam-packed with responsibilities at work and my studies; my Saturdays, woefully, are barely spared. Fortunately, however, because of some levels of criminality in me that I have successfully kept in latency, in between breaks (or classes), I’d clandestinely let go of my unexpressed resentment, happiness, frustrations, ennui, and sadness on pieces of papers that I always keep. I think that by writing them down I am purging myself of excess emotions that do nothing but keep me from accomplishing my tasks, or violence that I would, in very rare cases, manifest, although not completely because I am a good citizen of the state. Silence, in addition to rest, has also become impossibly elusive; in fact, it is beginning to have that illicit feeling to it whenever I get hold of it in especially rare and fleeting cases, such as when I am sitting on a toilet bowl or when I am beginning to sleep and having REM. Either the metro drowns me in ceaseless, diaphanous noise, or I hear the monotonous sound of my voice, which can be very irritating at times, but quite often, as among narcissists of my kind, I’d find myself listening to its cadence, quality, and idiosyncrasy with furtive...

...Critique of ADA and Affirmative Action To critique the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and Affirmative Action, it is imperative that one knows that the Americans with Disabilities Act is a law and Affirmative Action is a policy. The Americans with Disability Act is a law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, public transportation, public accommodation, communication, and in governmental activities. Affirmative Action is a policy (regulation depends on the state) that is designed to provide equal opportunity (such as employment, education, and other endeavors) to groups that are discriminated and/or minorities (race/color, religion/beliefs/creed, gender, sexual orientation, and/or national origin). Within the ADA and Affirmative Action, there are pros and cons that exist. Pros of the American Disability Act The Americans with Disability Act has helped protect the civil rights of persons with disabilities. The passing of this law has helped many disabled individuals receive recompense for the discrimination that they faced. In 1997, Wal-Mart was found guilty of discrimination by refusing to hire an individual based on the fact that he was in a wheelchair. As part of its evidence, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission introduced a videotape showing the charging party performing many physically challenging activities during his daily life (EEOC, 2012). As a result, he was granted $225,000 which consisted of back pay, compensatory...

... Additionally, Conservatism was the political principles that influenced this life style. A modern society on the other hand refers to the principles and habits that administer our present world. On an economic scale the bottom to top approach is used, looking at the broader picture, attentively focusing on the citizens other than the leaders. Furthermore liberal governance is employed in this social sphere. Thus, this paper is to critically analyze and compare both traditional and modern organizations of society as ideologies. The objective of this paper is to link the purpose to the broader social, political and economic issues, focusing specifically on the family, role of government, technology and other relevant subjects. Social creeds have been drastically transformed by modernity. Traditionally the family was envisioned as a corporate group, as mentioned by Zinn “if one member of the family acts dishonourable . . . all members loses its honour in the eye of the community (pg. 107).” This is to illustrate that individuality did not exist; women and children were to act in a manner in which men designed, not maintaining particular roles such as secrecy can lead to the down fall of the family’s honour. However, family are highly dependent on prestige, part of maintaining this was to marriage into a family of higher...

...70 years ago racism and xenophobia were present in the development of migration policies. In 1958 immigration in search of “race harmony” set up the White Policy that consisted in restrict the entry of no-white people to the country. The government used to pay people from the UK and Europe to come over and live in Australia only with the condition of having light eyes and white skin. Post Second World War the immigration program has been altered in the attempt to get a better economy. After years of non-sense restrictions, the Whitlam government in 1972 ended a period of colour, race, ethnicity, country of birth, skills, gender and creed immigration controls. It leaded then to a low population rates forcing immigration laws to change. In 1996, in response to the new challenges of global political economy and the entrepreneurs’ pressure to have foreign skilled workers to meet new demands, the government introduced different kind of skilled visas, temporary and permanent. For 2014 the availability for overseas people whose ambition is moving into Australia is broken down into planning levels for each stream of the programme and visa category. The 2013-14 Migration Programme's 190 000 places...
