The Crucible And Harry Potter Comparison Essay

...The Crucible Vs Harry Potter In Arthur Millers The Crucible there are many similar things to Jk Rowling’s Harry Potter story. Really I think its many similar things because of both the writers they have similar interests and that one main thing is magic and witchcraft. Though both of the stories are from different times you have The Crucible basically written in the 1960s and then you have the Harry Potter story taking place in the 90s. That’s when Harry basically entered the whole magic school and basically learned out about a lot of things he didn’t know before. This is a big disadvantage for The Crucible story because it was taking place along time ago though both the stories are still similar. The main similar things you would notice...

The Crucible Movie And Book Comparison Essay

...A person’s immediate response when wronged is to make the scales even and in someway make that person feel the pain they felt. Although you can see this theme manifest throughout most plays, movies, and books, you can particularly see throughout The Crucible by Andrew Miller and Goodnight and Goodluck written by George Clooney. The The Crucible, a play, and Goodnight and Goodluck, a movie both dramatize times in history when, in the case of the play, a real witch hunt occurs, and in the Movie a metaphorical witch hunt takes place. In both the play and the movie, you see people's actions are often motivated by a desire for revenge. In The Crucible, there is a woman named Ann Putnam. She has had seven babies and only one of them has lived. This would obviously make any mother...

The Crucible Movie And Play Comparison Essay

...Authors and playwrights write their works intending for the audience to acknowledge a problem in their society. For example, Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to express the conditions the United States is in. Fear quickly spread throughout the country due to citizens accusing each other of being a communist. Similar to the Red Scare, the citizens of Salem began accusing each other of witchcraft due to their own fears. On the other, Jodi Picoult’s purpose of Salem Falls is to entertain the audience. Picoult adjusts the story to adapt to the twenty-first century. Unlike the ending of Miller’s play, the film had a true ending. In both versions, the audience learns that religion corrupts the justice system; nevertheless, the film’s ending exemplifies that a society can overcome such conflict. Religious beliefs may be the cause of biased outcomes in the justice system. For instance, John Proctor, the main protagonist in Miller’s play, argues with Hale, “And why not, if they must hang for denyin’ it? There are them that will swear to anything before they’ll hang; have you never...

The Crucible

...The Crucible This essay will discuss, explain and evaluate the main ideas, themes and interpretations of Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible. It will also explain and evaluate the language Arthur Miller uses and how it contributed to the overall success of the play. The Crucible is set in 1692 in the puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts, a theocratic society, where the laws of the land are laid down by the church. The main idea running throughout the play can be viewed as a direct comparison to McCarthyism which was happening in 1950’s America, in which members of the general public including public figures such as Arthur Miller were brought in and questioned over connections to communism. This can be seen as a direct comparison to people being brought into the Salem courts regarding connections with witchcraft. It was not until Miller saw this comparison that he then felt compelled to write The Crucible as he now felt he could get into the minds of those going through similar circumstances back in the Salem witch trials. Hysteria was the main cause of nineteen deaths in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, and countless ruined reputations on account of Joe McCarthy. Hysteria does not just appear out of nowhere though. There are driving forces such as revenge and abuse of power that bring about the irrational fear that can take over society. These are the issues expressed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The Crucible is paralleled directly to the Salem Witch Trials and indirectly...

...Crucible paper Throughout time and history man has always fear what differs from itself. Whether it be skin color, sexual orientation or religious beliefs; we’ve hunted that which is different from us. In today’s day we’d like to think we have grown pass these urges, but unfortunately we almost certainly do the same thing we did during the Salem witch trials in the 1600’s just minus the hangings (sometimes), and that’s what I’ll be discussing today by comparing events from the past 150 years to the crucible. But before we start here’s a quick over view of the crucible. The crucible is a play about a group of women who were practicing witch craft which is punishable by hanging because it is a sin. The got caught and to cover their tracks they lie on towns people they dislike claiming they are witches. The only way for the town’s people to avoid death is to lie which is also a sin, so they basically get charged with a sin and gave to sin for their life which challenges their beliefs. So to truly start this paper I would like to talk about the trials of the African American people. The African American people have been hunted since we gained are freedom in the 1860’s. As soon as we got are freedom the Caucasian people refused us basic living rights because we were different. If you were black and caught by the racist they lynched you, Lynching is when a person is hung from an object and for an alleged event, kind of like in the crucible they were different so they hung. Caucasian’s...

Crucible Theme

...” (Miller 1962) is a common theme throughout the works of the famous playwright, Arthur Miller. Respect and reputation is a widely dispersed theme throughout The Crucible. Its many different occurrences that are displayed from start to finish of this play, make this specific theme one of the most important. In The Crucible, the idea of one’s reputation and their social standings swayed the thoughts and actions of many individuals. When the witchcraft accusation was brought about in Salem, “it was the ideas of reputation that determined whether or not the accused individuals were actually guilty of the crime.” (Shoop Editorial Team). One of the occasions that the theme of reputation took place was in the very beginning of the play. In act 1, when Reverend Parris caught his daughter Betty and his niece Abigail dancing in the woods, he was worried about what the other people in the town were going to think. He was anxious to discover what the people of Salem were going to say about him when they discovered that his daughter and niece might have possibly been performing acts of witchcraft. This is proven when he said, “Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time. But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it.”(The Crucible. Act 1. Scene 1.) Parris was also worried that the people who already disliked him were going to ruin his name further. His thoughts of action were to control the...

Comparing Judgment In The Crucible And The Scarlet Letter

...Individuals, subject to human frailty and motivation, exhibit inconsistencies among the greater collective human experience. In turn, preconceived notions of the audience are challenged by the exposition of humanity’s complexity to invoke personal assessment and reflection. As such, it is presented within Arthur Miller’s tragedy, “The Crucible”, and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s romantic fiction, “The Scarlet Letter”. Both works explore the contradictions of judgement and consider the inconsistencies of personal integrity, encapsulated under the guise of Puritanism within New England America, political agenda, and historical calamity. Therefore, audiences foster introspection and reflection by developing nuance surrounding the inconsistencies of human...

Ash content in food is determined by burning the food to calculate the ash percentage left behind. A deficiency in any of the minerals within ash would result in a wide range of health problems which is why it is a legal requirement to display the ash content on food packaging. This experiment is designed to recreate the process undergone by the pet food company to determine the ash content within the food. Method Weigh silica crucible and record weight prior to experiment. Grind over 5g of food sample in pestle and mortar and measure 5g of ground sample into the crucible. (W0) Place the dish in a baking oven for 24hrs to dry out the sample.
