In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible it tells the tale of a troubled, proud, and arrogant man by the name of John Procter. John Proctor does something that was wrong with a woman that was not his wife. When his wife finds out, she sends out the woman that he did lechery with out of her house and sent her to the girl's uncle's house. The young female who was sent out was named Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams uncle happened to be the Reverend in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. When Abigail Williams starts to threaten the life of his wife Elizabeth, he becomes very angry but tries to fix it in any way that he can. John Proctor, possesses all the attributes of a tragic hero. Without committing lechery with her, the Salem Witch trials may not have happened and he would not of had to die. His wife would not have been arrested and accused of witchcraft and he would have still been alive with his newborn child. Before he was hung, he had the opportunity to not die if he confessed to have signed the devil’s book. He was going to sign but then when the judges wanted to put his confession on the church. He decided that he would rather have his name than to be accused as a coward and a sinner in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. John Proctor is a perfect example of a tragic hero. He did something that was dreadful to his family. But in the end, he became the hero that most people dreamed to be. At the end of the play, his wife Elizabeth, while watching John Proctor on his way to the scaffold, was told that she needed to go convince him to sign the confession. She said something that was very hard hitting. She said that he finally got his good and she did not want to take that away from
