Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all other social media websites have made life quite easy for people to network all around the world. These sites make their users eager to know what their friends, family members, or even strangers are doing. However, is this eagerness really worth jeopardizing your privacy? This technological advancement has allowed people to interact and have knowledge of what is going on around the world for the price of having no privacy. Once someone posts something online, it never gets completely deleted. As technology is becoming more consistently used, the chance of privacy invasion increases tremendously. This happens because people don’t pay attention to how much the rapid growth in technology affects them poorly. The government has the power to all the advanced technology and all the resources needed to invade privacy of the citizens; however, does the government really use their power in a positive way? Peter Singer provides an example from the past in which the government misused their power. Two police officers assaulted a black man named Rodney King. Another man named George Holliday videotaped the injustice and helped Rodney King acquit himself. The government has the propensity to misuse its power in areas that aren’t needed. “The crucial step in preventing a repressive government from misusing information is to have alert and well-informed citizens with a strong sense of right and wrong who work to keep the government democratic, open, just and under the rule of law” (Singer 465).
