The Darkest Day Time is one thing man has absolutely no control over. All we can do as human beings is simply make the most out of every moment we are given. Some utilize that time, and others waste it by wallowing in entertainment. I happen to be the latter of the two. I would consider myself an avid gamer, I have ample followers on Twitter, and I have more friends on Facebook than in real life. I couldn’t live without Netflix, I practically live in my home theatre, and I am currently learning C++. I want to mention that I did a full blackout as in I practically turned off the power in my room. My life is so entangled with electronics that this blackout felt like prison. Well the food was better, and I wasn’t afraid to drop the soap, but you get the point. It felt as if a part of me had died. I couldn’t even play Dishonored! I hate that I was given this mission just as I was gaining ground in a game I just started but not being able to play one game was terrible enough, not even turning on any of my consoles (which consist of my Xbox One, Xbox 360, Ps3, Ps2, PSvita, & PC) was torture. Being an avid gamer and all, I feel I spend a large portion of my time playing video games. Not being able to access them when they were right in front of me felt like kicking heroin with the supplier next door. It was honestly a horrific experience and I deserve a medal for staying true to the mission and restraining myself from divulging in my addiction. I
Jackson 2 felt like I was on punishment but I didn’t know what I did. But even though my passion for video games was put on hold, nothing could compare to the day of silence I endured without my music to soothe me and make my day easier. The absence of music was excruciatingly painful. It felt like the world was empty and there was no sound seeing as though I always have my phone and headphones on person. Also, 80% of the time you will see me with my headphones listening to music. Not having it was like losing a family member. Music is such a big part of my life because its practically laced into every task I complete. Actually I’m listening to music right now making this assignment 1000 times more bearable. I also play instruments so I brought entertainment to my life through that, but all of my sheet music was on my laptop so I could only play what my muscles remembered which was difficult. I literally stared at my phone on the floor in the middle of my room from the fetal position in the corner. This experiment showed my how much I depend on entertainment. One of my obsessions as I now consider my actions as consisted of communicating to my friends, and family through various ways. I talk on the phone, I tweet regularly, I text multiple people throughout the day, & I have even held up to 10 conversations at once through facebook so you can tell I talk enough for half the population in Arizona. Not being able to vent my emotions through Twitter, or talk to my friends and my close friends was hard, but what was harder was not being able to facetime my family in michigan. Since I am originally from Detroit, all of my family resides in Michigan over 2000 miles away. Funny enough we just so happened to have difficulties with our landline that day so it was kinda disappointing knowing I couldn’t
Jackson 3 talk to my family so far away. As for the people in Arizona, oddly enough I felt relief not talking to anyone. It was kinda relaxing not having to pick up my phone in that sense and respond to someone every five seconds. There were a few people I wanted to talk to badly enough to abort the mission, but I kept it under control and restrained myself. One more thing that was extremely irritating due to this blackout was the fact that my other online pastimes such as Netflix, Reddit, and 9gag had to stop abruptly. Even the part of me that likes to educate himself throughout the day on things that intrigues him had to stop which actually made me write down things I thought about and couldn’t look up the meaning or search the facts on it. For instance I was wondering what types of languages are required to write a program on the android or apple market. These are things that are extremely simple in this day and age but back then that would be more taxing and time consuming.
Thinking about how dependent I am on the internet was one thing but the thought of how hard it would be to look up that single question in a library it would take me leaving to the library, getting a library card, checking out a book, and flipping through countless pages for the answer. Today I can look up any question I have for free, in the confort of my home or on the go while out and about, and have various sources for facts. informations, and all this is mine at the touch of a button at lightning speeds.
Not spending my time doing something I found entertaining gave me time to spend time with my family and do some of the things they enjoy that don’t involve electronics. I spend a lot of time with my family since all 5 of us work or stay at home all day so no one is
Jackson 4 neglected when I do what I want, but it was so much we did that had nothing to do with electronics. We sat around and played board games, we played basketball in the driveway, we did a lot of stuff together. Something that connects you to the world can easily disconnect you from your everyday life by taking away your attention from other things daily.

...Hong Kong Page.1 The Canadian experience in Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945 remains as one of the darkest chapters in Canadian military history. It also remains one of the most remembered years for Canadians in WW2. The Canadians experience in Hong Kong is one of the most darkest and most remembered years for Canadians because of the irresponsibility of the Canadian government for blankly listening to the British. Canada sent almost 2,000 troops to Hong Kong in an impossible situation. Most of the soldiers were not properly trained and many weren't properly equipped for battle. To make it worse the soldiers were terribly organized with any enemy strategy working on them. The Canadian government knew all that and yet still sent their soldiers into Hong Kong without asking any questions or even giving it much thought. When the Canadians were ordered to defend a place that cannot be defended, they were expecting about 5,000 enemy Japanese soldiers instead their were 10 times as much with 50,000 Japanese soldiers. A defense that was suppose to last a few weeks ended in a few days. When the Canada heard about this, they sent no reinforcements. The Canadians also underestimated the Japanese thinking they were inferior fighters, can't see at night, and they were afraid of the water. The Canadians couldn't be more wrong as they were easily defeated. Japan started a few day bombing on Hong Kong eventually taking over Hong Kong. When Canada sent their soldiers on an impossible mission...

Essay Robert Frost Snowy Evening

...undercurrent, similar to the surface of a frozen river. Its what's under the ice that is more interesting. Our main character, tells us in the first stanza that he has paused a moment (line 3). He has paused to take in a peaceful scene. The visual imagery of the woods filling "up with snow" (line 4) is rich. The snow is falling fast enough that it seems to be filling as he watches. How long does he pause? That depends on how fast the snow is falling. Long enough to see the "woods fill up" is what he says. The second stanza tells us that he has paused long enough that he's contemplating his horse's thoughts wondering what he thinks of standing there between the woods he is describing and a frozen lake (line 7) on an very dark evening. The darkest. (line 8) The third stanza makes us listen and asks the question, "Are we really supposed to be here?" (Line 10) We hear the horse shaking or tossing his head and correspondingly the harness bells jingle (line 9) and fade into the sound of a light wind and tiny pats of snowflakes landing. (Line 12) The fourth stanza tells us that the woods are "lovely dark and deep" (line 13) and gives us the idea that while he is enjoying his respite, he is tired and has a long way to go. (Lines 15 and 16) The poems slow tempo and soft rimes contribute to a feeling of melancholy as we watch him resume his journey. It is with a second reading that questions appear. The literal imagery is solid yet many questions could be...

Angels

...Angels Among Us Melissa Sheeley ENG 125 Andrea Moak March 21, 2011 As the song from the band Alabama goes, “I believe there are angels among us, sent down to us from somewhere up above, they come to you and me in our darkest hours to show us how to live, to teach us how to give, to guide us with the light of love (Lyrics Mode, 2011).” I think the poem Grief Calls Us to the Things of this World (Clugston, 2010) written by Sherman Alexie has a lot in common with Alabama’s song I Believe There are Angels Among Us. The paper you are about to read is going to describe how they relate to each other and analyze the poem as to whether after someone passes if they are still around us. The song sung by Alabama tells of a boy walking home and gets lost in the dark in the woods as he takes a short cut home. A man takes him by the hand and helps him home safely. The boy’s mom does not see the man standing next to her son as he stands on the front steps holding hands with her son. The boy figures an angel has come down from Heaven and helped him get home safely. The song goes on to say how even in our darkest hours there is someone there telling us it is going to be okay and will get us through. The theme of the poem written by Sherman Alexie is that of a reminder of his dad not being around anymore physically but spiritually, he writes of a man going to a hotel room and finding a phone next to the toilet in the bathroom....

How To Write A Madsen Journal

The darkest of days in my life when my wife told me to leave our house in front of our children will forever be ingrained in my memory. At the time of course I thought, why would God put me through this and my kids through this? I couldn’t make sense of any of it. My head was spinning and I felt like I was dying. After a month of self-abuse of alcohol to try and numb the pain and not having a place to stay, I emerged in the most unlikely of places. My car ended up miles away from where I was drinking at. I had no idea of how I even got to where I was at. When I finally came out of whatever state I was in, I realized...

With his wife, Catherine, he "reached for the worst," rather than cultivate the comfortable middle class. In 1878, by a fortunate inspiration, the name was changed from the "Christian Mission," to "The Salvation Army." Immediately, the movement captured the public imagination. Incorporating paramilitary ranks and uniforms, the movement spread throughout the British Isles. Abraham Lincoln's Assassination Justified Analysis

...Many see american presidents and immediately think about Abraham Lincoln. This is completely justified considering his outstanding achievements. To start, Abraham prevented the country from falling apart. He did this by deciding to fight the south when they misconceived his notion that he would tolerate slavery only in the states that already had it. During this war is where we see Abraham truly strive as a great leader. His faith in the fairness of his pro-Union policies kept the Union alive during the darkest days of the Civil War. He was a charismatic, persuasive, moral leader who had a strategic vision of his goal, which was to bring the nation together as one again. Abraham Lincoln's foreign policy was successful in preventing other...

Beauty, Life, Death

...Beauty, Life and Death Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on A Snowy Evening” is a simple and literal poem that has been interpreted and emphasized in many different ways. Frost tells a simple story that manages to get any reader to think about its scene and how profound this story can actually be. Many different opinions have been expressed as to what the poet was trying to convey in these lines; happiness, life, or maybe even death. The poem was written during the early 20th century, around the 1920s. According to an analysis done on this poem: “...Frost wrote the poem on a hot summer day...” (Gualdoni 2). Quite an interesting piece of information that questions why Frost would use a season opposite to the one he was currently writing through. The poem itself is written in iambic tetrameter so that 4 lines are grouped together in each stanza. There is a visible rhyme scheme and figures of speech that coexist within the piece. The first two lines in a stanza rhyme with each other while the third line stands to temporarily disrupt the balance, only to be followed by a fourth line with a rhyme that will match the previous two. A broad sense of imagery invites the reader to his/her imagination and calmly surrounds them in that cold winter night. In the woods with just his horse, the snow and a frozen lake, is a simple setting the poet used for this piece. The first few lines display a character that is in the middle of nowhere and mentions of an unknown person that the “woods”...

...ugly in 1999 singers are all models that sing. In 1993 I was 15 years old. I was a teenager in the down of my adult life and when I listen to this song on the radio I always wondered what that emotion so private that they sang was. Private Emotion: The song is from the Hooters and the lyrics are as follows: Every endless night has a dawning day Every darkest sky has a shining ray And it shines on you, baby, can't you see You're the only one who can shine for me It's a private emotion That fills you tonight And a silence falls between us As the shadows steal the light and wherever you may find it Wherever it may lead Let your private emotion come to me Come to me, come to me, come to me When your soul is tired and your heart is weak Do you think of love as a one way street? Well, it runs both ways, open up your eyes Can't you see me here, how can you deny It's a private emotion That fills you tonight And a silence falls between us As the shadows steal the light And wherever you may find it Wherever it may lead Let your private emotion come to me Come to me, come to me Every endless night has a dawning day Every darkest sky has a shining ray It takes a lot to laugh as your tears go by But you can find me here till your tears run dry Well, it's a private emotion That fills you tonight And a silence falls between us As the...

Why College Education Is Important to Me

...Jennifer Castillo EN110 January 5th, 2016 Why College Education is Important to Me I sometimes feel as though I am resting on the side of a mountain, breathing the crisp air, finally able to experience peace and blissful contentment. Reaching this point was necessarily difficult; full of setbacks, disappointments, reevaluations, fickleness, and uncertainty. I’ve never been one to excel at a trade, and my confidence is not at the level necessary to begin an alternative venture. So…college is a no-brainer, especially given the fact that I’ve wanted to help others in the area of mental health since I was a freshman in high school. Having lived through the darkest of days has further fueled my passion. A college education is important to me because it lays the groundwork in my mission. Completion is the ultimate victory…and who wouldn’t want that? I experienced symptoms depression and social anxiety for as long as I could remember. I was never really social or outgoing, preferring to spend my afternoons in my room writing stories or sketching random creations. As I grew, I soon realized I wasn’t just “shy” or “quiet” ...my reaction to interaction was pretty irrational. “Socially anxious children tend to become isolated as they are unable to develop a normal network of friends. Often a socially anxious child will have one or two close friends and rely on them for all social interactions. But families relocate, kids change schools, and interests diverge, and it may become...

Break Of Day Analysis

...Break of Day was written by Australian author, Tony Palmer. This non-fictional book talks about Murray, a young boy who goes to war after his brother, Will, in order to find more bravery, and discover about his Uncle Jack who ran away during his time in World War 1. It’s written in Murray’s perspective and visits many flashbacks from before he came to war, about his old life back home. Palmer conveys many messages about family, bravery and death. Addressing the impact these subjects can have on someone’s life. Family can change someone’s life easily, by maybe growing up in with violent parents, you’ll grow up thinking violence is key. Murray has many changes throughout the book, the biggest being bravery. Unlike his brother who becomes more cowardly. Having someone...

Time in the Sound and the Fury

...* The Impact of Time on the Theme and Characters of the Sound and the Fury * The Interpretation of Time Lapses and the Influence It Has on the Narration in Benjamin’s Section Benjamin is 33 years old at April 7th, 1928. He is a child with a mask of adolescence and what he perceives from the world around him is totally different from normal people, because let’s say he has a gift that no normal person can have, he is an idiot. Our intentions aren’t about supporting the community of mentally handicapped people here by saying he has a gift, but to know a person, just like knowing animals, you have to get inside their heads. So we definitely don’t want to have negative badges on ourselves. Reading this section is specifically hard because we have to think like an idiot, and to achieve this matter we have to reinforce our sensory stimuli. Benjamin has no concept of time or place, he does as he pleased, and in order to extract his thoughts you should find the love of his life, who is obviously Caddy (Candace). Every single smell, place or sound can evoke his feelings toward Caddy, meaning that for example noticing a swing in the present can bring him back to the past and even thinking about the past can bring him to deeper levels of his past; or when Dilsey called Miss Quentin for the meal, he immediately remember the time with Quentin (his brother) who is in this specific part, the stimuli for his reminiscent. Although most of his memories are about Candace, he has other flashbacks...

...many challenges. Some of them make us who we are while some tell us what we should be. Sometimes it is the opposite. There will be struggle, there will be bad days. Days which would never seem to end. Days which would go on and on, which would keep hurting us till the end. Many of us actually most would give up but the people who wont will be the ones to face the brighter side of the day. The night is darkest before dawn but how can we forget the rainbow after the rain? We understand to love, to give, to endure, to find pleasure, to please but what we do not understand is ourselves during all of this. Life can lie to us and no one will stop it, it can play all sorts of games with us without us even knowing because there is no one controlling it. But whatever happens in life happens for good. Good of all in it. Whatever decisions life takes for us is already planned by it and we must learn to accept it. We must come in terms with the fact that no matter how hard we try to fit in this imperfect world, it will never acknowledge us for who we are. We always feel like becoming everything else around us. But what we do not realize is that everyone wants to be happy in the end of the day. They just want to find someone who will love them and who will stand by them throughout. Throughout the stormy nights, throughout the lonely days, throughout all the cold...
