...Ushas; Goddess of Dawn The Hindu religion is very complex with all of their Gods and Goddess; as well as with its large terms for different things and their practices. The Hindu religion is the oldest religion in India; but recognizes that other religions are equally as suitable. When people look for what gods they wish to write a paper on or just look more into; many pick the main Gods, such as Dyaus Pitr (shining father) and Aditi (mother of the gods). My goal was to look for a god that intrigued me and made me more curious about the religion and the part he or she has in it. That being I chose one the “few goddess and one of the important” gods of the Vedic Pantheon, Ushas; Goddess of Dawn. Ushas is said to be the daughter of the sky and sister of the night. It is said that each morning, this beautiful maiden (Ushas) appears, riding in a chariot pulled by cows. The sun, is said to have been struck by her beauty, and falls madly in love with her as he chases her across the sky. As she passes, she spreads her love and light across the sky; bringing in a new day for mankind. As she passes above the birds they start to sing in praise. She drives off the dark and creatures of the night and prepares us for the light filled day we have ahead. She does this every morning, tirelessly bringing light and life to mankind. According to the myths Ushas is portrayed as an shy woman that is conscious of her beauty, but is still extremely modest There are multiple hymns that are dedicated...

...Disoriented Faith It is psychologically natural for humans to question faith and spirituality after experiencing tragedy and loss. People may doubt or even reject their faith with God whom is depicted in scripture as a source of peace and security in our lives. In Elie Wiesel’s Dawn, Elisha faces a similar spiritual contradiction after barely surviving the holocaust. After all of his family and friends are murdered by the egregious acts of the Nazi’s, Elisha seems to immediately question the logic behind his faith in Judaism and God. Stemming from his upbringing as an Orthodox Jew, his faith does not merely go away, rather, his understanding of God is reinterpreted into a more extreme outlook that acts as his catalyst for change as he transforms into a terrorist. Elisha’s reshaped understanding of God first becomes evident when he is relocated in refuge programs in France. In a camp outside of Normandy, Elisha often spends his time alone, in part because he does not speak French, but he interestingly reveals some important information regarding his faith. For the first time, we see that Elisha is pondering his faith as he looks up at the sky searching for God. Cliché in nature, it is almost as if he is saying “Why, God?” as he searches for the face of a child in the sky, trying to his rationalize experience in the concentration camp. When pressed to discuss this when Catherine, another girl whom he lustfully bonds with after discovering that she also speaks German, Elisha...

...Daybreak and The Gay Science Nietzsche, in both Daybreak and The Gay Science, seems to be interested in the examination of society. Society is a very vague notion; in an attempt to define, or at least reduce the area of examination, I will make the claim Nietzsche is particularly interested in the evolution of morals, customs and cultures, and the “purpose” of advancing and preserving the human race. Even more specifically, Nietzsche is examining the way in which the evolution of these different concepts has unintentionally affected the progression of the human race as a whole. Nietzsche accuses religion, Christianity in particular, of creating a sense of pride in suffering. “Cruelty is one of the oldest festive joys of mankind. Consequently it is imagined that the gods to are refreshed and in festive mood when they are offered the spectacle of cruelty – and thus there creeps into the world the idea that voluntary suffering, self-chosen torture, is meaningful and valuable.”[1] The story of Job from the Bible is a great example of how religion has helped to ingrain this notion in the human experience. This idea that suffering, and voluntary suffering at that, is a necessary part of the moral human experience is sick. Nietzsche goes onto state that once this sort of notion or custom, any custom for that matter, is accepted and followed by members of a society it tends to be passed on to the next generation; this new generation typically accepts the custom without questioning...

...Birth in the Dawn When the earth first became hot and the heavens churned and the sun was dark, land emerged from the slime of the sea. The deepest darkness of caverns, a male, and the moonless darkness of night, a female, gave birth to the simple life forms of the sea. The coral that builds islands was born, and the grub, the sea cucumber, the sea urchin, the barnacle, the mussel, the limpet, and cowry, and the conch and other shellfish. Born was the seagrass, guarded by the tough landgrass on land; born was the Manauea moss of the sea, matched by the Manauea taro plant on land; born was the Kele seaweed, and the Ekele plant of the land. Next the deep darkness of the deep sea and darkness broken by slivers of light in the moonlit forest gave birth to the fish of the sea. The porpoise was born, and the shark, and the goatfish, and the eel, and the octopus, and the stingray, and the bonito, and the albacore, and the mackerel and mullet, and the sturgeon. Born was the Kauila eel of the sea, matched by the Kauila tree on land; born was the Kupoupou fish of the sea, and the Kou tree on land; born was the A'awa fish of the sea, guarded by the 'Awa plant of the land. Trains of walruses and schools of fish swam past the coral ridges, still in the darkness of night. Next darkness of night and night that just barely breaks into dawn gave birth to the flying creatures. The caterpillar was born, and the moth to which it leads; the ant was born, and the dragonfly that...

...“When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth (Romero, 1978). From shuffling corpses to gallons of fake blood, the 1978 "Dawn of the Dead" and its 2004 counterpart, demonstrate the vast difference in horror films of today and those of the 1970's. While the original was a catalyst for a paradigm shift in the world of horror cinema, the 2004 remake is a bold reminder of how far the genre has come. While sharing a title and an overall basic plotline, the similarities stop there. Separated by more than two decades, these two films are a prime example of the speed at which technology and society are advancing. If horror films have said anything about society, it is that society’s fascination with violence and gore transcends generations. When George Romero released his sequel to his classic “Night of the Living Dead” in 1978, it was considered extremely graphic and horrifying to audiences, to the point of controversy (Triggs, 2006-2012). Today, the original film does not have the same effect on viewers and is thought of as campy and almost funny. The 2004 film shows that as time moves on, the same techniques used in the original will no longer captivate the imaginations of audiences. With the rapid advancement of technology and how readily available it is, movie-goers expect more from films. Movies as a whole have become extremely violent and graphic. This shows a change in what society considers acceptable entertainment. The horror genre as a whole has shifted...

...Twilight People that are compose of students, high educated, house wife, read the book s and novels first, and then go out to see the movies just to be able to put an image on what they had already imagine by reading the book. I personally have not read any of these books or novels in relation to the twilight saga, and not even watch any of the movies. However, curiosity has taken over me because I see so much propaganda about this new movie the Breaking Dawn that I have decided that in order to be able to see this movie that many are talking about I needed to get familiar with the whole drama from the beginning. That’s how I get to Twilight the very first movie, one of the reason why I didn’t have interest of the movie was because being a fictions movie, the setting is not that appealing well I guess we are talking about vampire and they can’t be in the light, so I guess it is not appealing to me watching movie with dark backgrounds, I guess living in Washington state is not either a place to be if you are a happy outgoing person they said if you want to be depress move to the west coast. The movie takes place in a small town called Forks in the state of Washington which claim to have populations of 3,120. The town seems to be very heartwarming where everyone knows each other and good things are the only thing that happens. Bella which is the star of the movies decides to move there with her dad whom happen to be the chief of police in the town she starts attending school...

These design elements punctuate and underscore the movement of figures within the frame, including the following: setting, lighting, costuming, makeup, and hairstyles. Choose a scene from movieclips.com. In a three to five page paper, (excluding the cover and reference pages) analyze the miser-en-scène. Used this type of lighting because of the significant effects it would present in the scene (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). When the movie starts, Aro the leader of the Volturi is fascinated when he sees Bella is immune to all the vampire’s amazing powers the lighting looks hazy with smoky appearance. The lighting defines Aro making him stand out more; his eyes were noticeable blood shoot red while the appearance of Marcus and Caius were a bit blurred. I thought the lighting of the scene evokes fear, worry, and death of Bella and Edward. The use of back lighting made the focus on Belle clearer which gives me the impression that the director wanted to show the dissimilar of dead and living highlights to detail features of Bella’s rosy cheekbone. By using low-key lighting, this allows the film to have huge amounts of shadow which...

...Name: Professor: Course: Date: The Dawn Appears with Butterflies Joy Harjo’s poem “The Dawn Appears with Butterflies” describes death and dying, familial relationships and spirituality. It is a story told in first person, of a young husband who has died suddenly, leaving his wife “to the grace (that) we pursue as wild horses (pursue) the wind,” (lines 17,18) and the young widow has to leave before dawn to prepare her late husband’s body for burial. It is the widow’s friend, who tells this story in prose, surmising that life is the “gradual return to the maker of the butterflies” (line 29). It is a story of grievance and preparation for burial that comes off as humorous as well as deeply unreasonable and confusing. The speaker and the young widow spend the night before the funeral, waiting for dawn and the depth of the widow’s loss is counterbalanced – “your tears made a pale butterfly, the color of dawn” (line 25)- by the depth of connection with the universe and the acceptance of the inescapability of death to us all. It is Harjo’s use of the butterflies-at-dawn imagery that infuses joy and triumph over the darkness in the incessant continuum of dawn versus darkness, and brings about thoughts on the nature of grief and the part that spirituality plays in the grieving process. In this poem, Harjo uses several elements. She uses metaphors in some instances “Your grief is the dark outlining the stars” (lines 18, 19), “Everything is a prayer for this journey” (line 58), and...

...Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set in San Francisco, ten years after the simian flu has wiped out most of the humans on Earth. A group of “genetically enhanced” apes encounters a group of human survivors looking for a new source of energy from the nearby dam. Their leader, Caesar, struggles to find a balance between protecting his people and re-establishing a relationship with humanity, the latter of which is his own personal goal. The movie has some great acting, accompanied with strong special effects, and comments on issues of species supremacy and distrust between groups. Warning - spoilers to follow. With a cast including Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman, it’s hard for the acting to go south. Clarke and Russell play Malcolm...

...Plot 1923 Twilight is a classic love story, but the author has written it in an interesting twist between love and fantasy. I wouldn’t say that the story is original but the way the author, Stephanie Meyer explains things in it makes it special. If I’d put this book in a shelf at the library I wouldn’t really be able to decide where it should be, if it should be in the shelf of fantasy books or in the shelf in the category of love stories. Personally I’m not a big fan of fantasy books but I Twilight has got “the best of both worlds” without that’s getting out of hand. These books in the series are all written from Bella’s perspective except some parts where you can read it from Jacob’s, which I think that it makes it extra interesting. Setting The book takes place in Forks what is a small town in Washington, United States and when you read the book you’ll understand it. In Forks the population is just over 3000. It’s often raining and barely sunshine, even in summer time. The author Stephanie Meyer describes it well in the book and there’s also a reason why the books takes place there. In the book they say that vampires can’t be shown in sunshine without people would understand they’re different, because when they do their skin gets shiny, just as sparkling glitter. Characters In this book there are three main characters, Bella, Edward and Jacob. Bella is an ordinary teenage girl how falls in unconditionally in love with the boy in her school, Edward who is a vampire...

...NEW MOON New Moon is the second book that integrates part of the Twilight Saga written by Stephenie Meyer. Definitely a book that can steal more than a tear. The story is well known for the films that have come out, but definitely the book is a totally different experience. It all begins with Bella's 18th birthday, the protagonist. Its not a very good day for her because she ages older than Edward, her boyfriend. Although Bella does not want celebrate her birthday, Edward and his sister Alice, which become friends in Twilight, the first book in the series, manage to convince her to go to the Cullen house. Bella's birthday ends in a disaster when Bella cuts her finger opening a gift. This bleeding makes Jasper uncontrollable and attacks her, however he doesn’t get close enough to bit her. Edward gets to the conclusion that Bella would be better off without him, so he leaves a dramatic message saying: ITWILL AS IF I'D NEVER EXISTED. Bella goes into an intense depression that last a few months where she does not want to spend time with anyone, she just thinks about Edward 24 hours a day. During those months she resigns and begins to approach Jacob, feeling a little comfort to her pain. With him she did very dangerous things, but everything had a reason, she so masochistic that every time she risked her life she would hear the voice of her beloved Edward. Jacob was about to become the Bella's best friend when he started to ignore her calls. Unable to understand...
