...The poems are written by Lowell and Longfellow after they both have tragically lost a loved one. The theme of these poems are grief, death, and loss. Grief is shown in “The First Snowfall” when Lowell states “Flake by flake, healing and hiding/The scar of our deep-plunged woe.” (Lowell 31-32) Lowell is dealing with the death of his daughter and is still deeply scarred by her death, as he will be forever. Longfellow is dealing with the tragic death of his wife. In “The Cross of Snow,” grief is shown when Longfellow says “In the long, sleepless watches of the night,/ A gentle face--the face of one long dead--/Looks at me from the wall, where round its head/ The night-lamp casts a halo of pale light./ Here in this room she died, and soul more white.” (Longfellow 1-5) Longfellow is kept awake with the never-ending feeling of grief and the thought of his wife’s death. He will always remember where she died, and his soul will never be at rest. Lowell and Longfellow use the nature of snow as having healing powers. At the ends of both poems the snow symbolizes eternal love. “The First Snowfall” uses the first snowfall of the season and “The Cross of Snow” uses snow that has settled deep in the ravines in the sides of a mountain. The snow forms a natural cross in the snow that can be seen from afar when the sun shines upon the mountain a certain...

...Poverty, Love, and Each Other “The Gift of the Magi” remains one of the most recognizable and frequently read stories in American literature. During its time the tale was extremely popular. Today the story is considered juvenilia and has not garnered much serious critical attention. “The Gift of the Magi” initially appeared in one of O. Henry's best-known collection of stories, The Four Million, which was published in the late 1906. This story’s plot has two main characters on Christmas Eve. A young married woman named Della has cut and sold her long beautiful hair in order to gain enough money to purchase her husband a Christmas present. The present that she wants for her husband is a platinum chain for his pocket watch. However when her husband Jim returns he is stunned to see that she has cut her hair. He is in turn has sold his pocket watch to purchase her a pair of tortoise-shell combs for her long hair. The author throughout this story is trying to explain to us the feeling of mutual respect people have for one another as well as the love that these two people feel for one another even though they are poverty stricken . As the author tells the story he is sure to describe the mutual feeling, love and respect that Jim and Della have for one another. ...of missing you.” (anonymous) Love is strong for people missing each other because they wish they could just be together. This is the way Juliet felt when Romeo was banished. There is a lot of love between Romeo and Juliet in the play by William Shakespeare. Two young people fall in love but they have families that have been feuding for years. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the theme of love is stronger than hate because Romeo risks his life for Juliet and he agrees to marry Juliet even know there families hate each other. Love is stronger in Romeo and Juliet because they get married even though there families are enemies. Juliet says this to her love Romeo “My love is deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” (2-2-146) This shows Juliet’s love is deep for Romeo because she says that her love is never ending. Even though her family would never approve of her being with Romeo she confesses her love for him. Some believe that hate is stronger in the play Romeo and Juliet; because of the fued. However...

...comparative language to portray the idea that his love for his mistress is rare even though her physical looks aren’t the best in the world. In sonnet 130, Shakespeare uses a tone of criticism to show that her physical beauty may not be the best but he still loves her. For example, in the second quatrain it says, “ And in some perfumes is there more delight, / Than in her breath that from my mistress reeks.” (lines 7-8). The speaker finds himself insecure because he says things like that to describe her true beauty and to prove that he still loves her. In the third quatrain the speaker says, “ I love to hear her speak, yet well I know, / That music hath a far more pleasing sound:” (lines 9-10). Shakespeare is saying that compared to her speaking music has a better sound but he still likes to hear her talk. Shakespeare writes this to point out that real beauty is on the inside not the outside....

...Writing 39a 10/26/13 The Heart’s Lasting Impression Hi Mr. Segal, my name is , and I absolutely love your movies. Longest Yard and 50 First Dates, are two of my all time favorites. You did an excellent job of tying humor, and romanticism together in 50 first dates. There isn’t one thing I can pick out of that movie that I dislike, and I can watch that movie over and over again it is so great. To create a movie of the short story “Lady with the Dog” you must not make the movie with a consistency of hopelessness and bleak upsetting scenes, because of the inevitable. The movie must be uplifting and bring a peace, contentment, and fulfillment when watching the film. The lovers seeking enjoyment in this movie are expecting to see a love story between two married people entrapped by their lives in reality. Everybody seeks adventure, and hope to carry on with the life they have been given, by the choices they have made. So use the expectation of the story to carry out a strong emotional message of hope. The couples as well as single people in hope of romance, want to feel the peace, joy, and fulfillment to know that they will have a lasting and working relationship and find their one true love. In the Anton Checkhov short story “Lady with the Dog” a young beautiful, naïve, and inexperienced woman named Anne visits the beautiful, small town of Yalta. It is a seaside town, full with life, and people that notice anybody new that comes there. Anne a young woman is visiting there with...

...Love is usually described by the public as a feeling of warm, personal attachment or deep affection, commonly related to a parent, child, or friend. Love can bring two people together in a scene where it is them against the world, but it has also torn people to such an extent where their emotions are left like shredded up confetti. This can leave one believing in ridiculous and painful thoughts such as ‘Was it all a lie,’ or even thinking about themselves as unlovable. These two kinds of love can be identified as romantic love and its undesired counterpart, unrequited love. I find it ironic how love can be as romantic as writing beautiful poems under the stars and then crying yourself to sleep because your admirer “just don’t love you that way.”These two feelings of deep affection contradict each other in terms of reciprocation, but both can and have lead to chaos in stories, such as in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare....

...Love in Music of Then and Now During the 11th and 13th centuries during a period known as the Middle Ages a new breed of poets emerged in the south of France. Known as the Troubadours, these poets roamed the land turning their poetry into art by adding an accompaniment of musical instruments. These lyricists wrote their music in the vernacular of Southern France, French, but also included hints of Spanish and Italian from the nearby countries. These storytellers captivated the audiences with their many poems of love and romance. Even though the Middle Ages may have ended eight centuries ago, the content and romance found within the songs still flourishes today in modern songs. The themes and feelings of love have not changed with the advancement in musical technology, this is apparent in the song by Billy Currington Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right. Within this song there are many similarities along with a few differences in his experience with love with that of the Troubadour artist Bernard de Ventadour and his composition of When the Fresh Grass. In the song Must Be Doin' Somthin' Right by Billy Currington he is telling about the feelings and images of love and the woman. He talks about how women are complex and don’t actually know what they want with a man, but, once you find out what they want there are many ways to tell that they are starting to fall in love. It is the man's responsibility to touch upon these hints of love and start working with them in order to...

...People have two major organs, the heart and the brain. When dealing with love, we have to follow your heart, because even though it’s on the left side of the body, it’s always right. However, people often make the mistake of confusing “lust” with “love”. We often think we are in love with something or someone we know we can never have, but it is just lust. What is love? Love has multiple meanings. Love is an intense feeling of deep affection. Love is a person or thing that one loves. Love is a feeling of a deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. Love is also a four letter word that is constantly tossed around like a game. Someone will experience “real” love and be in love. However, there is a difference between lust and love. Webster defines love as an “attraction that includes sexual desire: the strong affection felt by people who have a romantic relationship.” 1 Corinthians 13 defines love as “and now abideth faith, hope, love, and these three: but the greatest of these is love.” Lust is something like being a friend, but we aren’t in a relationship. Lust is beyond a friend level, but less than a relationship. We often lust over superstars, because we can’t have celebrities. Lust can be friends with benefits. Lust is more of a physical attraction and has no lasting effect. Lust can be very selfish. “Passion, greed, covetousness, hatred, lust: these emotions dominate the soul, causing blindness and leading to...

...How Deep Is Your Self Love? By Jim Malloy Jun 4, 2008 One of the biggest lessons on the spiritual journey is learning to love unconditionally. However, what is often overlooked, is the importance of loving yourself along with everything else. After all, aren't you a part of the whole of Life? Here is a wonderful old haiku which illustrates this... "On my horse, clip-clopping through the field. Aha! I'm part of the picture!" As you grow to realize that you are an integral part of Life's grand picture, it becomes clear that loving yourself along with everything else is part of the mission. Some of you may feel uncomfortable with the idea of self love, because it's often interpreted as being overly self involved. Many religions teach that total selflessness is the ideal, and that self love is the antithesis of being selfless. I'm not at all knocking selflessness, but is self love really opposed to selflessness? And is it the same as...

...well as a physical connection. From the moment we are born we seek for a connection, a feeling of warmth from another individual “positive bonding is important from the cradle to the grave” (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). Intimacy whether sexual or non-sexual is established through a sense of “knowing” another individual, this happens through means of honest and deep communication. Christians seek a deeper connection with God through communication, they seek to feel intimate with God, to be known by their Heavenly Father; Psalms 139:23 says “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts” there is deep desire in us to be known and sought even from the One who created us. Friendships are an intimate relationship; friendships were individuals feel comfortable to talk about their inner feelings and thoughts without the fear of being judged or without guilt and shame. According to Balswick and Balswick (2008) shame is the main barrier to a true intimate relationship. In the sexual context, a couple can experience a deeper level of sexual connection when they are emotionally connected and have a committed love for each other (Balswick & Balswick, 2008). Abstinence before marriage In today’s society sex has become such a commodity; it is something that is done...

...meant to strip people their essence and convey the embodiment of a person, “Portraits should provide us with authentic insights into individual personalities and this means much more than simply recording physical impressions…the task of the portrait artist is no so much to produce a likeness as to capture the “reality” of a person”, (Neville Drury, 1992). A painted portrait possesses a life of its own that stems from deep within the painters’ soul and shows the raw soul of the sitter; portraits should allow you to see who the person truly is, its an embodiment. Vincent van Gogh’s 1889 conveys the essence of who van Gogh was, his state of mind and mood through visual...
