...In the 21st century, any company whose ultimate goal is to achieve leadership within its industry, it is necessary that they think beyond their domestic market and consider global markets instead. By doing this, they need to be able to change or implement their strategy in order to stay as competitive as they were before, form alliances and partners along the way and outperform the competition. For Boeing, trying to become the global leader in its industry again meant that they needed to launch an exceptional, better aircraft than their competition, Airbus. They were also relying on foreign partners more than ever before to get every part ready in time for assembly. With the launch of their 25th model named the 787 Dreamliner, scheduled for delivery in 2008, Boeing promised to provide airlines with a fuel efficient aircraft and passengers with a modern, convenient airplane that will take them distances in comfort at competitive prices. A potential benefit of this new aircraft was to decrease fuel consumption by 20% making it more environmental friendly with its quieter takeoffs and landings. The market structure for the Dreamliner has an oligopolistic nature which means there are few aircraft manufactures which sell large quantities to its buyers. With Boeings biggest competitor Airbus unable to compete with the Dreamliner product, Boeing has the chance to take over the market for commercial aircraft. The demand for the Dreamliner is derived demand. Due to customer...

...Analysis of Boeing 787: The Dreamliner Boeing announced the launch of a new jetliner called the Dreamliner (Boeing 787) and hoped to regain its leadership role in the commercial airline industry. I will apply the theories of competitive forces model and the macro-environment to analyze the Boeing case in the following exploration, and then give my suggestions. According to the competitive force model, the first point of the risk of entry by potential competitors is neither high nor low because a new company produces on a small scale even can’t cover the multiple-billions R&D, and Boeing already have accumulated experience, patents, or trade secrets that they are more effective than new companies (Hill & Jones, 2012); while the new“global systems integrator” strategy tends to create potential competitors such as China and Japan. Secondly, the commercial airline industry is a consolidated industry that the launch of A380 from Airbus directly affect the market share of Boeing in 2003, and the fixed costs in this industry is very high; thus, the rivalry among established companies is intensive. Thirdly, A380, A350 etc. are the substitutes with similar basic needs, which are threats to Boeing 787 and leads to the operation risk. On the macro-environment, the economy of developing countries grows very fast that both Boeing and Airbus believed “the passenger traffic in China would surge over 8.0% annually” (Nolan & Kotha, 2005), which tends to ease competitive pressures...

...who shovel coal into the engine of a Transatlantic Ocean Liner, sit in the forecastle of the ship drinking and carrying on with each other. They are an hour out of New York City and have seven more days aboard ship. The men are burly and muscular. Yank, the fiercest looking of the men, sits in the foreground quietly. Whenever Yank speaks the men immediately hush. Yank asks for a beer and the men immediately give one to him. As Yank and the men drink, Yank remains in control as the leader of the group. Yank and the men joke about thinking as they drink. Yank, in a joke repeated during the play, tells the men to be quiet because he is trying to "tink." The men mockingly repeat after him, "think" and then erupt into a chorus of "Drink, don't think!" Cutting through the general mayhem, a drunken tenor sings a tune about his lass at home. Talk of home outside the ocean liner infuriates Yank and he tells the tenor to be quiet. Long, quite drunk, stands up and makes a Marxist speech, preaching to the men that if the ship is home, their home is hell and the Upper Class put them there. Yank tells him to join the Salvation Army and get a soapbox. Paddy, a wise, older fireman tells the men that life on an Ocean Liner is hell by comparison to his life on a Clipper Ship. Paddy reminisces about the freedom he enjoyed, the purpose he had and skill for which he was valued. Yank tells Paddy that he is dead, "living in the past of dreams" and glorifies his own job as the strength of the ship's...

...The San Francisco Chronicle has referred to Drown as a “front liner report on the American dream ambivalent report.’ Drown offers an insightful critic of the American Dream based on the case from two stories. First, the mother in "Aguantando" gets forced periodically to send her kids to stay with relatives since she is unable to afford to feed them. She makes attempts to ease their suffering by telling the kids that the situation could get worse: "We were very poor. The only cause of our poverty or even we having become poorer was due to us living in the campo or having been emigrants from Haitian, and regularly Mami offered us these as a consolation that was brutal “(Diaz 12). In the story “Negocios”, Yunior’s father had a great experience...

...journey, and how I ended up coming to America. Through hardships and sacrifice our family had a dream of going to America and making a better life for our children, and so the story begins. The year was 1914 when I joined the Italian Army, which I served until 1918 fighting in World War 1. It was the end of World War I much of Western Europe was still in turmoil; Men coming home from serving in Armed Services were trying to shift gears from military to civilian life. Times were hard. I married my childhood sweetheart Louisa while on leave from the army, and we had three beautiful children in a few short years. The war took its toll on my country financially, and forced tens of thousands of Italian people to migrate to the United States seeking work, and a better future for their families. My family and I were no exception, there was a big house being shared by several generations, with each family unit having a small bedroom and sharing the kitchen and other living space. As more children were added to the extended family, it became obvious that some of the family groups would have to move out. There was just no work, and the overcrowded conditions were too much to bear, so Louisa and I decided to do what many other Italians were doing, and that was go to America. Many of the men were going to America to make money, and then return home to Italy. This was not my dream, my dream was to find work send for Louisa and the children, and one day buy our own land and build a house...

...A Tragedy or a Blessing? Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States. The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about their new life. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks' front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being quarantined for fourteen days. The family's dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, stomped to the dock to watch the ship leave - without the Clark family. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed both his son and God for their misfortune. Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland - the mighty Tittanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind in Scotland. When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he had felt was a tragedy into a...

...Boeing: Selling a Dream(liner) Think about the biggest purchase that you’ve ever made. Was it a car? A computer? A piece of furniture or an appliance? Think about the time you put in to researching that decision, all the factors that you considered in making your choice, and how much the purchase ultimately cost. Now imagine that you are part of a buying team for a major airline considering the purchase of multiple commercial jets, each costing over $100 million. A slightly different situation? Such are the customers that Boeing deals with every day. Selling commercial and military aircraft involves some of the most complicated transactions in the world. At those prices, a single sale can add up to billions of dollars. And beyond initial prices, Boeing’s clients must consider numerous factors that affect longer-term operating and maintenance costs. As a result, the airplane purchase process is nerve-rackingly slow, often taking years from the first sales presentation to the day Boeing actually delivers an airplane. For such purchases, Boeing knows that it takes more than fast talk and a firm handshake to sell expensive aircraft—it takes a lot of relationship building. So Boeing invests heavily in managing customer relationships. Individual salespeople head up an extensive team of company specialists—sales and service technicians, financial analysts, planners, engineers—all dedicated to finding ways to understand and satisfy airline customer needs. These ...

...Grace Pollari Mellissa Baetens Ultius Inc 10 April 2014 Overcoming the Myth of Separation with Empire of the Sun Our world is presently at a time of crossroads. The century past was one of unprecedented war and environmental ravishment. The gap between the rich and the poor has widened to an absurd degree. The systems humanity has supported to organize our global civilizations are failing as their dependence on limited resources and unsustainable practices are taking their toll on us and our planet. It is clear what humanity needs at this time is a plan of action to work together to live in peace and thrive on the planet. There are many theories of how to accomplish this, and we already have the technology. What is lacking is the passion, the belief that together we can make a change for the better. It is at this crucial time the band, Empire of the Sun, has burst onto the global music scene to spread a bombastic message of love and empowerment for humanity. The systems of corrupt control that have entrenched themselves into our global economy, land management practices, and education have sprung up from those people hosting a delusion that they are separate from their fellow man and from the fate of the planet. The effective war tactic of “divide and conquer” has migrated into the fragmented psyche of humanity. We have forgotten that united we stand and divided we fall. The music of Empire of the Sun, and the creative process of the musicians stands as a microcosm of...

...pairings. Choosing among all the girls to sit with, this young pale-skinned and silent girl really caught my attention. Maybe it was because of her unique hairstyle, but I also believe that sitting beside “Mae”(not her real name) is with a purpose. We talked, though I was the one who really spoke too much because Mae was shy. I’ve known so many things about her in a little span of time. Her favorite food, her favorite toothpaste brand, her crushes and most of all, her dreams. While having a conversation with each other, I just gave my full attention to everything that this girl would say. Despite her very young age, she had already undergone many challenges in life. Most of them made me tell myself that I am so much blessed to have a good family, friends and a community. Despite of all the hurdles that she had went through, Mae stayed strong and with the help of her new-found family in the Girl’s home, scars from her painful past is gradually healed. It came to the point where I asked Mae about her dreams and future plans. I was really expecting for answers like “I wanna be a doctor”, “I wanna...
