...starts on a Friday night in the preseason of the Permian High School Panthers football team. Each player takes part in a prayer as well as watching a video of past heroes of the team. The squad is introduced player by player giving the town a preview of who is playing this year. Bissinger infers that Boobie Miles, a young player, has high hopes and dreams but feels great pressure from the team and town to fill the shoes of the past all-star. The author explains that in a few weeks the beginning of the season will begin and the town will observe the team closely. Bissinger explains to the reader that being able to play for a team such as the Permian Panthers is an honor. He states that the boys on the team will endure intolerable pain to have the privilege of playing for the team and being able to wear the Permian Panther beautiful black jersey. The author presents the idea that winning is more important that personal pain or suffering. As such the author tells how boys will use pain pills and about anything they can get their hands on to persist through the game. In addition, the team is starting to feel the pressure and how important each season is to the town as well as the players. Bissinger explains how children are exposed to the atmosphere of football from a young age and encouraged to continue the legacy of past generations going. ...Taylor Tamayo Period 2 Feb. 3, 2012 Friday Night Lights Movie/Book Analytical Essay H. G. Bissinger was a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer when he was selected to be a Harvard Neiman Fellow. This was while he was at Harvard he had the idea to write a book that specifically focused on the role of high school football plays within American society. This happened to take place in particular rural societies. Bissinger returned to the Inquirer for a short amount of time, received a Pulitzer Prize, and then decided to go out in search of a community in which high school football was prevalent. Bissinger then settled on Odessa, Texas. In Odessa, Texas Permian High School and its football team, the Permian Panthers, had a long history of winning in Texas' 4A and 5A divisions. This earned Permian High School winning championships in 1965, 1972, 1980 and 1984. Bissinger moved himself and his family to Odessa, Texas and spent the entire 1988 football season with the Permian Panther players, their families, their coaches, and even many of the townspeople in an effort to understand the town and its die-hard football culture. Bissinger's newest book, Shooting Stars, was published by Penguin Press in September 2009. The book, co-authored with basketball superstar LeBron James, tells the story of James' high school career. Bissinger is now in the process of completing a book about his twin sons. Born 13 weeks premature in 1983 and weighing less than two pounds, they...

... Bissinger, the author of Friday Night Lights, juxtaposes different aspects of athletes lives in Permian to expose the negative impacts of football in Odessa. Throughout the telling of Friday Night Lights Bissinger uses imagery to portray the glory of the football season at Permian high school. In the football stadium “stillness was ruptured by a thousand different sounds smashing into each other in wonderful chaos”(14) and fans lost “all dignity and restraint...because of these high school boys in front of them, their boys, their heroes”(14). A sense of unity is immediately conveyed to the audience regarding this town. The colorful language inspires a feeling of excitement in the reader that is akin to that of Permian fans. As the piece progresses the town’s sociological need for football is highlighted. The teenagers are conditioned from childhood to become Permian Panthers or Pepettes; the highest of the high school food chain. To some “the game of football has become as important, as indispensable, as a part of their bodies”(72). After featuring excerpts regarding individual players, father-son relationships, and racism within Odessa, Bissinger shifts to a different concept; life between football. These idolized players walk the halls with hordes of admirers following close by. The boys are praised during Friday morning pep rallies and coddled by their personal pepette, who tends to all their needs. As Bissinger depicts these boys within the classroom he uses the same...

...It’s Not Just Football: Friday Night Lights Review For many people who aren’t sports fans, a television drama about a high school football team in Texas does not sound interesting. But NBC’s Friday Night Lights is one of the best American TV dramas in recent years. There's a level of honest, raw humanity in this Primetime Emmy award-winning show that few TV dramas have ever achieved. Friday Night Lights focuses on the small town of Dillon, Texas, where what matters most is the local high school football team. Eric Taylor is the new head coach of the Dillon High School Panthers. This is a job that comes with an incredible amount of pressure, as everywhere he goes, Eric hears how much the town is counting on him to take their boys to the state championship game. The show illustrates the stress that a town gives its high school players to win and the hope that a team gives to a small town. To have a heightened sense of realism and immerse viewers in the world of the show’s characters, Friday Night Lights...

...During the 1930’s, James Adams invented the term, “American Dream”-the opportunity given to everyone to reach their dreams through perseverance and meaningful application. (Apposition) The remembered NBA player, Michael Jordan, exemplifies the meaning of the American Dream through his life. In his highschool years, Michael Jordan tried out for the basketball team, but he was not able to make it on the team. Through daily practices, and an endless amount of effort, the boy who was not able to make it on a high school team turned out to be NBA’s most valuable player. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck clearly expresses his emotion on how he believe the idea of the American Dream is a complete myth through the characters of his novel. John Steinbeck argues that the American Dream will never become a reality due to racial, sexist, and social class issues. John Steinbeck shares his thoughts about the American Dream through the character Curley. In the book, Curley is characterized as a rude and ill-mannered man,...

...connection between baseball and Troy’s trying life leads me to my point. The use of baseball in Fences is to symbolize the American dream and it being unattainable to Troy Maxson. First, how is it that our American pastime can be directly related to and represented as the American dream? There are several connections between the sport and the American dream that lead me to my thesis. The article Baseball as History and Myth in August Wilson’s Fences does a great job of connecting these two seemingly unrelated subjects. This article starts with a great quote by John Thorn saying, baseball has become “the great repository of national ideals, the symbol of all that [is] good in American life: fair play; the rule of law; equal opportunity; the brotherhood of man; and more.” Fair play shown through sportsmanship between the two teams, rule of law in “objective arbitration of disputes,” equal opportunity as each team is given a chance on both offensive and defensive sides each inning, and brotherhood as fans share the stands as they root on their team. The article goes on to make a very valid point about the baseball diamond itself. The playing field can be looked at as archetypal, being “a walled garden, an American Eden marked by youth and timelessness.” This ever-lasting battlefield for teams also plays well into the American ideals and American dream. As Bart...

...The idea of the American Dream has been with us as long as we have been a nation. In Brandon Kings “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, Or On Hold?” he presents us with his version of the American dream. According to King the American dream is defined as “The potential to work for an honest, secure way of life and save for the future” (611). The American dream may differ between every individual and how they perceive it. To some, the American dream is to have a decent job and to be financially successful. However, to others, having a job is defined as just living each passing month. The American dream basically means opportunity. That opportunity is seen as the ability to make an impact in life through hard work and dedication. To me, the American...

...The story of the American Dream is as old as the Republic itself: come to America for a fresh start, work hard, seize the opportunities here to do better than your parents, and reach financial success for the benefit of your family. Does that American Dream still apply in today’s rapidly changing world, particularly in Silicon Valley? While my life so far looks like the culmination of an American Dream, I have been unaware that there are many people who do not live my lifestyle and who lack my opportunities. Many live hard lives of financial struggle, including my ancestors, as I only recently learned. Although I believe I have personally experienced the American Dream, I have begun to realize that many people around me and from my family’s...

...able to focus on schoolwork and give time, effort and energy to a team is very impressive and gives the University positive credit. The University would also benefit greatly from the agreement that is between them and the athlete. College athletes should get paid to participate in collegiate sports because it would offer the athletes time management skills, decrease the athletes stress about financial needs and provide the athletes the opportunity to graduate from college debt free. Currently in the United States there are millions of athletes. 3% of those high school athletes will continue their athletic career in college. Many of those college athletes don’t have the financial requirements to attend college; that’s where the scholarships come in. For instance, i would love to have a B’ average or higher throughout my whole high school experience. Also, since i have a love for football i wish to join and play for the football team in high school. Another dream/goal i want to accomplish is to overall be a better student than i ever was. Therefore i have three main goals i will be talking about in this essay that i hope and will attain during my high school career. First and foremost, to atleast have a B’ average is a goal i wish to have because it's something i've always wanted to accomplish but never did in middle school. Since i wasn't the best alumni in middle school i would love to start off new in high school and prove to others and myself that i am able to do it. In other words, having at least a B’ average or higher would be a great attainment because of the fact that i never got to accomplish it in my previous years in middle school. Thus, it would be a dream/goal to achieve that, due to the fact that i would also like to make my mom and family proud....
