Extra-curricular activities are offered to a student who wants to spend his spare time in an enjoyable and structured environment. He is encouraged to take part in activities so that it will benefit him in other areas of his life. One area that an extra-curricular activity affects is academic achievement. It can have a positive and a negative impact on a child's grades. Purpose The purpose of extra-curricular activities is to give children the chance to take part in interests that aren't covered in academic classes, according to the Jackson Public School District. For example, a child can pursue his love of soccer by joining an after-school team because PE lessons have to include other sports as well as soccer. A child who enjoys politics can join a debate team if he isn't able to take an elective in politics. These extra activities are supposed to enrich a child's education and give him a well-rounded experience outside of the classroom. Positive Effect There is believed to be a direct correlation between participation in an extra-curricular activity and high academic achievement. ...The Effect of Extracurricular Activities Mary J. Houser University of Illinois Abstract This research sought to examine and determine the relationship between a student’s involvement in extracurricular activities and their grade point average. The participation of extracurricular activities is defined as being an active participant or member of a club, sport, musical group, or academic group on a student’s education campus. Research was gathered from a multitude of sources and previous research. The data and research has shown that there is a positive relationship between the two factors; as a student’s involvement increases, so does his or her grade point average. To look at this relationship more closely and exact, the relationship between a student’s involvement in high school athletics and their grade point average was examined. Once again, the research said that there is a positive relationship between the two. This research will also look at why these two things have the type of relationship that they do. It goes into some detail about the factors that cause a student’s grade point average and overall success to rise when he or she is more actively involved in their school’s extracurricular activities. When a student enters high school, the experience of schooling becomes far more than just the academic experience alone. Rather than just having to focus on their schooling, they are immediately exposed to other activities such as clubs, athletic teams, music...

...Running Head: TIME MANAGEMENT EFFECTS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 1 The Effects of Time Management on College Students’ Academic Performance Jamie C. Denlinger Ball State University TIME MANAGEMENT EFFECTS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Abstract The objective of this investigation was to examine the influence that time management has on 22 of Ball State University’s college students’ academic performance and 2 achievements. By conducting a survey based on gender, grade, major, and extracurricular activity involvement, I was able to analyze the data in organized charts. Data proves that being involved in extracurricular activities or demanding majors and having a high desire to succeed were found to be the main predictors in successful time management skills. The self-perception of having good time-management skills proved to have a direct correlation to performance levels. Students that perceive themselves as having good time management skills were the students who were more involved and had a high desire to achieve, resulting in a higher level of performance. To improve academic performance among college students, self-attitudes and participation in activities that keep schedules busy will help enforce the principle influence; time management practices. Keywords: academic, influence, performance, time management The Effects of Time Management on College Students’ Academic Performance Do you ever feel as if you can’t get everything done that you need to, or that you work...

This had been done by searching different reference materials that would be essential for the study. Upon examining and reading all research materials, it becomes clear that extracurricular activities are really helpful for students’ betterment. This research highlights how such activities become so important for students /adolescents like me. Extracurricular Activities have several effects on students’ inter-personal, academic performance and educational attainment, physical, and social development, which make it to be important. The increasing importance of extracurricular activities is evidenced by a number of very definite facts: the amount of space given to the discussion of them in educational journal and magazines; the number of studies and experiments that are being made; the appearance of books in this field ( as what I saw when I searched for reference materials); the inclusion of extracurricular activities in the regular schedule of the school; the allowance of teacher’s time for directing them; and the equipments that is provided for them . However, how can these extracurricular activities affect students to be so important like this? Extracurricular Activities Greatly Help on Students’ Inter-personal Development According to Barnett (n.d.) extracurricular activities make students...

Print This | Email This | PDF This The Importance of Extracurricular Activities for Teens Academics are an important part of each student's high school years, especially since high school grades play an integral role in college acceptance. Parents spend a lot of time encouraging their teens to study more and play less in the pursuit of this goal. They believe that devoting a great deal of time to studying guarantees success in future college applications. However, there is another more playful component of a wellrounded education outside the regular academic program that may positively impact students' success. Extracurricular activities, such as basketball, baseball, tennis, debating, chess clubs, student government, yearbook, drama, choir and computer clubs can round out students' academic careers to great effect. Besides being fun and a great way to socialize with peers, extracurricular activities can enhance students' time management and stress management skills, improving overall productivity. Extracurricular activities also increase a candidate's appeal when applying to college. "Studies show that students in extracurricular activities have higher [academic] scores. They learn to manage their time, relieve stress and learn to strive for excellence in more than one thing," says Kenny Smith, a school counselor in Thatcher, Arizona...

...Extracurricular activities are found in all levels of our schools in many different forms. They can be sports, clubs, debate, drama, school publications, student council, and other social events. A student’s future can be determined in the things that they do in the hours after school and before their parents get home. Extracurricular activities are totally voluntary so students that do not want to participate in them do not have to. However, they provide experiences that are not included in formal courses of study. They allow students to apply the knowledge that they have learned in other classes and acquire concepts of democratic life. Extracurricular activities have many positive effects on education. The positive effects that extracurricular activities have on students are behaviour, better grades, school completion, positive aspects to become successful adults, and a social aspect. Extracurricular activities began in the United States in the 19th century. The first extracurricular activities that were well known in schools started at Harvard and Yale University. The first effect that extracurricular activities have on education is behaviour. Students that participate in extracurricular activities have reduced behaviour problems. In sports, they show discipline in drills, practices, and routines. They have a responsibility to perform those tasks correctly, whether it is basketball of football plays, dance routines, or signals in baseball. When students perform these things...

...The Effect of Employment on Student Outcomes in High School and Beyond The Question How does student employment affect students' personal, social, and academic outcomes? The Context Many American students consider employment an integral part of their high school experience. NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) data from 1992 show that more than two-thirds of high school students were employed during their senior year, with 22.7 percent of those students working more than 20 hours per week. Most students worked in nonacademic jobs, with almost 25 percent employed in the food service industry, 14.5 percent working as a grocery clerk or cashier, and 11.8 percent working in sales. The vast majority of students earned between $4.25 and $6 per hour. Students in the United States work more than students in most other, postindustrial countries—more than triple the average amount of time their European and East Asian peers spend working, in fact. Researchers have taken many different approaches to examining the issue of employment and its effect on student outcomes and, as a result, have reached a wide range of conclusions. Some have concluded that increased time spent working results in decreased time spent on school activities and, thus, lower academic achievement, whereas others suggest that work experience builds character, strengthens organizational skills, and gives students a sense of responsibility that may actually increase achievement. Other researchers...

...Impact of Extracurricular Activity On Students Mitchell Sable University of Detroit Mercy Extracurricular activities are any activities that students participate in outside of the mandatory educational curriculum. Students can participate in extracurricular activities at any age. These activities can be affiliated with the school or be outside of school. Extracurricular activities may include sports teams, special-interest clubs, theater, music, art, work, and volunteering in community service fields. Extracurricular activities are an important topic in today’s society due to colleges and graduate programs looking for ever increasing involvement of students outside of classes. It is important to know how participating in extracurricular activities can increase overall success for individuals. It is also important to discuss if the cost of extracurricular activities are worth the consequences they bring or if the money would be better spent on direct learning. This research paper will focus on students in middle school and high school, and the articles chosen are able to show how extracurricular activities correlate to grades, motivation, and overall success of the student. The article Extracurricular Participation and Academic Outcomes: Testing the Over-Scheduling Hypothesis by Jennifer Fredricks (2011) showed that 10th graders with extracurricular activities exhibited positive effects from them. Students received the greatest improvement in grades from zero to five hours...
