Research Paper: The Influence Barbie Dolls Have On Little Girls As a child, many young girls received dolls to play with, and one of the most popular dolls that many mothers give to their child are the Barbie dolls. This Barbie dolls have been made to look like the ideal women with their thin bodies and their perfect faces. Some research has shown that young girls, especially girls from ages five to seven, who play with this Barbie dolls have had body image problems. As Helga Dittmar, Emma Halliwell and Suzanne Ive state in their article " girls from age 5 1/2 to age 6 1/2 years old, that [were exposed to a] Barbie doll [were] significantly depressed [with their] overall body esteem and had discrepancies between [their] actual and ideal body size". In another article, Tara L. Kuther and Erin McDonald wrote that “Barbie dolls are pervasive within [a] girls’ experience and may influence their developing self-concept”. In this following experiment, we’re going to find out if Barbie dolls really do influence the way little girls think of how a women should be.
For this experiment we will use twenty little girls from ages five to seven because that's around the age range when little girls start and stop playing with Barbie dolls. These girls would be Americans that come from middle class families who have never played with a Barbie before. We will pick ten random girls to go into a room with the Barbie dolls, the Barbie dolls accessories and the dream house and cars. The Barbies will all be the same, which means that they will all have the blond and blue eyed look and not be the ones that are colored. This room will also have all the Barbies dressed in their career outfits next to their area of work so the little girls will have a variety of Barbie dolls to choose from that have different careers. This means that if the Barbie is dressed as a chef,

Women Vs. Hilary Clinton: The Socialization Of Women

... women have been abused, oppressed, and thought of as a lesser being. Even today, women are mistreated around the world. From getting the right to vote to Hilary Clinton being the first female presidential candidate, women have been making huge leaps and bounds towards equality. Although these achievements are great, women still have a long road to equality. We are all so different, but experience many of the same struggles. I feel as though these interviews showcase the differences as well as the similarities between generations of women. My first interview is “Penny”. Penny is 19 years old, single, and has no children. She is currently attending college and has lived in Ohio for the majority of her life. When she was younger,...

...sources to our image. Being a male myself, I can’t fully appreciate the relationship of a womans body image and the media, but I can get a pretty good idea based on observations and experience. Social media has become one of the biggest, if not the biggest influence on young people today. The fact that there many different words being created in reference to this, shows the impact it is having. For example the term “selfie” never existed before Facebook was invented. This effect can often often be seen as a negative, as Miribel Tran points out “Social media is prevalent in society today, and it has been scientifically linked with causing depression in young girls” Girls constantly are forced to look at pictures of their peers and compare themselves. This is so unfair, because not everyone is born with the same genetics, and it is simply impossible for everyone to be equally beautiful, from a purely physical standpoint. The same can also apply for males, but often in a different form. While most girls post selfies, trying to...

Disney Body Image

...Parents have good reason to be wary of what their kids view; however, parents are now making mountains out of molehills with many things children watch. Like how there is growing concern that Disney Princesses have a negative impact on girls’ body image. While children need to learn about the unrealistic images of women in the media, not all portrayals have the same affect. To copy what they see is essential for a child’s mental growth, but what they see can be overshadowed by other elements. One of the main concerns for...

...There are so many virtual worlds for young people and it is hard to know which world and game is for each age group. Here we have tried to split the virtual worlds into categories with descriptions for you. Best Virtual Worlds for Kids: 1. Neopets: This is a very popular virtual world for kids and some tweens. 2. Lulilab: This used to be called Playdo, Lulilab lets players travel, chat and build their own worlds. Lulilab has won some awards for its graphics. 3. Nicktropolis: Nicktropolis boasts over 8.6 million citizens, who actively surf, skateboard, snowboard, play games, create avatars and meet friends. It’s sponsored by Nickelodeon, so you know it’s kid friendly. 4. Club Penguin This is a virtual world for kids with penguin avatars where they can chat, play games and hang out. Club Penguin seems to be very addictive for those who play.  I like this virtual world, but doesn’t seem to stick for those about 11. 5. Build-a-Bearville I might be a bit biased because I LOVE Build-a-Bear and this is the perfect continuation of the Build-a-Bear workshops into the online world. Best Virtual Worlds for Tweens: 6. Toon Town Toon Town USA is a website for kids from the Walt Disney Company. It uses familiar characters from Disney to interact with users. I think this is great because it lets kids do more with Disney Characters than just watch them on TV or see them at Disneyland. 7. Wizard 101 If your kids love Harry Potter, they are going to love this.  I like that this virtual...

Woman in Pacific

...Deborah L. Rhode and Barbara Kellerman July, 2006 c Some four decades ago, Betty Friedan helped launch the contemporary women’s movement with her publication of The Feminine Mystique. The book famously identified a “problem that has no name”: American women’s confinement to a separate and unequal domestic sphere. One factor contributing to women’s unequal status was their absence from leadership positions. Another aspect of the problem was the lack of cultural consensus that this absence was itself part of the problem, and a matter of social concern. Over the last several decades, we have named that leadership problem and created a cottage industry to address it. Women’s underrepresentation in positions of power generates an increasing array of committees, commissions, consultants, centers, conferences, and commentary such as the essays that follow. Yet while we have made considerable progress in understanding the problem, we remain a dispiriting distance from solving it. I. The Underrepresentation of Women in Leadership Roles The facts are frustratingly familiar. Despite almost a half-century of equal opportunity legislation, women’s opportunities for leadership are anything but equal. To be sure, the situation has improved significantly over this period, particularly if leadership is broadly defined to include informal as well as formal exercises of authority.[i] By that definition, the percentage of women in leadership roles is substantial and is increasing...

Linguistics and the Human Sciences

...expansion of their community within the United States has created an unparalleled situation of language contact. Language is synonymous with identity (cf. Granger, 2004, and works cited within). To the extent that this is true, Spanish is synonymous with being Mexican and by extension, Chicano. With the advent of amnesty programs such as Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), which naturalized millions of Mexican migrants, what was once a temporal migratory population has become increasingly permanent (Durand et al., 1999). In an effort to conserve Mexican traditions and identity, the struggle to preserve the mother tongue while at the same time acculturate to mainstream Americana has resulted in a variant of Spanglish that has received little attention. This paper will examine the variant of Spanglish seen in the greater Los Angeles area and liken it to the bi-national identity under which these Mexican Americans thrive. Manager

...Learning with Cases INTRODUCTION The case study method of teaching used in management education is quite different from most of the methods of teaching used at the school and undergraduate course levels. Unlike traditional lecture-based teaching where student participation in the classroom is minimal, the case method is an active learning method, which requires participation and involvement from the student in the classroom. For students who have been exposed only to the traditional teaching methods, this calls for a major change in their approach to learning. This introduction is intended to provide students with some basic information about the case method, and guidelines about what they must do to gain the maximum benefit from the method. We begin by taking a brief look at what case studies are, and how they are used in the classroom. Then we discuss what the student needs to do to prepare for a class, and what she can expect during the case discussion. We also explain how student performance is evaluated in a case study based course. Finally, we describe the benefits a student of management can expect to gain through the use of the case method. WHAT IS A CASE STUDY? There is no universally accepted definition for a case study, and the case method means different things to different people. Consequently, all case studies are not structured similarly, and variations abound in terms of style, structure and approach. Case material ranges from small caselets (a few paragraphs...

The demographic profile of the workforce is undergoing quite a change insofar as the representation of generations and the result is that organizations are experiencing a necessity to make changes as well. The workforce will become increasingly more diverse in the future and this greatly affects the organization in its capacity of hiring and retaining employees. The literature reviewed within this study illustrates the fact that the expectations of employees differ within the generations represented in today’s workforce and unless managers have a sound knowledge-base of the needs and expectations of the organization’s employees then keeping these employees motivated may prove to be quite difficult. 2001, many intelligence agencies have experienced a surge in hiring however; many of these employees have five (5) years experience or less. Furthermore, a recent...
