The events that occurred on September 11, 2001 have had long lasting residual effects on the every day lives of Americans. These particular adjustments to our society can be seen in airline regulations, government observation, and government spending regarding the war and other political movements. Although these particular situations seem different they are all related to the events and repercussions of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The first and most obvious effect of 9/11 can be seen through the overall increased spending of America, and the increasing strain of taxes to support the efforts in Iraq and surrounding nations. The financial strain is not merely based upon our military action across seas, but also includes advertising spending for the armed forces, as well as governmental propaganda and advertising as a means to encourage American civilians to join in effort against particular terrorist organizations. Unfortunately, for one of the first times in American history, this particular war as caused a lasting strain on the economy, as compared to past wars that provided major increases in overall economic standings of our nation. Another major adjustment that Americans must face daily is the presence of government cameras and monitoring around our cities. In the past these observations and monitoring was restricted to big cities with high crime rate, but due to the specific events of 9/11 nearly every street corner, traffic light, and building has some form of video or audio monitoring that our government is capable of accessing though one way or another. Although many see this as a beneficial aspect of American life, many find it unsettling that the government can monitor nearly any individuals actions at a given time with little to no explanation of their reasoning. Lastly, the effects of 9/11 can be seen through the heightened restrictions in our airline system. At one time the procedure merely required an individual to walk through a metal detector before boarding an aircraft. After the terrorist attacks this all changed. Now individuals are restricted on the items that they are allowed to take on board, can be forced to participate in a search, or can even be submitted to a full body scan. The once time consuming task to board an airplane has become even more of a pain for many Americans because they are forced to abide by the modern overcautious restrictions of our airline services. Although the attack of 9/11 was devastating to the American people during 2001, its residual effects can still be seen in our culture and society today. Government spending, heightened surveillance, and increased airport restrictions are just a few of the effects that can be seen in our daily lives. As a country we can only hope to embrace the event as a tragic day in American history, and to move toward a brighter and more economically stable future for the citizens of our nation.
