...MSR New England Social Media Research Amelia Abreu, Andres Monroy Hernandez, and Omar Wasow 7 September 2010 Each speaker will give a 12 minute presentation of their work and then there will be an open discussion. #1: Amelia Abreu, University of Washington 'Tag!: How games and memes create social infrastructure online' This paper examines 'tag' games played on YouTube. We employ case study methodology to track and compare games across several user communities, analyzing content and discourse in structure, representation of identity, use of the system, and genre development. Examining individual and group dynamics in play, we extract models for their transmission and formation. Framing tag games as contemporary folklore, we examine how video sharing technology has become subject of folklore as well as an a vehicle for it. As the research suggests, games studied exhibit not only play in sharing and showing details, but in organizing and structuring ideas and identities, thus revealing a complex informal information infrastructure. In conclusion, we consider how this infrastructural model compares to formal systems of indexing. #2: Andres Monroy-Hernandez, MIT Media Lab 'Copyrights and copycats: understanding young people's remixing practices' Digital technologies have made it easier for people, youth in particular, to copy and reuse other people's songs, pictures, code and other forms of digital creations. ...Introduction Social media had been a massive part in every household. Technology had given us a great deal and helped us with our tasks and made everything easy. We know that social media sites like (Google+, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo) had introduced us in many methods that can connect people easier. Social media sites had been a popular means to connect with other people over the Internet. During the 1980's home computers were becoming more common in every household and social media sites were becoming more refined. According to Hendricks, (2013) The Internet relay chats, or IRCs, were first used in 1988 and were popularized into the '90s. The first popular social media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. The site enabled its users to upload a profile and make friends with the other users. By 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world. These sites still remain as the most popular social network on the Internet. After the success of these social media sites, other sites like Tumbler, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began appearing to fill specific social network niches. Furthermore, Hendricks (2013) emphasized that, "there are a tremendous variety of social networking sites, and many of them can be linked to allow cross posting. This creates an environment where users can reach the maximum number of people without sacrificing the intimacy of person-to-person communication. We can only speculate about what the future of social networking...

...241—251 www.elsevier.com/locate/bushor Social media? Get serious! Understanding the functional building blocks of social media Jan H. Kietzmann *, Kristopher Hermkens, Ian P. McCarthy, Bruno S. Silvestre Segal Graduate School of Business, Simon Fraser University, 500 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1W6, Canada KEYWORDS Social media; Social networks; Web 2.0; User-generated content; Facebook; Twitter; LinkedIn; YouTube Abstract Traditionally, consumers used the Internet to simply expend content: they read it, they watched it, and they used it to buy products and services. Increasingly, however, consumers are utilizing platforms–—such as content sharing sites, blogs, social networking, and wikis–—to create, modify, share, and discuss Internet content. This represents the social media phenomenon, which can now significantly impact a firm’s reputation, sales, and even survival. Yet, many executives eschew or ignore this form of media because they don’t understand what it is, the various forms it can take, and how to engage with it and learn. In response, we present a framework that defines social media by using seven functional building blocks: identity, conversations, sharing, presence, relationships, reputation, and groups. As different social media activities are defined by the extent to which they focus on some or all of these blocks, we explain the implications that each block can have for how firms should engage with social media. To conclude, we present a number of recommendations...

...resolving it must be agreeable by both the parties. The preamble of the Constitution of India declares to “...... to secure all its citizen justice, liberty, equality and fraternity”. The justice granted to citizen is of social, economical and political. However, the mode of delivering the justice to the citizen of India poses so many questions. It is in this regard necessary to put the question that whether the present system of access to justice is satisfactorily fulfilling the constitutional goal? The present mode of access to justice in India is based on the adversarial legalism. This system is generally followed in the common law countries. In this mode of justice the State plays a neutral role and it is parties who are responsible for initiating and conducting litigation. However, any crime is considered as an offence against the State in which such proceeding is initiated. This mode of justice was adopted by the Britishers to exploit the masses in their colonies. The whole set up was for the convenience of the administration in which the position of the power addressee was very pathetic. If we analyse the adversarial legal system, we could find that there is no parity of power between the parties to the dispute. It discriminates on the social, economical and political ground and thus directly hit to the...

...Negative Effects of Social Media Although created to allow people to keep in contact, social media is a ticking time bomb that has adverse effects. The negative effects from social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, range from misinformation to arguments and depression. There is nothing that goes unsaid when it comes to online communication. Numerous hot topics are hit every single day leading to resentment, hate and the ending of friendships. False Information The commonality of false information on social media is unreal. Every day I skim through my Facebook feed, I see the most ridiculous things being shared by my friends that are assumed to be true. I can’t help but to subconsciously look down on people who share such things. Users of social media are much too quick to share information without first verifying their sources. It is 2014 and in this day and age, we are only as smart as our ability to use the internet correctly. Establishing the validity of everything shared is something that should be done more often, yet is rarely done at all. There are countless bogus websites, such as The Onion, who post ridiculous articles that prey on the emotions from recent events. Current, trending topics are Robin Williams’ suicide and the case of Michael Brown. People are getting extremely worked up reading false articles that lead to their misguided opinions on topics that aren’t even real. It’s no secret that when emotions and social media mix, fire is ignited. ...

It was a serious mistake because due to his poor choice of words the post indicated that he was threatening the police guard. Few adjust the settings because they feel like Facebook has enough privacy and some are also unaware of the setting options. For the case in paragraph 1 I believe the officials did the right thing. The student was statement about the police officer that might have no even been true. This put the officer in danger and was the wrong way to approach his problem. He should have talked to the school officials instead of posting on social...

...The Student Journal for Media Literacy Education is published twice each year, and includes articles by undergraduate college students studying media literacy. Social Media Impact and Implications on Society By Nick Pernisco, SJMLE Editor In the past five years, social media websites have become ubiquitous, giving young people a new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. This new form of communication depends on usercreated content, not mass produced messages coming from large media companies. But as with other media before it, social media's rise to prominence has experienced some very serious growing pains. Companies like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter have struggled to balance an inviting interactive environment with the ultimate pursuit of profits. Thanks to these sites, our expectations of the web, as well as society, have changed. This issue of the Student Journal for Media Literacy Education aims to explore some of the issues related to social media, and a generation fully engaged in this interactive world. The main focus is popular social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn, but other social networking sites are explored as well. All articles in the Journal have been written by college students in Santa Monica College’s Reading The Media course in Spring 2010, under my supervision. The students selected from a list of topic related to current issues in social media. I reviewed all of the articles...

...Negative Effects of the Social Media Nowadays with the development of advanced technology, social media become more and more popular. There are about 2 billion social media users around the globe. By social media, people can share and receive updated information whenever and whatever they do. Many people are keen on the social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube because they can connect people with each other conveniently. However, these social media bring many potential dangers. In my opinion, social media do more harm than good. It is no doubt that social media provide people lots of conveniences. For example, if students encounter difficult questions in homework, they do not need to use telephones or mobile phones any longer. They just need to log in their Facebook and discuss the problems with friends. This method not only saves time but also saves a telephone charge. That's why social media are so popular that billions of people use them. Although the social media have benefits, they bring many harms. The problem that students are addicted to the social media is becoming more and more severe. For example, many students who have lots of friends in the Facebook spend much time on chatting with friends and ignore their studies. In addition, the flash games on Facebook are like drugs. The games make students addicted so that they can not concentrate on studying. Spending several hours is very common for them. Social media is also harmful to the social stability...

...Executive Summary Social media, online social networking service, has been existed for a long time. In that time, people use social media as an effective way to expand our social circle. People who use these sites form a social network, which provides a very strong and powerful way to connect, share interests, and keep in touch with others across the miles. However, as “the valuation of Facebook raised in a significant way, settling at figures in excess of $80 billion just after the company’s developer conference in September, 2011” (O'Dell, 2011). This valuation of the social media is only ranked second to Google’s. Even an obtuse CEO can realize the important impact on the business industry that social media will bring. Such a high valuation is not only because Facebook provides more than 600 million users a platform to communicate with each other, both in their leisure time and at work. Therefore, it is obvious to observe the social media’s economic impact. The economic impacts of the social media are increased work opportunities, decreased business cost, positive push in consumers’ purchasing behavior, increased opportunities for small businesses, and increased employees’ productivity. However, one thing should be noted that there may some different economic impacts in different countries because each country has their own cultures, economies, and business structures. Introduction of Social Media Social media, online social networking service, is among the most popular...

The social media craze is one that affects most if not all persons today. Whether we are old, young, from different races or cultures, we have been exposed to these channels of interaction in some way. Not only that but we have a wide range of these Medias to select from. While some operate one or two accounts, there are those with multiple social media accounts for example Facebook, Twitter, Tagged, Viber, Whatsapp and so on. These types of media serve many different purposes including the replacement of traditional news forms, keeping in contact with friends and family members and to promote businesses and social events. The reality of it all, however, is that everything has both advantages and disadvantages. In this case we examine the negative effects of social media on the use of Standard English in the Jamaican Classroom. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the extent to which the use of social media has contributed to the inappropriate use of the Standard Jamaican English and the poor expression in written language among our Jamaican students. Jamaica has been described as a bilingual society with the Jamaican Creole (JC) and Standard Jamaican English (SJE) being the major and minor languages. However the problem...
