...The End of Something How does Ernest Hemingway express the emotions state in the story through the action and the setting? Hortons Bay used to be a prosperous lumber town, but nothing was left from it anymore. The title refers to the end of an old-fashioned way of living, and bringing of a new modern life. In the 19th century mills were an important part of production and many American towns were built around mills or factories. But in the beginning of 20th century such remote mills were closed, and people need to find new ways of making a living. Also the title refers to the end of a love story between Nick and Marjorie. Nothing is clearly said about the past of the couple, but Hemingway technique of objective correlations leaves space to the reader to guess the story. It looks like Nick and Marjorie have been together for a long time, since they recall their house in this old town which no more exists. Also there is intimacy and routines between them, which points to what once could have been an important and solid relationship. Nick and Marjorie have gone for fishing; Marjorie loves fishing with Nick, while nothing similar is noted about Nick. The author is reserved, he describes the conversation between the couple, but he doesn’t add anything which can explain their feelings or their thoughts. This task is left entirely to the reader. The settings that Hemingway uses provide the reader with a vivid imaginary of the scenes. Contrary to the emotions of the characters,...

...with Nick. She says the fish are feeding, but Nick counters that they will not strike and be caught. The two pull the boat up on a shore and cut up the perch that they have caught for bait. They go back out to set the lines. Then, the two pull up on shore again. Marjorie asks Nick if something is wrong, but he claims not to know what is bothering him. They make a fire and put down a blanket. She summons him to eat their picnic, even though he says he does not feel like eating. They eat in silence. Then, they make a little conversation. Nick teases Marjorie, and she becomes frustrated. She asks again what is wrong, and, after some prodding, he finally tells her that he is not having fun anymore. She asks whether love is any fun, and he says no. She leaves without a goodbye. Nick lies there for a while. Bill arrives and asks whether she is gone. Nick tells him that she is and that there was no scene. When Bill asks how he feels, Nick tells him to go away. Bill takes a sandwich and goes to inspect the fishing rods. The title of this story refers to two things: the end of Hortons Bay as a prosperous town and the end of Nick and Marjorie’s relationship. Both endings are important because they signal the end of an old-fashioned way of doing things. In the nineteenth century, many American towns grew up around mills or factories. But, in the early twentieth century, such enterprises were being consolidated, so...

...The nature of the universe in Aristotle lecture in “Nicomachean Ethics” is the end of in all the things we do, “Therefore, if there is an end for all that we do, this will be the good achievable by action (Aristotle 5). We are uncertain of the end to come because the choices we are to make in life has a different ending to them. Aristotle implication in his lecture are that we may find that end through knowledge of art or particularly, political sciences and desiring to aim at it for the sake of pursing something good. The universe teaches us that the good things to be learned in life starts with known about certain subjects. An end is reached when men performs acts that’s leading to that end. Which is the only way men arriving at any state...

...* Da-sein is always after its “potentiality-of-being”; it is influenced by being ahead of itself even when there is nothing further ahead of it. * Hopelessness does not tear away da-sein from its possibilities/potentiality of its being; it is simply another way towards them. * Da-sein always lives for the sake of itself * There is always something “outstanding” in Da-sein that has not yet become real (it is merely a potentiality for its being) thus exists a feeling of incompleteness and the presence of a “nothing” * Eliminating what is outstanding (i.e. attaining “wholeness”) annihilates Da-sein’s being. Should this occur, it will never again be experienced as a being-in-the-world * ------------ b. The impossibility of grasping Da-sein as a whole 2. The Possibility of Experiencing the Death of Others and the Possibility of Grasping Da-sein as a Whole c. Death brings Da-sein to wholeness. Death is the transition from “being there” to no-longer-being-there. d. Death takes away the possibility for da-sein to experience it (death) as something “experienced” e. We may look then to the death of others to understand the no-longer-being-there, in the sense of “no longer being in the world.” Death becomes “objectively” accessible through the death of others and gain an “experience” of death, considering how Da-sein is essentially a “being with others.” f. However, due to the presence of a...

...relations to his subjects and to in special. Christine: "Christine was his favourite, the sassy gospel singer who'd made it big; who was delighted by her own booty and sang songs about pride and God." As the quite says she is William's favourite. He had enjoyed to write her biography more than any of the others. In my opinion he sees her as a kind of light in the dark. In his eyes she is the smile and happiness he misses. "He pulled the curtains even tighter together..." he is sitting in his study with the curtains pulled which creates a dark atmosphere with Christine as his guiding light. William's feelings for her through his writing is also shown at the end of the story: "He wanted to give Christine something she had never had, something important of himself." in the biography of her he wants to do something special for her something the others will not get. He gives a blue elephant just like he got. An elephant which symbolysis his happiness and joy. Some of the best things of himself. There is a parallel between William and his wife. He cannot finish his book and she cannot get pregnant. And while they have sex in the story it says: "His inability to write disturbed him, made him feel blundering and awkward, but he was practised now in the way this had to be between them, and he succeeded...

...is going to be motivated when they do something and they see the benefit from it. For example, if you going out and go to the beach you are going to want to continue to do so just because it was something that you thought was fun and you got satisfaction out of it. So when it comes to a manager trying to motivate their employees this way it would work. If a person does something and gets a sense of satisfaction out of it then they are going to continue to do so. So if a manager has a system where if an employee does a certain thing that they may get a reward or something to that extent the employee is going to do so. They know that in the end there is a good outcome people tend to do so. Also with jobs with people who work with special needs or want to work with special needs I believe that there is a lot of intrinsic motivation with that. When helping someone do something that they cannot do themselves there is such a sense of happiness that employees are going to continue doing these things. When it comes to extrinsic motivation that is where a person does something because in the end they are rewarded somehow. For example, children might not like doing their chores but in the end they are going to do them because they know that in the end they are going to get rewards, whether it be money or being able to do something. So I think when it comes to managers trying to motivate their employees if they give them a reason to do something they are more than likely going to do so...

...responsible for all the cost and the reliability of the business. No one else would have the responsibility of the business other than myself, this is something that I want to do in the near future and that is what I am going to school for business for. Partnership: If a person or group of people wanted to go in on a business with me than we would be partners in the business. We would pool together and establish a company together and it would be ran as a group or team. This is also something that my friend and I have looked into as our town needs more businesses and we would like to have something that we can run and make money and be our own boss. Limited Liability: Limited Liability: Having signing the papers if something were to happen to the business that I have opened and it was not making any money than they could not come after me for money in the end. People sign these papers to make sure that they have themselves covered just in case something does happen and the business is not making a profit. Joint stock company: I open by business that I have been wanting to in a long time but want to get a start I would ask people to invest in my company with a percentage of the profits that were being made. This is something that I would not do as it is a huge risk not knowing how well the company will end up and you may end up owing more in the...

...According to one way of speaking, that out of which as a constituent a thing comes to be is called a cause; for example, the bronze and the silver and their genera would be the causes respectively of a statue and a loving0cup According to another the form or model is a cuse; this is the account of what the being would be, and its genera – thus the cuase of an octave is the ratio of two to one, and more generally number – and the parts which come into the account. Again, there is the primary source of the change or the staying unchanged : for example, the man who has deliberated is a cuse, the father is a cause of the child, and in general that which makes something of that which is made, and which changes something of that which something is changed. And again, a thing may be a cause as the end. That is what something is for, as health might be what a walk is for. On account of what does he walk? We answer “To keep fit” and think that, in saying that, we have given the cause. Suppose one man thought that there are plans because there are leaves, roots, and stems; another that there are leaves, roots and stems because there are plants; a third that there are plants because there are seeds. Aristotle would say that there is no real dipute here, since each party is bringing forward a factor which is explanatory in a different way. The leaves, root, and stem account for the plant in the way in which bronze accounts for a statue, the plant accounts for the leaves, roots, and stem...

... the healthiest and safest way to lose weight is with diet and exercise. The most important thing is how these things can make life healthier for anyone who wants to lose weight. When trying to lose weight on diet plans and pills can be very pricey when there are other people around to help you. One main thing when concerning these two is the cost of them. Diet and exercise is something anyone can do that is less costly than if you were to purchase diet pills every month. You can change your diet and find healthier food for you to eat instead of sugar and carbohydrates which aren’t good for you. Also starting a daily exercise routine that doesn’t cost a thing if you are doing it at home will make your mind and body feel and act so much better. When concerning diet pills they can be very costly without knowing if they’re going to work or not. It can end up costing you an arm and a leg buying diet pills every month. Spending all of this money on something that might work will be stressful and that is something that is also bad for your health. Another difference between the two of them is something you have to take time out and plan to do each day. You have to make time and find a way to fit it into your daily schedule to get in your workout which is hard for some people to do. Also taking time out of your day to make and plan healthier...

...divided into those which are sought as means to some further end and those which they seek as good as ends in themselves. Obviously some things may be "good" as means to one end and "bad" as means to some other end. Different persons, motivated by different ends, will thus find different things "good" and "bad" (relative to their different ends). More food is "good" to a starving man, but it is "bad" to one overweight. In order for something to be good "without qualification" it must not be merely "good" as means to one end but "bad" as means to some other end. It must be sought as good totally independently of serving as a means to something else; it must be "good in-itself." Furthermore, while one thing may be good as means relative to a particular end, that "end" becomes a "means" relative to some other "end". So a college diploma may be sought as "good" as a means for the end of a higher-paying job. And a higher-paying job may be "good" as a means to increased financial security; and increased financial security may be "good" as a means to obtaining the necessities of life as well as a few of its luxuries. However, if we seek A only for the sake of B, and B only for the sake of C, etc., then there is never a justification for seeking A at the beginning of such a series unless there is something at the end of that series which we seek as a "good in-itself" not merely as means to some further end. Such an "ultimate" end would then be an "absolute" rather than a "relative" good...

...version of yourself. For example people you thought were going to be there forever aren't there anymore. It does not means that people change. It’s just that there role changes according to time or situation. As quoted by Mahatma Buddha “ Everything changes, nothing remains without change”. Life is just like weather sometimes too bad to resist and sometimes pleasant to enjoy. If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living. Don't be afraid of changes, you may lose something good but probably end up gaining something much better. It is true. The only constant in life is change. From the day that we are born we em-barque on the journey of endless change, better known as the journey of life. Our lives are one big cycle with a beginning and end-point, sub-divided into many smaller phases. Each phase is further sub-divided into smaller phases or chapters every person goes through a numerous amount of different phases in their lives. The end of each phase and the beginning of the next one is usually a big change, and sometimes one that is very hard to deal with or get used to. Life is one big...

...morally acceptable an action is. The first maxim states: “Always act in such a way that you can also will that the maxim of your action should be a universal law”. This can be interpreted to mean that only do something if it can be universalised and if it’s something that will always be acceptable for anyone to do. If it can’t be universalised then it is not a valid moral rule. To illustrate this, Kant uses the example of suicide, claiming that it is always wrong because it can’t be made a universal law. He asks us to consider if we would want everyone to take their own life in any situation, even if it is to escape a state of suffering and despair. Stealing would also be considered never to be morally acceptable in Kantian Ethics since it cannot be universalised as well. If it was to be universalised, everyone would be stealing from each other, therefore human relationships would fail because trust is the foundation of human relationships. Furthermore, this maxim is important in order for there to be a harmonious society. The second says: “Act so that you treat humanity, both in your own person and in that of another, always as an end and never merely as a means”. Here, Kant was telling us that we should value every individual and not use anybody to gain something else;...

Similarly in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and Pleasantville directed by Gary ross, the characters don’t understand what can happen when change occurs. In both Catcher in the Rye and Pleasantville change is represented as a beneficial thing, but it can also be frightening. In Catcher in the Rye change is beneficial and frightening. In the novel, Mr. Antonelli talks to Holden and gives Holden advice about what to do with his life. He tells Holden that he can change but he can only change if he wants to. “You’re going...

...Maturity isn’t about age; it is about experience Your experience defines your maturity. It doesn’t matter how old you are, at the end, you can be an old guy and haven’t experience a lot. Maturity is the growth of the inside you. You can’t buy maturity; you can achieve it whenever you want. It is just something that comes in the right moment. A great example of maturity without thinking of age is Lily Owens, the protagonist of Sue Monk Kidd’s book, The Secret Life of Bees. This book is a perfect example because it reflects the high level of maturity a fourteen years old girl has. Maturity comes from different forms, it can be from good experiences or from bad expereinces but at the end maturity is maturity and it is something that someone is blessed with, it is a gift....
