...Ethics Reflection Alicia Zisumbo STR/581 September 23, 2014 Shad Slaughter Ethics Reflection A strategic plan is an important part of business development because it defines the organization’s strategy, decision-making and the path the company takes in order to succeed. The social responsibility an organization has on the community is how it accomplishes its business while it meets its obligations to society and the environment. Ethics plays a strong role in a company’s strategic plan because the public persona will determine if the company is successful or not. Corporations must remember that the decisions made not only affect the company and its employees, but also the stakeholders and the communities that drive the business. A business has an ethical responsibility to uphold the commonly held beliefs of society because it is society that ultimately makes or breaks a business. A perfect example of this is currently being played out in the media regarding the image of the National Football League (NFL) and its stance on domestic violence. The NFL brings in millions of dollars a year from ticket sales, merchandise, sponsorships, and TV ads. It is a very prosperous business to say the least. The NFL has a code of conduct policy that must be followed by its employees (players, coaches, etc.). The Ray Rice scandal is currently marring the image of model behavior in the NFL. As an avid NFL fan, I have been watching this scandal unfold with the start of a new football...

...in Business Ethics and morals are rules on how we as individuals and as a society should follow. These rules, both written and implied, are how we are viewed and judged. This paper will discuss the differences between ethical issues and moral issues, the differences between personal ethics and business ethics, and show how a violation of these rules brought down one of the Goliaths of college football and caused a premature end to the era Jim Tressel at The Ohio State University. Ethics and morals are sometimes used interchangeably. Ethics is defined as a systematic attempt to make sense of our individual and social moral experience, in such a way as to determine the rules that ought to govern human conduct [ (George, 2010) ]. A moral is the distinction of right from wrong. The difference between the two is very slim and marginal. Morals are what define our personal character, whereas ethics lean on the side of how society is supposed to act [ (wisegeek) ]. As close as ethics and morals are, the margin of difference between personal ethics and business ethics is even more narrow. Business ethics is how people conduct themselves in the workplace and how the company produces goods or perform services to increase their overall worth and profits. Personal ethics are principles of good behavior and a moral code of conduct that we use to govern our daily actions [ (Peters, 2003) ]. When these two collide, the individual will have to decide if their personal ethics will be compromised...

...Death of a Salesman As all Americans can attest to, the American Dream is a benchmark that is strived for one’s entire life, as one is constantly trying to find their purpose and figure out how best to achieve prosperity. In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman spends his entire life identifying how he can achieve his personal American Dream. Willy strongly believes that fame is accomplished by being attractive and well-liked, and that it depends very little on one’s work ethic. This is precisely what Miller warned against when he stated that “it’s a mistake to ever look for hope outside of one’s self”, as Willy carries the false conception that if he is well-liked by others, he will realize his American Dream. In Death of a Salesman, Miller uses flashbacks like these as alterations of time that allow the reader to understand why the characters actions led to tragedy, and how Willy’s fate can be avoided if one uses hard work and dedication, rather than popularity, to attain their individual American Dream. Willy’s deranged perception of success is mainly shaped by Ben’s influence, because Ben had the opportunity of becoming rich through his personality and presence, which is exactly what Willy is striving for. Willy frequently immerses himself in flashbacks, in which he converses with Ben, and allows Ben to convince him to the point where he even tells himself “that a man can end up with diamonds on the basis of being liked.” In contrast, Charley attempts to break...

...Match-Fixing: the Culprit of the Loss of Integrity in Italy’s Football Leagues Roxanne Teacher: Dee Submission Date: 31/08/2015 Abstract The purpose of this report is to reveal that match-fixing has occurred in Italy over the past decade and to explain whether the measures taken by Italian government reduce football corruption. Resulting from high profitability and domestic-owned football structure, match-fixing has become an enormous problem. This report also demonstrates two match-fixing scandals in 2006 and 2011, which mechanisms are pursuing sportive and economic results, respectively. According to the European code of conduct, the manipulation of match-fixing is unethical. To protect the integrity of the sport, the Italian government punish the perpetrators heavily and investigate the criminal organisations privately. Owing to this contribution, corruption decreases significantly. Therefore, a conclusion that under the government’s help, Italy football matches achieve its integrity can be made. It is recommended that by increasing the punishment level for the perpetrators, educating football players and founding a well-sourced security department, match-fixing can be tackled. ...as the KKK for example. Our group has mostly examined racism against African and African Americans. We believe the term “African”, in it self, is racist. Do you see anyone calling a white American, a European American? The answer is no. Why can’t we call the group labeled African Americans, Americans? When our group goes to a TCU football game, we cheer for the team as a whole. At TCU a black football player is called a football player. A white football player is also called a football player. If a sport as simple as football can get past discrimination of white and black, how come America cannot? People like Johnny Lee Clary, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela are great examples of attempts to over come black racism. Peter J. Paris makes many great points in his book Virtues and Values: the African and African American Experience. Paris uses leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. to empahsis that troughout the hard times, African virtues and values stood strong. The virtues and values Paris hit mostly on were: Beneficence, Forbearance, Practical Wisdom, Improvisation, Forgiveness, Justice, and Public and Private Ethics. Paris uses many examples to show how King and Mandela practiced and believed in all seven of these virtues and values. By having role models of this stature follow these virtues and values, it made it easier to keep the sacred...

We would like to do research on this topic because it relates to something we want to do in the future. Coaching is a passion of the both of ours, and we want to pursue it. We are doing research on the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU). Organizational Profile The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union started in a Des Moines Presbyterian Church. This organization was founded to serve high school girls better than any other organization had. Basketball was becoming a popular sport for girls in small schools in Iowa in the 1920’s. The Iowa High School Athletic Association decided they would not sponsor girls, so the IGHSAU was born around 1925. In their constitution it states, “The purpose of this Union shall be: To promote, direct, protect and regulate amateur interscholastic athletic relationship for junior high and secondary girls between member schools and to stimulate fair play, friendly rivalry, and good sportsmanship among contestants, schools and communities through out the State of Iowa; and shall be without profit to itself except that it may handle and accumulate funds as herein provided.” They are the only organization in the nation solely devoted to interscholastic competition for girls. Over 70,000 girls in Iowa compete in an IGHSAU-sponsored activity. Stakeholders The stakeholders in...

...theology preached that the Puritans should live a pious and consecrated lifestyle. The doctrine emphasizes work instead of leisure led to the development of the Puritan’s aversion to leisure and sports. However, the followers still participated in their own forms of recreational activities including music, arts, and sport. The Puritans saw it as their duty to spend all their time productively and to avoid all idle time including sport, which was widely considered an idle activity. The only physical activity prevalent in the Puritan way of life was manual labor (Jable, 1976). However, the Puritans began to see sports as a service to God and the means to higher calling. The Protestant Ethic has seven cardinal rules that include time ethic, worldly asceticism, achieved status, individualism, work ethic, goal directedness, rationalization, and goal directedness. These tenets have led to the exaltation of individualism, achievement, and competitiveness in everything especially in sports. Kelly explains that, the church was defensive in regarding to sports, which indicate that religion comes before since and pleasure. however in catholic teaching, sport was part of their life , that makes them more proactive and beneficial, as the protestant did in their society. 3. Civil religion can be defined as the religious values that a country upholds seen through the lens of ceremonial rituals held during sacred days, public rituals, sacred places, and symbols.
