The Feast

1) It was a rainy day when I went to the BGC Feast. It was around 2:00pm when I finished preparing myself, it was raining very hard to the point that I thought that there's a storm. I told myself that I'll wait till the rain stopped. It didn't took 15 minutes when the rain suddenly stopped, I was amazed 'cause I was starting to worry that I might arrived late, due to traffic and all, but instead of being late, I arrived almost 30 minutues early than the designated time. When I arrived at the Fully Booked, I went straight to 4th floor. I peeked at the Top (to the venue of the BGC Feast), I could hear a lively music being played, I was enticed, I wanted to come up but my shyness won over me and so I decided to wait for my friends first. When my friends and I entered the room, I was really nervous, but the music calmed me. In the welcoming part, Mr. Benjamin told us that the guest priest will be arriving late and so he asked us to introduce ourselves to 3 people in the gathering. Instead of just 3 people, I made acquitances with more than 5 people, namely: Mafe, Jason, Ate Celine, Kwen, Kim, Abby and others. It was fun meeting other peoe around my age other than my schoolmates. People there were very welcoming and made me feel like I belong.
When the mass started, I felt a little awkward. I don't go to Catholic masses anymore, other than those held at school, so I'm not that familiar on what exactly to respond on some parts and the lyrics of the songs, they kinda changed the melody of the songs and so I don't really know how to sing it properly. Anyway, I went to a Catholic school before so, I know some of the basic things that are done in a Catholic mass. In the priest sermon, he told us about a boy named "Jep." Jep has an illness and was given food by Father so he could take his medicines afterwards but instead of eating it, he putted it in a plastic bag and, when asked of what will he do with it, he said that because he didn't get money to buy food, he'll just give the food to his little brothers. I was really touched that I almost cried. After the mass, Father prayed for the BGC Feast members because they were celebrating their 1st year anniversary. The members seems very passionate about what they were doing.
After the mass, Mr. Randy Borromeo, discussed about the phrase "Bahala Na." He said that "Bahala Na" has it's positive and negative reasons. It was a nice discussion that made me say, "Well yes, he's got a point." Not that I'm being arrogant or narrow minded or anything, but there were some parts where I don't agree with him, like in the part about donations, maybe it's just because most of the gatherings I attended, they don't usually say that donations are Necessary that we Should donate. Other than that, it was a nice uplifting experience. After the discussion, the first timers were gathered for brief introduction and were given a booklet. It was a small booklet where we could write our dreams. I don't really like the cover picture because if my father saw it I'll definitely be scolded by him cause he's a Christian who believes that such things are against the Bible.
We were also fed at the end. The food was delicious, too bad we needed to go home early, me because I didn't really told my father where I'll go so if I stayed out late I might gwmet grounded. I was a little bit shy and embarrassed at the end because I know that I won't be coming back anytime soon because of my father. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, though a little sad because I don't know when I could go back, but still it was a memorable experience.

2) The thing that I liked the most in the event was the Music, from start to end it never failed to make me feel calm and at home and at the same time lively and passionate. The songs were all song of praises to God so it has this pure and holy feeling. But other than the songs, I liked how the singers sang the songs, the guitarists played their guitar etc. They all seem full of passion, with all those cute funny dances they performed and the smiles in their faces. They made me feel as if, I was somebody that has no worries in life because I have God by myside and people who will be there for me. The music, all in all, made me feel that I belong and that whatever happens, I'm always welcome there.

3) Not really least like but rather least lively. Compared to the other parts, the discussion is was I felt the least lively. The discussions were great but because of the seriousness of some topic it gave the feeling of awkwardness which made me say that it was the least lively and the speaker was not as enthusiastic as the other speakers, like Mr. Benjamin who seems to be the most passionate and thankful in the venue, and the priest, who preached very well.

4) Maybe, because it made me feel welcome and it open my mind about things in life but not in the near future because I'm not really free to attend some gatherings.

5) Yes, I'll definitely recommend it to my friends and relatives because it is an eye opener to those believers and non believers. It could also help them to change some not so good habits that they have which could make them a better person.

6) Yes, I think that it will be appealing if that non believer is open minded, and afterall, thr discussions are not eentirely abouy God, so they could still relate and apply the things being taught there in their daily lives. And also, even if they are non believers, they could still enjoy the music which is something to be appreciated. But if the person is not open minded, whether thay are believer or non believer, and they 'll get offended about every single thing, then it might not be so appealing. The Feast is an uplifting gathering and is something that one could enjoy, they just need to be open minded about things in life.

A Reflection on Babette's Feast

...Babette’s Feast is about two pious aging sisters living an extreme sense of Lutheranism in a small, isolated northern village; their very simple and mundane form of living is challenged when a French civil war refugee, Babette, knocks on their doorstep with a letter from Papin, the world renowned Opera Singer, who in fact was fairly astonished and infatuated by one of the sisters during his initial visit decades ago. The father of the two sisters was a delusional preacher, who believed in the ludicrous idea that for one to attain eternal salvation, one must renounce all physical and sensual pleasure life has to offer them, something that the sisters follow with the most unwavering dedication. Who knew a Stranger from the city could change all that through a 7-course meal. The film centralized on its most prominent image: Food. No image could better fit comparing the joyless austerity of the Lutheran sect of the sisters, Martine and Philippa to what is coming to them after the dinner celebration than the meals. Before Babette’s presence is felt, the village lived a very monotonous, dull and repetitious lifestyle. The sky is gray, the sea even grayer. The sisters sit indoors to eat their usual bowls of dried fish and dull brown mush with the most horrible excuse for bread one has ever seen. As viewers will soon find out, the food is the perfect measuring apparatus of change around the village. Throughout the film, viewers see the daily fare of dried fish cut in half, hanging...

Fancy Feast

...English 102 17 October 2013 Analysis Essay Fancy Feast The Ad targets pet owners and cat lovers everywhere and appeals to their feelings of love, happiness, and warmth at the sight of an adorable cat; the picture shows an elegant Persian cat with a dish (not a bowl) of the food. The cat is perfectly groomed. When a viewer first sees this Ad, with the elegant cat and yacht it makes them feel good that they can afford to feed their feline with such elegance. It does not appear as a cat food Ad. This is a very clever idea. The marketers at Purina know that cats do not read Ad. Cat owners make the decisions about the food they buy. Fancy Feast is targeted to the market segments that are true cat lovers and want the best for their cat. The name alone “Fancy Feast” is a term that cat lovers would understand. One of the other nice things about fancy feast is the can size. The can is smaller than some competitors cans. It is just enough for one meal for one cat. Fancy Feast consistently communicates the message of an upscale product. They do this in several ways. First, they name the product “Fancy Feast”. Then, they market it with fancy names like “Grilled Tuna Fish and Grilled Salmon Feast”. They use a Persian cat to market the product. This breed has an upscale association due to its cost and its appearance. This is a common advertising formula as describe by Roland Marchand in “The Appeal of the Democracy of Good”, it asserts that although the rich enjoy a great variety of...

A Moveable Feast

...Emily Duthu English 210 WW4 A Moveable Feast Paper 2/18/13 Ernest Hemingway: A Moveable Feast The Lost Generations boomed in Paris after World War I, which is where all of the artists and writers relocated. The term the Lost Generations was coined by Gertrude Stein, she had an argument with Ford Maddox Ford when she stated, “You are all a generation perdue,” which translates to a lost generation (Hemingway 61). The writers and artists of the Lost Generation, portrayed in Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, were people who lived a troubled life, but managed to find a way to use their struggles to successfully complete a work of art. Throughout A Moveable Feast, the writers struggle to get by in day to day life. Hemingway expressed through detail the atmosphere in the streets of Paris post war. Alcohol seemed to be a coping mechanism to pass the time during the struggle of the 1920s. “The men and women who frequented the Amateurs stayed drunk all of the time or all of the time they could afford it…” (Hemingway 15) explains the lifestyle in which the people were living during this time. Gertrude Stein was one of the many people who had a strong influence on Ernest Hemingway’s life. Miss Stein played the role of Hemingway’s mentor throughout his writing career. Although Gertrude Stein was not a writer, she was the only opinion that mattered when it came to success in writing novels. Stein was not one to express positive feelings about another’s writing, as Hemingway...

Parris, 2005. © SVEN TORFINN—PANOS Do Global Attitudes and Behaviors Support Sustainable Development? By A NTHONY A. LEISEROWITZ, ROBERT W. K ATES, AND THOMAS M. PARRIS Many advocates of sustainable development recognize that a transition to global sustainability—meeting human needs and reducing hunger and poverty while maintaining the life-support systems of the planet—will require changes in human values, attitudes, and behaviors.1 A previous article in Environment described some of the values used to define or support sustainable development as well as key goals, indicators, and practices.2 Drawing on the few multinational and quasi-global-scale surveys that have been conducted,3 this article synthesizes and reviews what is currently known about global attitudes and behavior that will either support or discourage a global sustainability transition.4 (Table 1 on page 24 provides details about these surveys.) None of these surveys measured public attitudes toward “sustainable development” as a holistic concept. There is, however, a diverse range of empirical data related to many of the subcomponents of sustainable development: development and environment; the driving forces of population, affluence/poverty/consumerism, technology, and entitlement programs; and the gap between attitudes...

Gender Constructs and Imperialism

...Valenzuela Blog "I'm Your Horse in the Night" is a story that blurs the lines of reality and our narrator's dream, putting it into the category of magic realism. The story begins with the setting of our narrator's home, when she gets a surprise visit from her lover. After a hot drunken night with Beto, Chiquita is tortured after the police come looking for him. The police then start breaking her belongings and torture her for information about her beloved. The theme of this story uses a stereotypical female who is only wanting love and a man who is only wanting a bed for the night. Both of our main characters are flat, as we know hardly anything about them let alone their real names. This story is fiction however the events seem all too real, especially to a female reader reading from a female's point of view.  Mrs. Dutta Blog Mrs. Dutta is a heartfelt short story about a woman who moves to America to live with her son's family after their strong suggestion. The point of view this story is written in is third person; as an outsider telling the events. Mrs. Dutta, being the main protagonist in the story, is struggling to adapt to her new life in America. The biggest change that Mrs. Dutta is struggling with is being a housewife stereotype. The most interesting thing about Mrs. Dutta is the subplot containing her flashbacks back home and the conversations between herself and Mrs. Basu.  Being such a round character, Mrs. Dutta shows a lot of progression at the end of the story...

...Holy days are different depending on the religion that you practice. Special holy days are set aside throughout the year, these are to honor the gods and commemorate important religious events (Bilhartz, 86). Other important holidays include the Passover, the Pentecost celebrate the Shavuot, and the Feast of the Tabernacles celebrate the Sukkot (Bilhartz, 86). ...The Effect of the Daily Allowance in the Academic Performance of the Second Year Students of the University of the Immaculate Conception Ay 2012 – 2013 CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction The practice of giving children allowances developed in the early twentieth century when children's purchases of movie tickets, candy, and toys raised concerns about their spending habits. During the Progressive Era (1890s–1920s), allowance advocates recommended giving children a regular but fixed supply of money to inculcate respect for money. Child had endorsed allowances to encourage benevolence and fiscal responsibility. Progressive-era child-rearing authorities joined a much larger chorus calling for new money training regimes in women's magazines and parental advice literature (Child, L.M., 1831). However, despite the benefits gained by the students of having allowance, there are problems and disadvantages present. For example, a student has poor spending habits. They tend to think that this is their money and they can do whatever they want with it. Students have the tendency to spend their allowances on their recreational activities such as, renting a computer unit for fun and games, buying items at the shopping mall, and spending money for the peers. As a study, the proponents seek the effects in line with the daily allowances of students to their academic performance. Statement of the Problem 1. What is the academic performance of the Second year...

The Mona Lisa & the Wedding Feast at Cana

...Virtual Art Trip The Mona Lisa and The Wedding Feast at Cana are two very popular works of fine art, which happen to be displayed in the same room at the Louvre. Even though both of these share a median of oil paint that seems to be where their similarities end. The Mona Lisa is painted on a panel which allows no light at all to come through the back of the image; whereas The Wedding Feast at Cana is painted on canvas allowing the possibility of light to seep through the back. This can actually cause the painting to have a radiant effect. Since the focal point of The Wedding Feast at Cana is Jesus at the center with a glowing halo around his head, this appearance brings our attention back to Him. This is a wonderful place to show that The Mona Lisa’s warmer colors seem to pull more towards the front of this portrait piece while the cooler colors of The Wedding Feast at Cana seem to be further back and there are more people visual. There is a unity to The Wedding Feast at Cana and all of the people, animals, and décor. All of the pieces seem to work in harmony to create union; whereas The Mona Lisa seems to be in more disarray. She has a river in her backdrop which on one side seems to be completely chaotic and on the other side seems to be completely tranquil. The proportion in The Mona Lisa is very dramatic and only apparent if you pay attention to the background. In The Wedding Feast at Cana it is scaled down considerably. It gives a more realistic affect as if you are...

A combination of lights, cloth’s color, decoration of the room, and facial expression are used by Steen in order to express the happiness and joy that people shared and celebrated during Twelfth-Night Feast. In Twelfth-Night Feast, Steen is focused more on the people in his painting instead of the food. His painting is about feast. People have smile in their face and enjoying the time with each other. This painting is made by oil on canvas which makes the painting looks shiny and new even though this painting is done in 1662. Also it makes the painting to look real and impressive. How Fish Cope in a World of Feast and Famine

...“How Fish Cope in a World of Feast and Famine” Samantha Erickson I attended a seminar on “How Fish Cope in a World of Feast and Famine,” given by Dr. Johnny Armstrong. Dr. Armstrong received his doctorate in Ecology from the University of Wyoming with a emphasis in physiological ecology, specifically the adaptation and survival of fish. The study he explained in his seminar was completed in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska and studied Sockeye salmon. He talked about how he studied how the Sockeye ate in patterns where there were no food supply verses times where food supply was abundant. The object of his experiment was to watch the behavior patterns of the feeding of the fish at those different times and how the sockeye dealt with famine and with an overflow of food source. He set up areas in the middle of the streams where he could catch the fish at different times of feeding, or lack there of, and examine the contents of their stomachs. He found that in times where food was abundant, the Sockeye would stuff themselves to absolute breaking point with laid eggs. Then they would keep the eggs in their system by hardly swimming. Doing this they were actually able to not eat for three days in a row before having to eat again. In times where there was very little food, the fish would again use this method of hardly swimming, more just floating up stream to the warmer waters during the day, and travel downstream to cooler waters at night to scrape the bottom of the stream for...

Fancy Feast’s New Flavor for Snakes: Tender Kitten Feast in Grilled Chicken Flavored Gravy

...Sashay Schettler Mr. R English 120 12 September 2013 Fancy Feast’s New Flavor for Snakes: Tender Kitten Feast in Grilled Chicken Flavored Gravy We tend not to drive too deeply into subjects that pit our brains against our hearts, animal human relationships being one. While easy to overlook, these relationships play a big part in our day to day lives, and as I’ve learned not always in a good way. I found out firsthand, while reading Hal Herzog’s Some We love, Some We hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals, how hard it is to see a subject in a new light. I found myself torn between what I thought of as morally right and logically correct. The major argument being, is it morally ok to feed unwanted kittens to snakes? As I write this paper, I periodically glance at the picture I have of my fluffy grey cat Henry. Henry passed away when he had to be relocated to my aunt’s ranch, our house flooded in 2009 and our new condo didn’t allow pets. Now Henry had a cozy life with the Schettlers and on the ranch. Yet my aunt claims to this day, that he died of a broken heart. I, however sweet and sentimental the thought, argue that he died because my mom accidentally let him go a couple of turns in the dryer… Henry was always a fighter; I rescued him from the woods, out of a litter of two kittens he was the only survivor. His mother and sister did not make it out of the woods, but Henry wasn’t giving up that easily. After the tragic incidents...
