...In order to accomplish that, the titration lab was conducted. First, using a pipet, 10 ml of the base was placed into a volumetric flask. Next 6 drops of the pH indicator, was added into the base. After, the burette was filled up with the known acid, vinegar, up till 50 ml. Using the stopcock, the acid was slowly added to the base, after every few drops of the acid, the colour of the base would change into a green, and the base solution would get mixed. The same process was repeated, until the point, where the green colour did not disappear after the base solution was mixed, but instead the colour of the solution turned into a light green. Once the endpoint was reached, the volume of the acid used was recorded. Afterwards, the base was dumped into a sink, and the volumetric flask was cleaned. The entire process was recorded another two times, and the results were also recorded. Using the collected data from the lab and calculations, the concentration of the base was...

...evening Board Members, All of us at Kaylex Motors want this company to succeed. Being a comparatively new auto business, we need to ensure we build a safe, cost effective auto that consumers trust; (the Kaylex “Renna”.) This board discussed a “cost-benefit analysis”. We at this time want you to agree with the need for added safety modifications. Let’s not make the same mistake as Ford Motor Company; The Ford Pinto Case. Ford Pinto is a car that was associated with fuel-fed crash fires. In the early 1970’s this compact vehicle showed a likelihood of catching fire when hit from behind at low speeds. (20mph). Ford needed to make a decision. Its car was in compliance with industry standards, so no laws were broken. But Ford’s own research had proved the car was deadly. Being aware of design problems with the pinto that made it more susceptible to crash related fires, Ford performed a cost benefit analysis and decided NOT to recall the Ford Pinto. It was cheaper, to pay families compensation for the loss of their family members, than to modify each car. Since last meeting, there has been considerable information gained regarding safety measures needed in our new model, RENNA, due to start production next week. We proposed extra time be allowed for modifications to design. This would cause a delay in production, but would be the wisest, most beneficial decision. We have alternatives in mind that estimated cost per vehicle would be $10.00. * This company could just raise the purchase...

...of people have lived in a deep cave since birth, never seeing the light of day. These people are bound so that they cannot look to either side or behind them, but only straight ahead. Behind them is a fire, and behind the fire is a partial wall. On top of the wall are various statues, which are manipulated by another group of people, lying out of sight behind the partial wall. Because of the fire, the statues cast shadows across the wall that the prisoners are facing. The prisoners watch the stories that these shadows play out, and because these shadows are all they ever get to see, they believe them to be the most real things in the world. When they talk to one another about “men,” “women,” “trees,” or “horses,” they are referring to these shadows. These prisoners represent the lowest stage on the line—imagination. A prisoner is freed from his bonds, and is forced to look at the fire and at the statues themselves. After an initial period of pain and confusion because of direct exposure of his eyes to the light of the fire, the prisoner realizes that what he sees now are things more real than the shadows he has always taken to be reality. He grasps how the fire and the statues together cause the shadows, which are copies of these more real things. He accepts the statues and fire as the most real things in the world. This stage in the cave represents belief. He has made contact with real things—the statues—but he is not aware that there are things of greater reality—a...

Over the next few pages, we will look at these arguments. In the end the decision is yours. Are They Worth The Cost: Sprinkler systems save lives. Andrew Hanes In the world of construction, a battle rages over the use of residential fire sprinkler systems. This battle is being fought in state legislatures pitting the construction community against those called on to protect the lives in the community. Much evidence exists for their use. Over the next few pages, we will look at these arguments. In the end the decision is yours. 08 Fall 08 Fall In recent years, there has been a push to require all new, private residential structures to contain fire sprinkler systems. One of the biggest proponents of this requirement is the United States Fire Administration. In their official position statement, the USFA states: “It is the position of the U.S. Fire Administration that all citizens should be protected against death, injury, and property loss resulting from fire in their residence. All homes should be equipped with both smoke alarms and automatic fire sprinklers, and all families should have and practice an emergency escape plan. The USFA fully supports all efforts to reduce the tragic toll of fire losses in this nation, including...

My Ethical Dilemma: When I was going into my senior year of high school I was faced with an ethical dilemma that could have either ruined my father’s business or a friendship I have had since I was five years old. During the summer of 2010 I began working for my father at his Italian restaurant where he was the chef. After about a month of working with pretty good pay my friends started asking me if they could also pick up a job. When I noticed that a dish washer position was available I immediately told my friend of about twelve years and he began working with me five times a week. The weekdays at the job were good because the restaurant was not as busy but when the weekend started it became apparent that my friend was not fit to work such an intense and fast paced job. After about a month of my dad observing my friend and seeing if he could develop into an efficient dish washer for the restaurant he realized that he just was not cut out for this kind of job. This was when my father told me that it was my job to make a decision about whether to keep him or to let him go. It was my responsibility to fire my friend to better the efficiency of the restaurant but it was holding me back because...

...company would follow to ensure the well-being of the enterprise. Pre-incident plan for changes the company should take in advance of a disaster. First, our company needs to develop a team which should consist of someone from each department. The next order of business would be to organize, develop and administer a preparedness program that should include training, procedures, etc. With EPLAN, the main pieces for a disaster program would be around data. This company data is its key. This does not just contain customer data, but each individual’s data and their work needs to be backed up. Also they will need a plan for backing up all human resources filing and information, billing and finance and marketing data. First steps would be for the team to assemble a list of what are some of the hazards and assess the risks of losing this data. Second they would need to conduct an impact analysis plan to see if this will hurt the business. Third examine ways to prevent hazards from happening. With a company such as EPLAN, the team would evaluate all data and where the data is housed. Some servers are currently overseas but most data is stored in the office of Farmington Hills, MI. The server room is not protected by any Fire protection walls. The company data for employees are on their computers and are currently not being backed up onto the server as most of the employees work from home. The only employees that are backed up on the server are out of the Farmington Hills...

...March 8, 1989, 8:03 am, a four-year old child is playing with fire in a rear bedroom of his home. He lights a piece of wood on fire next to a wall heater and the fire then spreads to nearby clothing. The family gets out safely, but the real danger is just beginning for the responding firefighters. The fire department arrives and two veteran captains, along with another firefighter go in to attack the fire that started in the rear bedroom. What these three firefighters don’t realize is that there is still fire above them and the heat and gases are building up. Suddenly, flashover occurs. All three firefighters are caught in it. They are not safe. When the fire has been brought under control, the three firefighters are located in this single-family dwelling. It is noted that all three men are located less than six feet away from some form of exit, whether it was a window or a door. All three lost their lives that day. Some experts have said that four-year olds are too young to understand the difference between right and wrong. This is where “they” are wrong! Juveniles (anyone under the age of eighteen) set over 98,000 fires each year. Over one million children are injured due to fire and three thousand die from fire-related deaths annually. It has been determined that twenty-five percent of children who die in a fire incident have started the fire themselves. The average property loss caused by juvenile arson setters is three billion dollars and there is...

...Donald J. Giffels is a civil engineer and president of a engineering consulting firm. His firm was under a contract to some work with installing equipment at a facility to train firefighters dealing with fire crashes of airplanes. Jet fuel was recently replaced with liquid propane because it contaminated the soil to simulate fires. Giffels was concerned about the lack of design in areas crucial to safety. No design analysis was submitted either. He contacted the designers for a justification in approving the design. Giffels contacted another engineering firm that had installed similar designs and they had confirmed the cause for concern about safety when looking at the design. A mechanical engineering firm was asked to do a design study but was turned down because of liability fears. Therefore Giffels firm asked the government to be absolved of any responsibility in case of mishaps do to inadequate design. The firm refused to proceed with the installation until safety issues were addressed. The government agency agreed and brought in three other firms to fix the safety issues. Step 2: Define the Stakeholders - those with a vested interest in the outcome The Government agency would be a stakeholder. Where they have overlooked the safety designs and failed to submit an analysis. Giffels’ civil engineer is a stake holder also who would have felt the guilt of ignoring the design although his firm is only required work for installation. The training firefighters would be...
