...Flawed or Not?: That is the Question Shanelle L. Todd and Kayla L. Thompson Brenau University Flawed or Not?: That is the Question What if I told you that the US Naval and Marine corporations funded a what they called, “prison experiment” in 1971, with a goal of finding that the prison environment produces aggressive attitudes? Zimbardo conducted this experiment in the basement of the Psychology department at Stanford University. He took regular everyday college students like you and I made some prisoners and some guards, locked them up in a very small area, and evaluated their behaviors. The question is, how were the guards and the prisoners distinguished between? Now this is where the word evil comes in. In order to make the environment a real “evil” environment the guards wore hats and badges while the prisoners wore nothing but frowsy dresses. This was Zimbardo’s bright idea of an evil environment. So, does perception come into play? Does what each person perceives as evil environments make for a trustworthy study, setting out to support such a claim? Ultimately, did Zimbardo adequately reconstruct a fair representation of a true prison setting or did Zimbardo exaggerate that too? Well, according to two documentary professionals, this study did support that evil environments produces evil behaviors stated not only by Ratnesar’s, but also by Sheere. The funding corporations were kept a secret from the general public for more than 20 years. Just recently on...

...Alejandro Delgado Professor Wolf British Literature February 23, 2012 A Flawed Justice System When a society has a problem and it needs to be dealt with in a fair manner, the society turns to its judicial system, which lays down the rules of how to go about the case and determine the punishment. There were many different societies that enforced a law system according to their needs and population, and this goes the same for the era. Ben Jonson and Jonathan Swift are two very popular and well respected authors of satire, who have made stories that made society question the judicial system that they carried. Ben Jonson satirizes the judicial system in his play Volpone, a story of an old but sneaky man who manipulated people into giving him things for the possibility of becoming the heir of his grand fortune. Jonathan Swift mocks the way England is carried out politically in Gulliver’s Travels, the story of Lemuel Gulliver who travels by sea to four different lands and learns of their habits whilst comparing them to England and opening his eyes to the flaws of England. One of the most crucial points in the story of Volpone would be the case of Bonario and Celia, who are being falsely accused by Corvino, Voltore and Corbaccio, who are currently competing for the position of becoming Volpone’s heir. Jonson mocks the system by simply giving full control to the men of power and portraying the avocatores as very gullible men. Before entering the court, the...

...In the two videos, Bill Nye is asserting his belief that Evolution is the scientifically correct answer to how we arrived at where we are today. He is also attempting to convince others that a belief in anything other than evolution is not only detrimental to the person holding this belief, but also to the country at large. He is attempting to convince his audience that without a basis of evolution, any attempts to understand the world at large will be fundamentally flawed. Billy Nye is making the assumption that only a person who believes in evolution will be able to become a good scientist. His reasoning is flawed however, because he does not correctly distinguish between fact and theory. Evolution has not been able to be fully proven as...

...WHY THE BCS SYSTEM HAS TO BE CHANGED There are many controversies in the world of college athletics, such as the idea of paying athletes and unethical recruiting. However the most discussed problem is the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS for short. The BCS is a way of deciding a national champion in college football. Teams are ranked one through twenty-five, with the top two teams appearing in the championship game. There are five BCS bowl games in total; the Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, Orange, and the National Championship. The Bowl Championship Series take many factors into account in determining the rankings of teams. The most important factors are wins and losses, followed by strength of opponents. This is why teams from weaker conferences, like Boise State, who have comparable records to the top teams are left out of the National Championship game. Boise State is from the Mountain West Conference, which is considered to be one of the weakest in all of division one. This team routinely goes undefeated or suffers one loss, but is passed over by teams from stronger conferences. Boise State usually dominates the other teams in its conference, however their victories are seen as that impressive because of the level of competition that they face. This is part of the argument against the BCS system, that it does not give teams from lesser conferences an equal opportunity to win the national title. `One would think that having an undefeated record would be enough to earn a...

...Is UN Peacekeeping seriously flawed? Hello fellow students, I am one of the debate leaders this week. I hope we can all bring some valid points to this debate, enjoy… Firstly I believe to fully understand what peacekeeping is, we should explore the meaning “peacekeeping” and how that is relevant to this debate. The Collins World English Dictionary defines peacekeeping as the maintenance of peace, esp. the prevention of further fighting between hostile forces in an area. The broad consensus on the term “peacekeeping” is a little different however - non-violent intervention, being the voice of reason and bearing witness to (and in the way of) violent and oppressive acts; tend to be what the average person would recognise as peacekeeping. How does this align with the current operational expectations of the United Nations in regards to peacekeeping? The UN commenced peacekeeping duties during the Cold War as a way to resolve conflict (aid the resolution) by observing the peace process as a neutral party. Since that time the United Nations Security Council has approved and engaged peacekeeping troops all over the world into many civil and international situations. However is this visual form of peacekeeping effective? Does having a military force on the ground that is committed to the protection of the civilian population in a war zone or facing inevitable oppression really work? In theory the answer is yes, frankly I think you would have to be inhumane to say otherwise. However...

...Alexander Hamilton The Flawed Underdog Alexander Hamilton was not very famous, but that does not mean he was not impactful. At the time, America had not yet regained its financial footing, but Hamilton made contributions that no one thought a poor kid from the caribbean could. Alexander Hamilton was one of the most important founding fathers. He proved that you don’t have to be a perfect individual to be a legend. His brilliance truly shows in his incredible writing skills and his determination as the first Secretary of the Treasury. He left a legacy of being a flawed hero. Alexander’s childhood and early life were unpleasant. His father left his family when Alex was one and his mother died of sickness when he was 12. Afterwards he moved in with his cousin who unfortunately committed suicide. Then a hurricane ravaged his home, with Alexander being able to write an account of it. People were so impressed by his writing skills, which were acquired by the large amount of reading...

...Breed Specific Legislation: The Flawed System By: Dogs have been considered a man’s best friend for decades and the numbers to prove this do not lie, 59.5% of American households have a pet dog (Weise, 2001). With this data in hand, would it be fair to say America loves its furry four legged friends? Somewhat. A topic that is picking up steam in America is Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), and it is starting to create unnecessary controversy. Attempting to remove specific breeds from entire communities based on fear, is unjust. We as a country need to start looking deeper into this issue and decide who the real culprit is: the animal or the owner. BSL is defined as a group of laws passed that regulate a certain breed’s ability to reside in a community. The breed catching the most heat currently is the pit bull. One of the issues with this is defining what a pit bull is. There are so many variances on what characteristics define these dogs. It has come down to any dog with a big head and a broad shoulder is in fact a pit bull. They are all profiled as aggressive, unpredictable, malicious animals. But, upon researching the history of these dogs in our country, you will find quite the opposite. They are of English decent, brought here by English immigrants. They were originally bred from Bulldogs and used as hunting dogs. In the early 1900’s, they were most known for being multi-purpose family dogs, with a reputation of protecting their family’s children (Kendrick, 2012)...

...For Greece Austerity alone isn’t doing it. Many people continue to propagate the fantasy that Greece is some Socialist Utopian dream gone wrong. The truth is that Greece will be used for Generations to demonstrate the erroneous belief that Conservative Economic Principles are fatally flawed. , saving your way to the goal is dependant upon a stable income. It becomes a flawed fantasy that you can save your way out when every month your income is less than the month before. At some point, you have to have more money coming in. It is like the argument that we don’t need to develop new energy sources, because we can get by with efficiency. Efficiency is fine so long as production remains stable, but if production falls off, then efficiency alone won’t solve the issue. It’s a combination, efficiency, and development that will see...

[Jayno Aki-Siler (TA)] The Death Penalty: Is it a Flawed System? PHI103 Informal Logic – Week 5 Final Paper Instructor: Galen Johnson December 16, 2012 -1- 2 Death Penalty The Death Penalty: Is it a Flawed System? People have many arguments against the death penalty, and most citizens do not believe that it is a discouragement for the crimes that it punishes. American societies that use capital punishment do not find that they have lower crime rates than those that don’t 1 use capital punishment. Most people would still not accept capital punishment even if it did reduce the crime rate. This indicates that capital punishment is focused on the financially deprived, and targets those who can’t afford to pay for a good lawyer. Research shows that people with little or no money get the highest penalties in society. A lot of people have no respect for what they do and care very little about their jobs as well as other people. A lot of these same people are running our criminal justice system. This same racial discrimination in the United States has entered into our legal system making capital punishment a mistaken and flawed program. If these kinds of people are to continue to operate our criminal justice system, then the death...

...In Act 5 Scene 2, Shakespeare enriches our understanding of Othello’s flawed character through considerations into the fatalistic relationship between manipulation and jealousy, and its eventual culmination into Othello’s descent into insanity. The scene opens with an emotional and dramatic soliloquy from Othello in which he marvels at Desdemona’s beauty and attempts to validate his supposed honourable intent in murdering her. This passage is significant in augmenting the reader’s comprehension of Othello’s emotional conflictions as demonstrated through his constant oscillation between a yearning for vengeance and his lingering feelings of love. Othello’s experiences of internal struggle is seen in the repetition of “It is the cause” (5:2:1,3)....

...On top of exceptional students getting denied, less qualified students such as legacies, athletes, and minorities are being accepted into prestigious universities, contributing to the flawed system. Rather than admitting students based on their potential to succeed and personal attributes alone, universities are often admitting slightly inferior candidates simply because their parents attended the school or they want to increase their diversity population. In A is For Admission, Michele Hernandez mentions some of these discrepancies when explaining that legacies, students who have a parents that attended the university, have a forty percent acceptance rate into Dartmouth in comparison with the typical ten percent acceptance rate (183). Additionally, Hernandez describes athletes have a lower minimum GPA and ACT/SAT than the admitted class (172) and African Americans and Hispanics have a much higher acceptance rate whereas students from Asian descent have increased difficulty getting admitted into Ivy League schools (Hernandez 198)....

This analysis will utilize Dr. Ross Pigeau and Carol McCann’s model to evaluate the dimensions relating to Harris’ Competency, Authority and Responsibility (CAR) and to assess the overall balance and effectiveness of Harris’ command. The CAR model was deemed most suitable to dissect pertinent aspects of this complex and controversial commander, allowing for the necessary depth of analysis into his abilities, responsibilities, beliefs, actions and reactions over a specific timeframe. This paper will illustrate that Harris, although highly skilled in many areas and having demonstrated impressive successes at the helm of Bomber Command, had a singular and seemingly intractable approach to war – to obliterate Germany’s war production capacity by area bombing its cities. This inflexible approach inhibited his...

...Angeliene Pax Professor Daniel Johnson History 165 16 November 2014 Analytical Exercise: Communism Why does Lenin think that traditional democracy is flawed? How does he suggest that Communism offers an alternative solution? What does he see as the ultimate stage in the development of Communism? Lenin was born into the middle class and was obsessed with Marxist doctrines. He formed the Bolsheviks, the majority faction of the Communist Party. The Bolsheviks established war communism, they seized grain from peasants, introduced rations, nationalized all banks and industry, and required everyone to work. Lenin believed that traditional democracy was flawed because to him traditional democracy was a state that had the minority ruling over the majority and that minority was limited to the people who exploit capitalism, only for the rich. He then suggested Communism as an alternative solution because it eliminated capitalism; there were no more social divisions, and there were no more restrictions. Lenin argued when the working class finally overthrows the ruling class and establishes a...

...Homer wrote about the Odyssey around 850BC and I think it reflected the society of that time greatly. I think the biggest idea of The Odyssey was the suffering. Since in Book 19 page 403, it revealed that “let his name be Odysseus… the Son of Pain, a name he’ll earn in full.” We could tell that throughout the whole book, the ultimate purpose of Odysseus’s adventure and suffering was to return home. He endured so much pain which lived up to his name and matured through all that he overcame. So that through suffering, he became the hero the ancient Greek admired and advocated, but he still remained a flawed being. The principle thing Odysseus learned was that God can control fate and he was destined to go home. In book 12, Odysseus’s crewman ate the cattle which disobeyed his orders of not eating the cattle while he went off to pray. They later died of eating the Sungod’s finest cattle since the crewmen at the same time disobeyed god. (Page 281-282) And what was interesting was that God put Odysseus to sleep while the crewmen ate the cattle. So God gave the people free will to decide what to do, but at the same time let it happen while Odysseus could have saved them. So I may say that the God made the crewmen die. The end of the book was the most amazing part to me. When Odysseus and the avengers for suitors were fighting, they only stopped fighting because the Gods would be angry. They were not actually in peace but pretended to be in order not to enrage Gods. I think...

...The crucible is a novel written by Arthur Miller, based around the Salem witch trials, which he reflected his own personal experiences into. Around the time of writing the novel Miller, was subjected to the McCarty trials of the 1950s which sole purpose was to destroy communism by questioning either those suspected of it or those who may have information regarding it. The protagonist of story John Proctor, is himself subjected lies within his town, regarding witchcraft. He and many others are thrown into a freefall of squirting due to the accusation placed by a group of young girls Proctors character is a many-sided, he shows strengths throughout the play, including his loyalty to his wife and friends, but shows flaws because of his guilty pleasures which are seen through his relationship with Abigail Williams, and although his pride seems to be a noble feat of his, it is his honesty which inevitable defeats him in the end. One of Proctors flaws as a character is his relationship with Abigail Williams. A man from a theocratic age lives by the laws of god, and his relationship with Abigail Williams is anything but holy. “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I came near” indicates the temptation Abigail was to Proctor, and how he gave into its persistence. The description of proctors actions, which are not detailed are still able to show the motions he performed which indulged his fantasy, such as the word “clutched”. This gives...
