The Flowers

The story takes place in the South of the USA. An indication of that is that Myop’s family is famers; lots of people were farmers in the south. Another indication is that they are black and probably poor since they get water from a spring. There are two settings in the story; the farm and the woods.

Myop the girl in the story lives on the farm. The farm is where she feels comfortable and can live in her childish life full of innocent. At the farm there is a henhouse and a pigpen which she runs around and makes a beat with a knobby stick at the fence and sticking randomly to the chickens she like. As it said in the text: “She was ten, and nothing existed for her but her song…” That sentence describes the girl perfectly. She is a black ten year old girl who lives in a world with no fear and with no such thing as racism.

The other setting of the story is the woods. If she had followed the path she used to walk with her mother nothing would had happened. But when she made her own path she stepped out of her own peaceful world. The further she moves in to the woods the gloomier it becomes. She has defiantly stepped out of her peaceful world when she stepped smack into the cranium of a dead man.

The flowers have a big symbolic value in the story. They represent her innocence and ignorant world as a child. When she steps on the skull she begins to wonder but she still hasn’t found out that her childhood is ruined. Then she takes pink rose and see’s the remains of a rotted noose. She sees the shred of the noose overhanging a branch from a great oak. That’s when she laid down her flowers. Her safe peacefully and ignorant childhood had come to an end. She has seen how cruel the real world can be.

The seasons are also very symbolic. There is a sudden change from summer to autumn and from a warm and innocent world to a rough and cold world with racial persecution. That’s what the seasons symbolize; the transition to the real world.

One of the themes at the story is the black people’s condition in US. How they are treated and that lynching is happening. Another theme could be how it is for a child to grow up and realize how cruel and filled with treats the world is.

A message this story could have is that people need to open their eyes. They need to see how the afro Americans really are treated and accept that it’s a problem. They need to look out of their peaceful neighborhood and take a new path. Then they might discover, like Myop did, how the real world is. That could especially be a message to the people in the Northern USA who doesn’t know about the situation in the south or are ignorant of it. For example like in the movie “Mississippi Burning”.

...FLOWER AMONG FLOWERS Flower among flowers, soft bud swooning, that the wind moves to a gentle crooning. Wind of heaven, wind of love, you who gladden all you espy; you who smile And will not sigh, candour and fragrance from above; you who perhaps Came down to earth to bring the lonely solace and mirth, and to be a joy For the heart to capture. They say that into your dawn you bear the immaculate soul A prisoner —bound with the ties of passion and rapture? They say you spread Good everywhere like the spring which fills the air with joy and flowers In April time. They say you brighten the soul that mourns when dark clouds gather, And that without thorns blossom the roses in your clime. If then, like a fairy, You enhance the joy of those on whom you glance with the magic charm God gave to you; oh, spare me an hour of your cheer, a single day of your career, that the breast may savour the bliss it knew! The 48-line verse talks of a romantic love for a girl, which is not surprising because Rizal had a lot of girlfriends. It seemed as if this was a personal poem because of the use of the word “I”. The metaphor of a flower is obviously a girl who is more beautiful than all the girls in her group that’s why it’s entitled Flower among Flowers. She is young like a “soft bud”. And when Rizal used onomatopoeia with the wind “crooning”, he was talking of how the flower makes the things it touches, the wind in particular, sing of love. The girl is perfect: beautiful and has...

Flower Essence

...motivated by different feelings. Yet these feelings are motivating human in different ways. Our mind can lead us to reach our goals, in other words, we are motivated by reason and intelligence. But desires and passions can also motivated us powerfully, yet in a different way that reason and intelligence do. The Australian Aboriginals have always used flowers to heal the emotions and minds, as did the Ancient Egyptians. There has also been a very long tradition of use of Flower Essences in India, Asia and South America and they were also very popular in Europe in the Middle Ages. A popular, holistic healing alternative, flower essences are sun-infused solutions that possess flowers’ subtle vibrational energy imprint. Unlike herbal remedies or aromatherapy’s essential oils, flower essences mediate their healing without pharmacologically active molecules. Representing a higher vibrational octave of the plant’s herbal or molecular properties, flower essences energetically restore balance on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. There is no biologically active molecules essentially exist in a flower-essence solution. Flower essences’ mind-body-and-spirit healing is difficult to explain with traditional biomedical precepts. Mind-body-and-spirit perspectives have, in fact, been integral to most healing traditions throughout history. In Western medicine, however, a philosophical schism grew between spirituality and healing as church authorities deemed spirituality off...

The Flower Fed Buffalo

...The Flower-Fed Buffaloes Explore how either The Flower-Fed Buffaloes (by Vachel Lindsay) or Report to Wordsworth (by Boey Kim Cheng) powerfully conveys feelings about human destruction ? Uses: - Symbols - contrasting visual imagery. - tone In the poem called “The Flower – Fed Buffaloes” written by Vachel Lindsay. The poet uses literally techniques such as visual images, tone and symbols, in order for her to convey a strong image about the human destruction of the natural world. The poet uses visual imagery that opposes one and another, in order for her to create this image of destruction of nature by mankind. At the beginning of the poem, before humans intervened, the countryside was “blooming, tossing” and the “flowers lie low’. These words make nature have an ambiance of calmness, zen, peacefulness and harmony as nature is not disturbed by anything. But this visual image will soon change, as suddenly everything is “swept away by wheat’, meaning that this peacefully countryside is intervened by human activity. This creates an image of nature suddenly being attacked and confronted with mankind and its intentions. The changing of fields into wheat plantation is an example of one of many mankind’s’ intention (this being colonization and industry). The author also uses contracting tone in order for her to convey feelings about human destruction. Like with the visual imagery, the tone of poem is very happy and serene, as nature is free to do whatever it...

Anatomy of an Orchid Flower

...Orchid Flower Despite the astonishing diversity found in the thousands of wild species and man-made hybrids, orchid flowers show an unmistakable family resemblance. Orchid flowers are generally bilaterally symmetrical—only a single imaginary line can be drawn through a flower to create a mirror image. A typical orchid flower has three sepals (the outer segments that protect the bud before the flower opens), alternating with three petals. The petals and sepals may be similar or not, showy or inconspicuous. The middle petal, which is always opposite the column, is usually quite different from the others. Called the lip or labellum, it comes in a variety of shapes, depending on the species, and can be wavy or fringed or covered with hairs or other structures. The labellum often serves as a landing pad and attractant for insect pollinators. University of Chicago Press Journals. (2009, December 28). Orchids' sexual trickery explained: Leads to more efficient pollinating system. ScienceDaily. Retrieved December 3, 2014 from www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091217183442.htm new study reveals the reason why orchids use sexual trickery to lure insect pollinators. The study, published in the January issue of The American Naturalist, finds that sexual deception in orchids leads to a more efficient pollinating system. Flowers for Algernon

...Flowers for Algernon Is knowledge the key to happiness? Does the fact that you know almost everything, complete your life? Or does it make you distant to your friends and family? These are some of the main questions Daniel Keys raise in his prizewinning fictional novel “Flowers for Algernon” from 1966. The Novel is about the mentally challenged Charlie Gordon, who will do anything to learn, and become ‘a smart person’. Charlie accepts the terms of an experiment, which will triple his IQ, even though he is not told of the consequences of the experiment. The novel “Flowers for Algernon” is written in the diary form, and the story features a first person narrator called Charlie Gordon. The novel is combined of several progress reports that show the current intelligence of Charlie. As we follow his everyday life, we get detailed information about his increase in artificial intelligence. Throughout the story the reader almost gets a feeling that there are multiple narrators telling the story. Nevertheless the sudden huge growth in grammatical skills is not simply because of another narrator expressing the story, it it’s merely due to the fact that the experiment triples Charlie’s IQ. This experiment takes Charlie’s writing skills to a point, where it’s almost flawless. Having this in mind, the story in a way switches narrator three times. The story starts of with Charlie before his operation, where he’s not exactly mentally gifted. Actually he would be referred to as a mentally...

Determining the Effectiveness of Sugar as Flower Preservative

...Determining the Effectiveness of Sugar as a Preservative for Flowers An Investigatory Project for School Year 2014-2015 In Partial fulfillment of the Physics Subject Researchers: Salvethlyn Himaya Reambonanza Ma. Carina Cassimira Enopia Silverio Serion Submitted to: Engr. Mylene J. Lagahit Teacher I. Introduction a. Background of the Study "Beautiful" and "sweet-smelling" are two common terms that describe fresh flowers, and explains why so many of us like to place flowers in our homes. Having flowers in our homes adds color and a soft touch. In addition, the presence and scent of flowers gives us a psychological boost making us feel happier and livelier. Flowers certainly do help brighten up our day. However, fresh cut flowers do not last long as they typically wilt after a few days.  There are a few ways to help flowers stay fresh for longer periods of time, once they are cut. One method is to cut the stem of the flower at an angle with a sharp knife and immediately placing the cut flower in lukewarm water. Cutting a flower stalk at an angle exposes more of the stem, allowing for a larger surface area to come in contact with water. Leaves that are under water should be removed. Interestingly, the removal of rose thorns will hasten the wilting process of roses. Another commonly used method is to add sugar and vinegar to water. Sugar is thought to provide the nutrition required by the flower, while a few drops of vinegar helps prevent bacteria from contaminating...

Symbiosis: Relationship Between Flowers And Bees

...Symbiosis is what is called the relationship between flowers and bees. Bees go to flowers to try to collect pollen to take back to their hives, in this process they accidentally pollinate flowers. They go to flower to flower trying to collect pollen, while doing this they may accidentally pick up pollen from one flower and drop it on another flower, which means they transfer the pollen made by one flower of one plant to the flower of another plant, this results in the formation of seeds. Besides honey, pollen is one of the only other things bees eat. Bees also receive nectar from the flowers, which they then use that to make honey. But how do bees manage to be so efficient in their quest for nectar? At Britain's University of Bristol a scientist...

Flowers For Algernon Analysis

...If you were given the chance to increase your intelligence, would you? Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes focuses on Charlie, a man who surgically increased his intelligence. In my opinion, the operation improved Charlie's life because of his mental ability, emotional development/feelings, and understanding of others and the world around him. Charlie's life improved because of his mental ability did increase but it did eventually regress. The story shows that Charlie's mental ability increased because before the operation it said, "He said now sit down Charlie we are not thru yet," (page 1, paragraph 3) and after the operation it stated, "How was I to know that a highly respected psychoexperimenalist like Nemur was unacquianted with Hindustani...
