...After years of government corruption and neglected infrastructure, Puerto Rico has finally collapsed and is in desperate need of help. Help they know, they will receive if they were to become the 51st state. According to the New York Post, Puerto Rico’s government has been inept at taking care of their precious infrastructure. Even before hurricane Maria, their power and water systems were crumbling due to being outrageously outdated and they were up to their eyeballs in debt, 118 billion to be exact. According to CNN, people were leaving the island at a historic rate with an “average of 230 people leaving a day”. This was due to essential resources shutting down. Hospitals no longer had the funding they needed to help their people and schools...

According to HuffPost Latino Voices, 51% of Puerto Ricans would like to keep their relationship with the United States, leaving 49% of the population wanting to claim independence. Puerto Ricans have been denied the right to Vote for President of the United States, in which who controls limitations and laws that these citizens have to live by. In this paper, I would like...

...Identification. Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, during his second voyage, naming it San Juan Bautista. The Taínos, the indigenous people, called the island Boriquén Tierra del alto señor ("Land of the Noble Lord"). In 1508, the Spanish granted settlement rights to Juan Ponce de León, who established a settlement at Caparra and became the first governor. In 1519 Caparra had to be relocated to a nearby coastal islet with a healthier environment; it was renamed Puerto Rico ("Rich Port") for its harbor, among the world's best natural bays. The two names were switched over the centuries: the island became Puerto Rico and its capital San Juan. The United States anglicized the name to "Porto Rico" when it occupied the island in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. This spelling was discontinued in 1932. Puerto Ricans are a Caribbean people who regard themselves as citizens of a distinctive island nation in spite of their colonial condition and U.S. citizenship. This sense of uniqueness also shapes their migrant experience and relationship with other ethnoracial groups in the United States. However, this cultural nationalism coexists with a desire for association with the United States as a state or in the current semiautonomous commonwealth status. Location and Geography. Puerto Rico is the easternmost and smallest of the Greater Antilles, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Basin to the south. Puerto Rico is a crucial hemispheric access point...

...UNITED STATES BECOMES A WORLD LEADER The United States had a long tradition of territorial expansion. Gains of adjacent territory in the 19th century—the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the areas won from Mexico in 1848, and U.S. expansion across the continent—all enhanced American stature. More recently, the defeat and removal of Native American tribes by federal troops had opened the West to farms and ranches, speculators and corporations. A. THE ANNEXATION OF HAWAII In the 1880s a monarchy governed the Hawaiian Islands, but western powers, including the United States, Britain, and Germany, had significant influence in Hawaii’s economy and government. American business interests dominated the lucrative sugar business. Angered by U.S. domination, Hawaiian islanders in 1891 welcomed a native Hawaiian, Liliuokalani, as queen. Liliuokalani attempted to impose a new constitution that strengthened her power. American planters responded by deposing the queen in 1893. Proclaiming Hawaii independent, the Americans requested U.S. annexation. President Grover Cleveland stalled on the annexation treaty; his representative on the islands reported that native Hawaiians objected to it. Under President William McKinley, however, in 1898, Congress voted to annex the Hawaiian Islands. In 1900 Hawaii became American territory. B. THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR: CUBA AND THE PHILIPPINES United States involvement in Cuba began in 1895 when the Cubans rebelled against Spanish rule. The Cuban...

...In Latin America, the popularity of the sport is growing rapidly and the most recent of talent into the NBA is migrating from Latin America. The cultural popularity of the sport was growing exponentially and is well documented in China with the likes of Yao Ming and Jeremy Lin who are Asian sensations. With Latin American backgrounds integrating into the game of basketball, I wonder how these international translations are in turn changing the game we see at home. In Latin America, where the climate and geographies are so much different than the one in the United States, we find growth in basketball. Though the NBA in Latin America is growing, it is still not a hit in Central and South America. Though whenever you go either it is Latin America, China, America, etc… there is always someone playing the game. Even in the likes of Mexico, they are mostly known for militant based political revolution than anything else, but basketball courts do exist. The courts might be used for other things like farming during the day, but you will always see some kid playing and working on his game. Just like what I do when I am in my hometown hooping outside of my house, no court just the concrete and the hoop I have next to my garage. The growth of basketball throughout Latin America region is unexpected, only because they compete for national attention in their number one sport soccer. Basketball has to compete in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and...

...Running head: CONTAINER TERMINAL EFFICIENCY Container Terminal Efficiency Joshua K. Hodgin American Military University CONTAINER TERMINAL EFFICIENCY With a projected 186% [ (The Agile Port Efficient Marine Terminal) ] increase of containers moved through ports by 2025, terminals are forced to relook at how efficient cargo is being handled. Even though there are required methods by law, container terminals can be more efficient by more effective inspection processes and container handling improvements. Container terminals of today consist of robust equipment and processes that enables cargo to be transported throughout the world. Using intermodal transportation practices, the terminals very effectively transfer cargo between three different modes of transportation; ship, train, truck. The question now what improvements are being made to make processes more efficient and effective while staying in line with current laws? We will explore different innovations of terminal processes, future designs of transportation equipment and enhanced cargo inspection processes. Container terminals have the responsibility to move cargo as quickly and efficiency as possible and the Agile Port System is helping ports do just that. Innovations of Terminal Processes “An Agile Port is a marine terminal or system of terminals capable of accommodating varying cargo quantities and types while minimizing operation interruptions within the terminal” (US Department of Transportation...

Latin America's political, historical, and cultural developments of this century are studied. Latin America | Today This course proposes to study the events of today by tracing the social, political and economic structures of the past. On the one hand, the region under study is comprised of a dramatic variety of cultures, geographies and politics. On the other, it shares a history of colonization from “discovery” to independence to modernity based on its particular geographic and historical location. In order to interrogate this conjunction, we will pay special attention to the social groups that are often marginalized from the pages of “the official history”: Indigenous communities, Afro-Latin organizations, gay, lesbian, and trans activism, immigrant groups. We will pay special attention the discourses of belonging and identification that mark their relationships with the region, as well as the ways in which “Latin” America becomes a concept in relationship with these groups in the context of globalization. Thus, race, class, gender, sexuality, and coloniality are...

...Teams in Production and Operations Management Shericia Bonnett Dr. Victoria Figiel BUS 508 – Contemporary Business 11/12/2011 In order for a retail business to be successful, they must order products from a reputable company that produces quality products and that will only happen if the production company is organized and able to supply the needed products. In order for the products to be produced and delivered on time, the production process must consist of planning, routing, scheduling, dispatching, and follow-up in order to correct any problems and make the necessary adjustments (Boone, 2011). Effective communication is crucial throughout the production process and managers and employees should possess quality communication skills. Communication is basically an exchange of information through messages whether they are relayed in person, over the phone, or via email and it is crucial that everyone involved comprehends the message being relayed (2011). From the production process to the delivery and sale of the products, communication is a key instrument that will eventually cause a retail business to become profitable. In today’s society, there are many retail businesses that exist and offer a variety of products and services for a consumer to select from. Some retail businesses sell food, home improvement items, patio furniture, clothes, sporting goods, and other commodities. Kroger’s, Publix, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, and Wal-mart are leading retailers that...

...Individual Work-Week 7 Melissa Moore Everest College, CPO4003-2 Instructor DePlato 5/29/14 Borders can be real or artificial, but they are basically the lines that separate geographic areas. The borders of the United States for instance, consist of the East and West Coasts which means that we are not a landlocked country. Due to their geography, they would be relatively difficult to penetrate. We also have our Northern and Southern borders which are land borders of considerable length. These borders also contain some very remote areas that can be hard to patrol in order to ensure that these borders are secure. “The northern border, though, is typically seen as a less likely spot for illegal crossings because it borders on a rich country as opposed to a relatively poor one. In these ways, geography determines which U.S. borders are most likely to be crossed illegally” (Inknparkchick, 2012). In most countries, borders are protected by a military or law-enforcement presence of some sort and these countries protect their borders for various reasons. “Borders - particularly national borders - affect travel and migration. People can usually move freely within their own country’s borders, but may not be allowed to cross into a neighboring country” (National Geographic Society, 2014). Each individual country will have its own rules as to who is allowed to travel, work, and live within their borders. Many countries will issue work permits or visas to...

Many are separated by water, desert, or mountains from the center of power and adjoin neighbors that may support separatist objectives. - Note also that many islands are subject to devolutionary processes: Corsica (France), Sardinia (Italy), Taiwan (China), Singapore (Malaysia), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Jolo (Philippines), Puerto Rico (United States), Mayotte (Comoros), and East Timor (Indonesia) are notable examples. ...Thank You Julie! Good morning Capt Stancy, Mr. Bevington, Capt Goyet, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month. It is my distinct honor to speak to you today. Hispanic culture is deeply intertwined with the history of this Nation. We live on the same side of the world with the largest Spanish speaking population due to our proximity to Mexico, Central, South America and the Caribbean. So it is important to recognize the contributions of the Hispanic culture as well as other cultures to celebrate and acknowledge how the history, culture, values and traditions of the United States were and continue to be shaped by the make-up of its ever changing population profile. When I started to think about what I would say, it occurred to me that perhaps I should do a little research and review history instead of presuming I know everything about my heritage. I am glad I did because I learned many facts that challenged my own understanding of history. I want to share some of these facts with you today. On September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1989 by Congress to a month long celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and...

...amenities and green-space. For the natural amenities, “the participants with geographically-referenced data were assigned an amenity score based on a natural amenity index developed by the USDA Economic Research Service. For the green-space, it was measured using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). b) The strengths of the survey method is that the results can be generalized if representative sampling is used. In addition, a survey can be used when it is not possible to manipulate variables for ethical or practical reasons. The data the researchers analyzed was done by the (BRFSS) and is a “multi-ethnic nationally representative sample of adults (one per household) from all the 50 states of America, the District of Colombia, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam to track trends in health conditions and risk behaviours in the US.” This yearly survey was time and cost efficient. Most importantly, you can interview a large sample group and get information from as many people as possible. This particular survey sampled a very large group of people. This means that we can see a more accurate view of the affects exposure to the natural environment has on individuals of different backgrounds. Also, the fact that the median cooperation rate for the BRFSS survey in 2010 was 76.9% while the final response was 54.6% shows the researchers had an extensive amount of data to formulate a solid conclusion (page 79, first paragraph of methods). The weaknesses of the survey method...
