...place that does not exist. Many interpret Utopia as a standard for an ideal society that would be most desirable to achieve. Lois Lowry is the author of The Giver, a book that can be argued as providing the community as a “Utopia”. Thomas More’s book sets the standard of a Utopia, but many argue that The Giver fits these descriptions. I believe that the community in The Giver is not a true Utopia. The community in The Giver is not a true Utopia, because it has a different geography than what Thomas More’s description described. According to Thomas More’s features of a Utopia, it is an island (pg. 1 Summary of Ideas). In The Giver, Jonas often talks about “land beyond the community”. On page 106 of The Giver online, Jonas mentions that the land beyond the bridge is the same, flat and well ordered land as the community’s, therefore proving that the community can’t be an island. As a rule, a community that isn’t an island could have problems with its borders, so it is not considered a true Utopia....

...The Giver Essay “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain, it’s the loneliness of it.” The Giver is based on many different rules in one little community. This paper will be about three different rules in that one little community. One rule in the community is you can only have two children in one household, one male and one female. The reason why they have this rule is because, so every family is the same and no family is different. An example of this rule from The Giver is Jonas’s family. Jonas’s family consists of his dad, his mom, himself {Jonas}, and his little sister Lily. Another example from my life is my family, my uncle Eric, my aunt Stacy, my younger cousin Ethan, and his younger sister, also my cousin Paige. That is...

...In the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry Jonas experiences develop a theme over the course, The Giver by teaching the reader that freedom comes at a cost. In the text he falls off his bike and scrapes his knee while holding gabe. Although some people may believe freedom doesn’t come at a cost Jonas experiences show otherwise. Freedom is expensive. In the text it states, “Jonas lay awake, tortured by hunger”. Jonas wants freedom but while he is looking he ends up starving, and it also means that while trying to get freedom and you don’t have a plan to buy food then your going to be lost. Another piece of evidence is, “Jonas ankle twisted, and his knees were scraped and raw, blood, seeping through his trousers”. While he looks for freedom he falls...

...Have you ever ran away from home? I haven’t ran away from home. Those sentences pertain to the story because at the end of the story Jonas and Gabriel run away. In the end of “The Giver” Jonas and Gabriel run away because The GIver told them to, Jonas doesn’t want Gabriel to be released, and Jonas loves Gabriel. First and foremost, The Giver told them to. The Giver told Jonas to get Gabriel and to cross the bridge with him during the night. The Giver said “take the new child and go to the bridge and cross it”. The Giver wanted to see if Jonas could help the new child by taking him out there. Jonas didn’t want the new child to be released so he wanted to do something, so The Giver told Jonas to do that. In addition, Jonas doesn’t want Gabriel...

...Given Freedom “Freedom is one of the most important thing for us”. Who is against to the statement. After the cold war, freedom became the world’s main value and many countries adapts the value. Contrary to the world today the society in “the Giver” (Lois Lowry, Harper Collins) is far from the notion of freedom. In that society, people’s lives are strictly regulated. People there cannot chose their jobs and families, and these things are determined by the “chief elder”, who observes everything in the society and consider the most suited job for all citizens. What is more, a lot of things that have risks, like animals and climates except sunny, that can make differences each other like...

...The ideals that should be honored in my utopian society are freedom, equality, and justice. In a perfect world, freedom is a must-have. It allows people to express themselves and choose their own paths in life—like what job they want, how many children they want, who their spouse is, etc. For example, in The Giver, choices aren’t a part of their community. All of the important life events are chosen for you, like your occupation and your family—you don’t get a say in your own life. This is one of the reasons why I would value freedom in my utopian society. If people got a say in what their life was like, happiness and individuality would be promoted because each person will go down a different path and experience different things. Although there is a possibility of making a wrong decision, that is part of life and makes people...

...Why would you want to live in a society where you can't have emotions, your own kids, or your own mate that you love? Does living in an Utopian society where the Chief Elders make all of your choices sound good? Why live with them, when you can have more freedom living in a democratic society. Living in a democratic society with freedom is better than living in an utopian society because you get to have feelings, you can learn from your problems, and choose your own job. In the book The Giver ,the Utopian society had to take this medicine so they can't have emotions like love, happiness, sadness, anger, or even pain. But in a democratic society you can feel all of the emotions. In a Utopian society the Chief Elders pick your mate for you,...

...have just read the first line of this amazing novel The Giver. 1993 was the year that this amazing author Louis Lowry published this book. Here is a little about it! It all started with this 11 year old boy called Jonas. This boy gets a life where every one is the same, nothing is different! Can you imagine that? There are birthmothers who give children to the community and then they are assigned to family members. No one can choose what to do. You may be thinking if everyone obeys the rule? Well, yes everyone obey the rule if not they get released. Want to know how they get released, well wait and find out! As I mentioned before everyone in the community is the same but still they have some advantages and some disadvantages. The elders (the people that control the community) decide everything whether you are going to be an ENGINEER or FOOD DELIVER. “What is important is the preparation for adult life and the training you’ll receive in your assignment”(pg.22). Here we see that the elders control every aspect of their life. You may be asking how do they get their assignment? Well, all the community gathers in one place to attend to the ceremony there the kids from ages 1-12 are on stage to receive...

...Freedom. In our society, freedom is used everyday. We make our own choices, what to eat, what time to go to bed, or even choosing what occupation you will receive. In The Giver everyone who lives in the society is well protected, it is a Utopia, but freedom does not exist. I believe it is not worth giving up my freedom to live in a perfect world. I need freedom, it is a necessity to live. Without freedom there is no reason to live. The Giver is based in a community full of sameness, sameness is the concept of everyone being similar. “‘Oh.’ Jonas was silent for a minute. ‘Oh I see what you mean. It wouldn’t matter for a new child’s toy. But later it doesn't matter? We don’t dare let people make their decisions.’” If humans didn’t have freedom, it would affect our lives so much. Freedom determines the outcome in various situations....

...Imagine your whole life has been decided by elders. the person you marry, who your children are, and what your job is. You do not have the freedom to choose how you live. Life in the community, where everyone was the same, was boring as gray. All of the dwellings and clothes were very basic. You made no choices, unless you were the elders. The novel The Giver written by Lois Lowry shows the theme of avoiding a deal of pain if we are willing to sacrifice freedom. So you must ask yourself, Pain or Freedom? What if every time you fell or scraped your knee you wouldn't feel the emotion, pain. The Community do not feel pain. Whether it is physical or emotional. There was no feeling of pain. For example,"It's the choosing that's important, isn't...

...individuals come from a diverse background, and they have learning styles and personality traits that vary. It is a hard task to meet each learning style during one project, but individuals need to learn to adapt. For example, a visual learner must learn to adapt to writing notes during a lecture. In this paper I will develop strategies to help me, as a logical learner/thinker, communicate and collaborate well with other learning/personality styles. The Visual Learner The learning style assessment states that I am a logical learner; this means that I like to brainstorm ideas and create an outline. Being in an online class, I would be able to create an outline of ideas that the team members have come up with and post them on the computer for everyone to see. Individuals are able to post questions and responses on the computer; this is a strategy that will help visual learners keep up with what is going on. The Kinesthetic Learner A kinesthetic learner must be able to work everything through hands-on experience. I believe allowing this learner to be the one to type up the final version for an assignment would be beneficial. This will allow the individual to read the final paper while typing it up; therefore gaining knowledge from hands-on experience. The Interpersonal Learner This learner will definitely benefit from being in a learning team. The individual will be able to bounce ideas off other members, and then an individual with an organizer personality would be able to...

...Communication and Collaboration Strategy Paper Gen/200 Communication and Collaboration Strategy Paper Communication plays a very important role in our life. If one were not able to communicate effectively, it would be very difficult for them interact with others, learn, and express their feelings. One of the bigger challenges one may face, is how big of a role personality styles play when it comes to communicating to a group of people. A few of the personality types that will be covered in this material include: giver, thinker, and organizer. Also covered will be the following learning styles: verbal linguistic, intrapersonal, and personal (Axia, 2007). The success of a team environment is determined by the ability of these styles being able to work together. Verbal-linguistic individuals usually love learning new languages, reading, and writing. They are usually very effective at being able to communicate through speech, and are very good at teaching others and explaining things. They are usually best taught through lectures, writing, and reading. A person who possesses interpersonal intelligence, are usually good at relating to and understanding the views of others. They usually communicate well to others in a group setting, and like to ask lots of questions. These individuals enjoy the feedback that they get from questions, and learn easily in a group environment. The final intelligence I will cover is intrapersonal. Intrapersonal individuals in a lot of ways...
