The gift of giving; whether this be time, money, or materials is beneficial for the receiver, but can also benefit the giver. I had read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein as a young elementary student but the meaning and moral of the story was never more relevant until my sophomore year of college. The book was given to us to read before we went out to play a basketball game last basketball season. It was January 2015 and we were preparing to play a critical conference game against Marian University. Coach made his way into the locker room to give us an intense pre-game speech but this time we were told to read a book instead. Initially all of us were confused on why coach would be asking us to read The Giving Tree before we went out to …show more content…
The tree gives and gives until she has nothing left to give and she is nothing left but a stump in the ground that the boy can sit on. Okay, so as a child, this story evoked sadness. I could not help but be sad because I felt as if the young boy robbed the tree of everything without ever sacrificing anything. My attitude was completely changed when I read this book again before playing our game. I was sitting in my usual seat on our black leather couch in the locker room, Carlee to the left of me and Erika to the right of me, I read the words “Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did. And the tree was …show more content…
We ended up winning the game against twelfth ranked Marian University that game 75 to 61. How has reading The Giving Tree for a basketball helped shape some of my thoughts and actions this past year? Well since that night the words and themes of the book have resonated with me. I have a passion for truly investing in the lives of my teammates. Not just the usual “hey how are you?” but actually giving time to taking adventures and having meaningful conversations with them. This has stemmed from what seemed to be reading a frivolous children’s book for one of coach’s pre-game speech. I want to be like the tree every single day not only to my teammates but also in my faith walk. The Lord has blessed me in many ways and every single day my goal is to give every ounce of what I have back to

Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree

...The Giving Tree was published in October 7, 1964. This book is fifty-three years old. The Giving Tree is about a boy who goes to the tree very often when he was young and when he gets older he goes to the tree less often. Every time the boy went to the tree he always asked for something and the tree gave the boy something always and always shared stuff while the boy did not. In the Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein uses personification to show that to give is more than to receive. Tree is personified to show that the tree is like a parent. The tree is being personified to show that the tree is like a parent because when the boy comes to the tree the boy wants something and the tree gives the boy what he wants or the necessary stuff to reach his...

Scrap of Time

...“A Scrap of Time” An Emotional Take on the Holocaust The work of Ida Fink, the author of “A Scrap of Time” has been characterized as cold, showing a lack of compassion, and stating facts which only appeal to your sense of logic. While Fink could very well be stating facts, she draws the reader in with emotion. From the title of the story to the very last sentence. I, in the next few paragraphs will open your eyes and show you how Ida Fink is undoubtedly appealing to your sense of emotion and not just simply describing a day in the life a Jew in World War II. It’s not that simple. Can someone possibly write a story about the Holocaust and not have an inkling of emotion? The answer is no. The title “Scrap of Time” to me is an emotional title, meaning a seemingly small part of a big, drawn out time in her life. Yet she holds onto it. Keeping this scrap in the back of her mind as a reminder of what once was. An unwanted scrap of the character’s life, a life of segregation, humiliation, and anguish. The narrator recalls, “We had different measure of time, we different ones, always different, always with that mark of difference that moved some of us to pride, and others to humility. We, who because of our difference were condemned once again, as we had been before in history, we were condemned once again during this time measured not in months nor by the rising and setting of the sun, but by a word- “action,” a word signifying movement, a word you would use about a novel or...

Gender Preselection

...other words sex preselection gives parents the opportunity to choose their baby’s gender. Here in the Netherlands, choosing the sex of a child is authorized and validated by the Dutch Health Council, but only on medical terms, for example in cases of hereditry (heere-dit-trie) diseases. However, in many countries sex pre-selection is permitted, irrespective whether there is a medical reason or not. So if you could choose the gender of your baby, what would you choose? A boy or a girl? Well, you don’t even have to answer my question, because I do not think, we people have the right to decide on this matter. It is unethical and immoral to do so. Therefore my thesis is the following: Parents should not be able to select their baby’s gender! I will start of giving a number of arguments that supports this thesis. Then I will discuss some arguments that supporters of sex pre-selection give. And I will end with a conclusion. First of all, whether parents had a girl or a boy has always been left up to nature to decide. To date, no-one has dared interfere with the genetic workings of the body, mainly because the technology did not exist to do it. But now, with the dawn of the twenty-first century, that technology has arrived and mankind is faced with the decision: whether or not to “play God” and manipulate the gender of their child to suit their preferences. I think we should let nature to take its course! After all, humans have been reproducing and multiplying for...

Justification and Internalism

...in certain instances of its use our intelligence is not defective…(Prichard, 1950. p. 94) Prichard also characterized the point in terms of knowing by reflection: …if there is to be such a thing as knowing that we know something, that knowing can be attained only directly, we in knowing the thing knowing directly, either at the same time or on reflection, that we are knowing it. (Ibid.) Knowing by reflection is knowledge one achieves merely by thinking about the matter at hand. Further, even if one reflects a good deal, Prichard holds that the knowing thereby achieved is direct knowing, presumably because one need make no inferences from one belief to another in the activity of reflecting. Prichard is here endorsing the KK-thesis, i.e., the thesis that knowing implies knowing that one knows. Philosophers who endorse what we can call knowledge internalism accept something akin to what Prichard endorses, though their main focus is slightly different. That is, knowledge internalism concerns not knowing that one knows, as in Prichard, but rather knowing or being aware of that on the basis of which one knows. For example, imagine that you know that a flock of Canada geese has landed in a neighborhood park in your city; and suppose that you came by this piece of knowledge on the basis of and as a result of some testimony from another person who has just returned from that park. Then knowledge internalism would be the view that in knowing that the geese are in the park, one also...

The Interpretation of the Definition of the Word Courage

...Essay Topic: The interpretation of the definition of the word “Courage”. Essay Questions: What feelings does the word courage provoke in you? How courage is traditionally interpreted? How important is courage for any personality type? Thesis Statement: The definitions of this word are numerous, but since the world around us changes the definitions change, too. For instance, if we talk about the liberty of word we can define “courage” as the person’s ability to say what he thinks on this matter. Courage, what feelings do you get when you hear this word? Do you feel Inspiration, Admiration, Respect, Fear, or maybe nothing at all? To some people courage is just another word, and for others it means so much more. The word courage comes from the Latin word coraticum. The root”cor” means heart. Then after the world entered English through French it was completed with an English suffix- age, which expressed action or the result of action. So the word courage really means an action that comes from the heart, in other words it is a noble action. How is this word used by contemporary people? The main usage of this term of this term of the word is, to describe people who have a type of mind that allows them not to think rational, and face danger without fear. Which is also referred to as bravery or boldness? This word is usually used when talking about man, because from its original form it was considered to be more of manly virtue. The definitions of this word are numerous, but...

Waiting for Godot

...ANALYZING THE CONCEPT OF DERRIDA’S DECONSTRUCTION IN SAMUEL BECKETT’S WAITING FOR GODOT ANALYZING THE CONCEPT OF DERRIDA’S DECONSTRUCTION IN SAMUEL BECKETT’S WAITING FOR GODOT Deconstruction is a literary theory and philosophy of language derived principally from Jacques Derrida's 1967 work Of Grammatology. The premise of deconstruction is that all of Western literature and philosophy implicitly relies on a metaphysics of presence, where intrinsic meaning is accessible by virtue of pure presence. Deconstruction rejects the possibility of a pure presence and thus of essential or intrinsic meaning. Due to the impossibility of pure presence and consequently of intrinsic meaning, any given concept is constituted and comprehended from the linguistic point of view and in terms of its oppositions, e.g. perception/reason, speech/writing, mind/body, interior/exterior, marginal/central, sensible/intelligible, intuition/signification, nature/culture. Derrida says that one member is associated with presence (more highly emphasized) while the other is associated with absence. He proposes “difference” - a perpetual series of interactions between presence and absence - where a concept is constituted, comprehended and identified in terms of what it is not and self-sufficient meaning is never arrived at. Derrida's theories on deconstruction were influenced by the work of linguists such as Ferdinand de Saussure and literary theorists such as Roland Barthes (whose works were an investigation...

Reconstruction of Arguments

...RECONSTRUCTING ARGUMENTS Deductive and Inductive Here we are to learn the techniques for PART I, Making a Critique- i.e., argument reconstruction, by doing the following “steps”: 1. Read the discourse; 2. Number and Bracket arguments; 3. Write an Index of Claims; and 4. Tree-Diagram the arguments. What is critiquing? Benjamin Samuel Bloom (1913 – 1999) - the creator of Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956) following a framework for categorizing educational goals: Taxonomy of Educational Objectives; revised in 2001 by Anderson & Ktrathwohl) with collaborators Max Englehart, Edward Furst, Walter Hill, and David Krathwohl as A Taxonomy for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment. This taxonomy consists of six major categories: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation.  The categories after knowledge (containing subcategories) were presented as "skills and abilities," (manifested by a person’s intellectual abilities as well) with the understanding that knowledge was the necessary precondition for putting these skills and abilities into practice. As revised in 2001, these cognitive skills were rather treated more dynamically by using verbs and gerunds to label their categories and subcategories (rather than the nouns of the original taxonomy as knowledge objectives).  These "action words" describe the cognitive processes by which thinkers encounter and work with knowledge. They are (from the lowest thinking skill): Categories &...

...ABSTRACT Critical Chain Project Management: An Overview Christopher Aitken Director: Elisabeth Umble, Ph.D. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce to the reader Critical Chain Project Management, which is the application of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) process to project management. Eli Goldratt describes the process in the book Critical Chain. Applying Critical Chain protocol will improve the projects due date performance and the quality of deliverables, whatever the project or circumstance. To prove these claims this document explores specific case studies of recent implementations of Critical Chain. It then goes back to look at the history of project management and some of the innovations that led to Critical Chain, including an in depth look at Theory of Constraints. It concludes by exploring the TOC approach to causing change in thinking processes and how this would be done for Critical Chain. This document is written to be accessible to any reader regardless of the level of prior exposure to the Theory of Constraints. ...island. It is the end of the third day and Rainsford has managed so far to evade Zaroff, but now he is closing in on him…) “At daybreak Rainsford, lying near the swamp, was awakened by the sound that made him know that he had new things to learn about fear. It was a distant sound, faint and wavering, but he knew it. It was the baying of a pack of hounds. Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking. An idea that held a wild chance came to him, and, tightening his belt, he headed away from the swamp. The baying of the hounds grew nearer, nearer, ever nearer. On a ridge Rainsford climbed a tree. Down a watercourse, not a quarter of a mile off, he could see the bush moving. Straining his eyes, he saw the lean figure of General Zaroff; just ahead of him, Rainsford made out another figure whose wide shoulders surged through the tall jungle weeds; it was the giant Ivan, and he seemed pulled forward by some unseen force; Rainsford knew that Ivan must be holding the pack in leash. They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked franctically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He...

Art, Freedom

...Art, Creativity and Freedom ''Art for Art's Sake'' view orginating from the early 19th century is a French slogan. It is also the slogan of Aesthetic Movement. Its original is ''l'art pour l'art'' in French. It appeared as a reaction to '' Art for Poeple's Sake'' view and its claims about art's being didactic, directive and morally appropriate. According to the this idea, purifying art from didactic, moral or utilitarian factors is necessary. The supporters argue that art has no certain aim and the artist has no certain duty. They want to isolate art from everything that borders art's freedom and originality. They think that to educate people is not the job of the artist's. The artist should only focus on improving his creativity, originality and art. Briefly, they argue that the "Art for Art’s Sake" view sets the artists free, and enables them to be more creative in art, it helps their pieces of art being purified from the restricted doctrines of ordinary life.Edgar Allan Poe, Théophile Gautier, Walter Pater, Oscar Wilde are some of the important followers of ''Art for Art's Sake'' view. Preserve and Reserve

...Preserve and Reserve William Williams Liberty University Abstract The preservation and reservation of the environment is not fully responsible by one person, one group, one country, or better yet, one religion. Yet as Christians, God specifically tells us in is word to protect everything in our environment. In the exercise of our faith, we should take the necessary steps to preserve and reserve our surroundings. Preserve and Reserve Living the life of a Christian comes with many challenges which ultimately become decisions that shape our walk with Christ. Some may see us as hypocrites because they don’t understand our faith and do not wish to look past our faults. Beyond any of this, it’s our job to live in harmony with nature and learn from it. By reading and understanding the word of God, it’s clear that He expects us to be caretakers of his creation. In addition, He expects us to appreciate and protect all animals and the environment. To fulfill this mission doesn’t require perfection, but an honest heart and effort will get the job done. As a Christian, in an attempt to preserve or restore our environment, we should do the following: plant and eat from trees, eat less or no meats, and dispose of human wastes more properly. Planting and Eating from trees. In the bible Leviticus 19:23, New Living Translation, reads “When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden. Do not eat it”. This...
