People have said, “The hard way ends is in the easy way.” Throughout The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, Rex the father does not follow this advice. He is a caring yet neglectful father. He is a smart man that could have gone far in life but chose to be lazy and get in fights for the people he works for. Rex ended up becoming an alcoholic father and starting to be absent with his family because of it. He would never make the right decisions and ended up having him or his family pay for it. In this memoir, readers see that Rex Walls unrealistic dreamer that changes from a thoughtful, more caring father to being a selfish and absent one.
In the memoir readers notice that Rex is a unrealistic dreamer. Rosemary has to leave to renew her teaching license and left Jeannette and Lori to take care of everyone, so she left them money. They only had so much money and Rex ask Jeannette for money, “In a few more days he asked for a twenty”(Walls 210). This shows Rex is selfish because he would rather have beer and cigarettes then his family being able to eat. His family now is starting to realize that he cares more about himself than his them. Lori is trying to get a scholarship so she made a sculpture of Shakespeare, but Rex didn't like Shakespeare because he thought he was a fake. He then smears off the face of the sculpture, “ He studied the sculpture, then suddenly reached over and smeared off Shakespeare's mouth”(Walls 227). Rex is also selfish by ruining Lorie's sculpture of Shakespeare because he hates Shakespeare. Lori now sees that Rex doesn't care what she wants. Therefore deeper in the story Rex is becoming More selfish and is just thinking about
