Have you ever paused to consider your future, and which path you would take? A life where you take risks or a life where you play it safe? Many people pursue security and attempt to live a typical life without succeeding or failing. In the novel, The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls didn’t want a part in this, she had the mindset of no other. She wanted to explore, take risks, and accomplish something extraordinary. She managed to live an exciting and adventurous life where she was able to make her own choices. It didn’t matter to her that she would fail. It mattered that she was able to choose her decisions for herself and not having other people do it for her. She was bullied, pushed to the brink, but still she never gave up on living an adventurous …show more content…
However, those who take risks see multiple paths open to them. For example, in The Glass Castle, the position Jeannette reached at the end was due to her own choices and taking chances. Freedom allowed her to take risks and it is the key to everyone’s future. It gives people a sense of experience and not relying on others for assistance. Jeannette always wanted to wander outside the box and didn’t want to settle for being “average.” Everything in life depends on the path you take. A “protected” trail usually leads you to a dull and an unsatisfying experience content with what you’re given throughout it. A daring life can lead you to an unexpected future, and it gives you the power to make your own decisions. Even the legendary poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, stated “Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better” (Emerson). In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette took the peril of moving to New York with her sister (Chapter 6, Page 245). If they had lived a protected living on 93 Little Hobart Street, Jeannette might have never graduated from Barnard, an Ivy League College. If Jeannette never went for opportunities that were open and thought outside the box, she would have never written this memoir. She would have been condemned to living a tedious existence, restrained by her two parents that always wanted to get through by living an average

...Mrs. Scheller Engl 1302-7 5 December 2017 The Glass Castle Essay In the book the Glass Castle there were several things that were brought to light that i had never known about or thought about. Although this book was a roller coaster of emotions it is definitely one of my favorites. One thing that really stood out to me was, when Jeanette's mom was continuously selfish throughout the novel. When “Bryan yanked the covers back. Lying next to Mom was a huge family-sized Hershey chocolate bars”(Walls, 174). This just struck me the fact she would hide and eat a candy bar when her kids had nothing to eat or when she had expensive jewelry and land worth loads of money and chose not to sell any of it this causing malnourishment of her...

Prince Of The World And The Cathedral Façade Summary

... Annie is writing her paper on the Röttgen Pieta. She has many points of interested in her research. One involves material. Rather than marble, this sculpture is made of wood and she suggests that this could be a connection to German nationalism that will become more prevalent later on in history. She also hopes to understand why Pieta images gained popularity. To do so, she is going to look at the context in which this image was made, particularly at the rise of the Franciscan order and their teachings. Annie said she might look into comparing this work to other Pietas that were made around this time to find similarities and differences. She is also interested in how these works functioned as a reaction to iconoclasm, a point she is still delving into. Samantha- Castles and Cathedrals of Norman England Samantha wanted to look at the way castle architecture related to cathedrals in towns where the two structures were geographically close and begun within 30 years of each other. Looking at the aesthetic qualities of these structures she wanted to know if certain features were included for symbolic or defensive purposes. To answer her question, she did three case studies of castles and corresponding cathedrals in Durham, Norwich, and Lincoln. Each town had varying degrees of connection between their two structures, but Samantha was able to ultimately conclude that the crenulation we see on cathedrals suggests influence from castles on cathedral decoration. This...

Homelessness/Poverty in the Us

...Miranda 1 Jacqueline Miranda Ms. Klidonas English Writing Structure- E2 6 May 2011 Homelessness/ Poverty in the United States A very important issue in our country is homelessness and poverty. This is important because poverty and homelessness have psychological effects on individuals. We can see this issue in Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle because the Walls family is always moving around. Homelessness affects your appearance severely. The Walls family doesn’t have enough food to go around. Research shows that the rate of homelessness and poverty is high. The government is trying to reduce the rate of homelessness and poverty. Many Americans have gone through poverty or will go through poverty at some point in their life. In my paper, I will attempt to inform you that homelessness and poverty is a topic which should be taken seriously. Homeless ness and poverty have psychological effects on individuals. Forensic Scientists

...answer. Generally they provide evidence in court to support the prosecution or defence in criminal and civil investigations. The evidence can be provided in the form of a written paper or the scientist might be called to testify during trials or hearings as an expert witness on evidence or laboratory techniques. There are different areas of forensic science such as chemistry (which involves crimes against property), biology (which involves crimes against people), and toxicology (which majorly involves drugs). Being a forensic scientist involves many tasks, they go to crime scenes to investigate and then plan what evidence they need to collect. Afterwards they return to compile, catalogue, and preserve evidence to help solve the case. They then do a sketch of the scene so that they can later reconstruct the crime scene to re-examine, test, and analyze the evidence. Now that the evidence has been assessed, it can be discussed between specialists and a report can be written based on their conclusions. The report is used during trials or hearings; however, the forensic scientist can also be called upon to personally testify as an expert witness. This career, which used to be an unknown field has now become a very trendy occupation thanks to the many popular investigative television series such as Bones, Castle, and Dexter. Some key forensic scientists that contributed to make this field so well-known are Mathieu Orfila and Bernard Spilsbury. Orfila was involved in the bringing of chemistry...

The Getty Center

...New York in 1957, he worked for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill architectural firm for few years. He then started his own career in 1963 (Jodidio). His works have included houses, museums, medical facilities, commercial buildings, major civic commissions, and the city hall (Richard Meier). Meier built The Getty Center in the late 20th century at Los Angeles. From 1985 to 1997, he spent most of his time to work on the Getty architecture. It was an immense project and marked a success in Meier’s career. The Getty Center was his major architecture and inspired him to create many incredible works later including San Jose City Hall. This building was built during the early 21st century and located in the heart of San Jose City. Therefore, this paper is to introduce the speciality and attraction of the Getty Center and its similarities with the City Hall of San Jose. The Getty Center is an accomplishment of the hard work from both Meier and the constructors. The center was constructed on the hilltop site in the Santa Monica Mountains (Architectural Description). The building process was difficult since the workers had to transfer the heavy materials up to the mountain. About 300,000 blocks of travertine and 40,000 aluminum panels were commuted on one road. It was just like a construction that was built on top a pinhead. Furthermore, because Meier wanted to have the tawny colored of marbles to match with his white tradition color, he worked one year in Italy to collect...

Citizen Kane Analysis

...Film History & Research Citizen Kane Film Essay Orson Welles' Citizen Kane Success the first time around is very uncommon. Orson Welles's first feature film richly realizes the full potential of excellent craftsmanship. Citizen Kane is almost indisputably the greatest achievement in the history of filming. In 1941, this film was considered by many as the best film ever made. This film is about the enormous conflict between two twentieth-century icons, publisher William Randolph Hearst and the prodigy of his time, Orson Welles. The rather overwhelming beginning of an opening sequence is still as electrifying as any in the history of movies. That tarnished sign on a forbidding black wire fence is the first thing we see in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. Citizen Kane is a movie about perception and projection. Indeed, with the complex theme the whole movie seems to be placed in a kind of psychological trauma for the viewers. Citizen Kane is a portrait of a public and private figure that remains tantalizingly unfinished. Excellent acting was revealed for the first time as these new roles played out. Orson Welles was a director ahead of his time and his portrayal of Kane shows his acting ability. This film is one of the first films to rely heavily on style and visuals; Citizen Kane uses camera, lighting, and set techniques to show Kane's rise and fall from power. The movie as a whole, though as artistically satisfying as a picture can get...

...CHAPTER 15 – Northern Europe, 1400 to 1500 The art of Northern Europe in the 15th century is typified by precision in rendering surfaces and a wealth of tiny details that came from a tradition of manuscript painting and a belief in the importance of every tiny creation of God's world. The technical development of oil paint provided a paint that dried slowly and was transparent so made possible rich, jewel-like colors and illusionistic textures through a build-up of layers of paint. Works to identify and know in depth: Artist Title Date Jan van Eyck Arnolfini Double Portrait 1400s (15-1) This painting is believed to be a portrait of the Italian merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife, presumably in their home in the Flemish city of Bruges. It is considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art history. Both signed and dated by Van Eyck in 1434, it is, with the Ghent Altarpiece by the same artist and his brother Hubert, the oldest very famous panel painting to have been executed in oils rather than in tempera. The painting was bought by the National Gallery in London in 1842. Claus Sluter Well of Moses 1400s (15-2) The work was executed for Philip’s son, John the Fearless (1371-1419), in a style combining the elegance of International Gothic with a northern realism, but with a monumental quality unusual in either. It was carved from stone quarried in Asnières, France and consisted of a large crucifixion...

...assignment opportunities but they remained a negligible minority compared to men. The first decade of the twenty-first century has witnessed a gradual increase in the number and visibility of women in international assignments. Through a comprehensive review of the literature over the period from 1980 to now, this article charts the emerging themes and changes in the tone of discourse: from when organizations were debating whether to “give women a chance” through attempts to identify and remove “blockages” to women’s progress to, most recently, structural changes in the expatriate assignment and claims for women’s superior affinity to operating internationally. We highlight gaps in the current literature and propose a platform for future research. We conclude with recommendations for practice. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mudgett was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire [4] to Levi Horton Mudgett and Theodore Page Price, both of whom were descended from the first non-native settlers in the area. According to the 2007 Most Evil profile on Holmes, his father was a violent alcoholic, and his mother was a devout Methodist who read the Bible to Herman. He claimed that, as a child, schoolmates forced him to view and touch a human skeleton after discovering his fear of the local doctor. It has been said that he appeared to be unusually intelligent at an early age. Still there were haunting signs of what was to come. He expressed an interest in medicine, which reportedly led him to practice surgery on animals. Some accounts indicate that he may have been responsible for the death of a friend. ...the aspects of the arts - architecture, calligraphy; aspect of religion is not part the criteria. Is this true? This paper will aim to determine whether the statement above is true. It will also try to analyze the important role of religion and its necessities for the rise of society in general, and in state in particular. This will be done through the review of two important literatures, The Holy Quran and The Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun itself. PROBLEM STATEMENT Ibnu Khaldun denies that the divine guidance is a necessary condition for the rise of society (‘umran ) in general, and the state in particular. Do you agree? Why? DEFINITION WHAT IS CIVILIZATION? Dictionary.com defined civilization as: 1. an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached. 2. those people or nations that have reached such a state. 3. any type of culture, society, etc., of a specific place, time, or group. Furthermore, according to Ibnu Khaldun civilization is when people start to work together and form a society, just as what is being written in his famous book ‘The Muqaddimah’ : “Several human beings, with their God-given power of thinking, begin to cooperate with each other and to form some kind of social organization, 'umran results.” However, Prof. Dr. Abdullahil Ahsan concluded in his paper that civilization is: “ when a group of people are motivated by certain ideas and beliefs, develop trust with each...
