The Goal- Three Important Aspects

I did not know what to expect when I began reading this novel about a manufacturing plant. However, after reading it I am very glad that it was part of the course. It was interesting to see some of the concepts mentioned in the novel were also covered in the textbook. It gave the novel a sense of creditability. Dr. Goldratt does a wonderful job in transforming Industrial Engineering jargon into something anyone can sit down and read. The Goal follows Alex Rogo and his quest to save his plant and his marriage in the process. There are three aspects of the novel I found to be very compelling. The first was how invested Alex was to his job and town. The second was how Alex was able to solve many of plant’s issues through collaboration and teamwork. The third was how Dr. Goldratt used Jonah to teach Alex and not merely give him answers to his questions. I believe that all three of these aspects will help me in the future as I enter the professional world. The novel begins on very dire circumstances; Bill Peach has threatened to close the plant in three months if Alex is unable to turn it around. The plant has been hemorrhaging money and is unable to ship out orders on time. No matter how hard they try the orders never can be shipped on time. Alex has a very hard time understanding why this is in so far as he “thinks” gremlins might be at it. In the beginning Alex is very unsure of himself and is constantly doubting his abilities. He knows he’s smart and the plant has many competent people and good technology, but still, something is missing. Through all this self-doubt and the plant being in bad shape Alex somehow manages to muster enough strength to not give up. After remembering the conversation he had with Jonah and subsequently talking to him, Alex finds the courage he needs to go the distance. He says he will not quit until the plant has closed. I found this to be very inspiring for two reasons. First, in order to succeed at something ones needs that drive to keep going no matter how difficult the situation. The constant self-doubt does no good in the long run. Second, Alex’s willingness to contact Jonah in the first place shows initiative. Whereas others may have been reluctant to purse after the third phone call, Alex continued well into the night. This showed Alex really cared about the plant and his job. I think this was an important lesson for me because I learned that putting effort in the present will payoff in the future. As Malcolm Gladwell pointed out in his book, Outliers, people seldom reach the top without help from others. This is no different in the case for Alex. When Alex finally figures out the goal of the plant is to make money he enlists the help of Lou, the accountant. As the book progresses Alex needs to work with Bob, Stacey, Ralph, and Lou. These are the four people that help Alex in turning around the plant. Alex highlights the fact to them about the plant being on the chopping block, but they stick with him nevertheless. Bob the production manger is constantly running around the plant to make sure everything is meeting the standards of Alex. Though it is his job, Alex pointed out in the beginning that Bob is a very dependable man and that if he told to do a task, it was guaranteed to be finished on time. Stacey is the person who oversees the inventory. She is very supportive of Alex and is very good at her job. When Jonah is at the plant or on the phone, she is a very active participant. Ralph is the tech specialist who helps with the various programming needed in the plant. He finds a way to predict when the orders will be shipped and when the bottlenecks will need parts from the non-bottlenecks. Lou is the accountant and is the one who helps Alex come up with the three measurements used to assess the plant, ROI, NI, and cash flow. With a combination of these people Alex is able to fix the ailing plant. It shows how important it is to surround yourself with people who are just as invested as you are. Lou did not have to stay, he could have retired early and leave the failing plant behind him. Instead he chooses to help Alex and the plant. This shows the importance of working with others, even if they disagree at first. I liked how Jonah never spelled out the answers for Alex. He made him think and come up with his own solutions. After doing some research I found this is called the Socratic method. Instead of just giving him the answers, Jonah had discussion with Alex about the plants problems. Jonah even encouraged him to discuss the issues with the other people in the plant. I think this is very important because it gives a person a chance to work out the answer himself or herself and feel good about it. In the long run any problems faced in the future will not feel so daunting. Alex will have had a way to figure out what the problem is and the various ways in which he can approach it. I found it to be annoying at first when Jonah would lead Alex on and not answers Alex’s question outright. However, the further I read the more I appreciated Jonah’s tactic. It gave me a chance to self-reflect and ask myself if sometimes I am too quick to ask for help when faced with a problem. Instead of seeking the answer, I should ponder the thought process in coming to the solution. After reading the Goal, I have realized the importance of diligence, working with good people, and working through difficult problems without seeking answers first. I think these three aspects will help me in my professional carrier in the future. Like Alex, if I am faced with any serious problems I will be sure to incorporate these aspects. I am very grateful that I had a chance to read such an important novel.

Reflections

...Reflection on What I have learned in This Course Blake Bass Hum/111 January 27, 2013 Sean Brinker Reflection on What I have Learned in This Course Have you ever thought about the critical thinking process? Very seldom does anyone think about if they are using their critical thinking skills or not. I have learned that I did not effectively use critical thinking, and I also learned how to use my critical thinking skills in order to help me think more clearly. Critical thinking is something everyone needs to be aware of and also they need to learn how to improve their critical thinking skills. When using critical thinking, someone is self-guided and self-disciplined in thinking that tries to take their level of reasoning that is done naturally to a higher level of thinking. It is also a goal to improve someone’s thought process by analyzing and evaluating information and situations. The three most significant things that I have learned in this class have been how to redefine the way I see things. I have started looking at situations from other people’s perspective so that I can have a better understanding of how they view things. Before I started this class I always thought my ideas were right and no one could tell me otherwise. The second thing I have learned is instead of playing on the computer and such I could reflect on my day. I have been working on this and it has helped in my critical thinking process. The third thing I have learned is to keep an intellectual...

Weekly Reflection

...Week 3 Team A Reflection Maria Parrish Week three covered the appropriate use of the terms group and team and conflict resolution. Even though those two terms have a common goal, the way they go by accomplishing those goals is what sets them apart. When working as part of a team you have the opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other to achieve a common goal. A group can develop into a team if it has a coordinated effort to reach a common goal, but in a group setting each member works independently to reach that goal. Deciding to put together a team or group depends on the assignment at hand. I really enjoyed discussing conflict resolution with the class. I believe that conflict can’t be avoided, when people interact there is always going to be a little friction. Every day we deal with different types of people, different character traits, upbringings, cultures, and different backgrounds. It is almost impossible for people with such a diverse background, professional skill levels and work ethics not to bump heads at some point. Encouraging open communication and constructive criticism, but still respect others opinions, ideas, and views can support a healthy balance. I was amazed how different and how similar most of the responses were. The class continuously shares experiences, ideas, views and suggestions respectfully and with an open mind. The team assignment simulation was another eye opener; it surprised me how easy it was to take the wrong course of action...

Becoming a Writer

...BECOMING A WRITER January of 2011 was the beginning of a special adventure in my life as a student. I took an English class 0890, at Utah Valley University. Now, in the last days of this class, almost four months later, I can look back and see myself with a lot of problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the students...

...help you grow as a person? I have a lot of traits that help me grow as a person. One is being a very optimistic person. Even though there are a lot of challenges being a student myself, I make it a point to always look at the brighter side of life. I never let negative vibes absorb my energy although sometimes I cannot avoid it. If it happens, I relax my mind and body so that I will have enough time to think about things and control my emotions. Another trait I possess is being a very passionate person. If I am assigned to do a task, I give my 100% and I do it with all my heart. I exert all the time and effort I have just to achieve the results I desire and expect. I am also a compassionate kind of person. Before I judge someone, I imagine myself in his/her situation to be able to weigh things. Service Learning Reflection

...of these experiences I learned new things about what I was doing and learned new things about myself. As I went to each of these situations I was nervous as to what was expected of us. In each experience the person was good at explaining what they wanted to be achieved for the time I was there. When helping at the Crittenton Center she was ready for our group and everything planned out as to what each person would do. My group of three was to paint a small bathroom. We were all able to use out past experiences of painting to help finish the project. When helping out with Kayla Nieman, I helped her clean and organize her classroom and helped coach afterschool basketball with her. I learned the most with the coaching. I had to learn how to be patient with the players and allow them time to learn the new skill. When working with Lacey Hallstrom, I helped clean up outside. The experience went well because I had known her previously before. I think this made it comfortable for both of us. When helping out with my family, I found out that I can deal with this bad situation. I think helping out directly with looking for items in the house helped me and my family cherish what we had. Also, with this happening there has been lots of phone calls and paperwork. I have learned how to do some important paperwork and learned lots of different options as if something bad like happened again. Throughout these experiences I found that I really didn’t change as a leader. I have always been open...

Ethical Theories

...There are a lot of things we have learned in this course from ethical theories to moral reasoning and I think what we have learned in these last five weeks will help and should help us in a decision making process in the future. Virtue Ethics says that a person should make a decision on behalf of them rather than their culture or laws, as long as they are a good person, it is a good decision. It is person based rather than cultural. Virtue, practical wisdom and eudemonia, are the three main concepts that virtue ethics’ enforces. Aristotle and Plato are virtue ethics principle ethicists. Utilitarianism’s principal concepts are: egalitarianism, hedonism, consequentialism. This ethical system is based on a perception that a choice is moral when it has a result that is more positive for people. Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-73) who was actually one of Bentham’s students, are, ethicist’s involved in developing utilitarianism. Social contact is that the persons’ moral or obligations are dependent on a contract or agreement. To be polite, not cheat or lie to one another in marriage, which marriage is like a contract. The ethicists that were involved in this were Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Individual relativism says that is not a universal standard. “All values are subjective because they are based upon the personal preferences that express one’s own self-interest” (Argosy, 2015). What you says goes basically, what you think is the...

The Review of the Goal

...The Goal was the first manufacturing management book I read in English. There is no theoretical framework in the book, so it is both interesting and easy to understand. This book was written by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox, tells a fictional story about Alex Rogo, a manufacturing plant manager who struggled with situation that his plant faced with losses and shut, with the help of Jonah and through the efforts of the team, Rogo finally found out the way to save the plant and increase production efficiency, compress production time and reduce the production cost. It ultimately changed the entire plant as well as the situation of the company as a whole. It gave me a different insight into an upper level of management achieving a purpose. For the factories, chaotic production system, higher production costs and longer lead times are common problems. The theory of Constraints which was introduced in the book is a good tool to help us solve these problems. Besides this, what I learned in the book is far more than the application of the theory itself. First, find the goal. When Rogo sought a solution of factory predicament from Jonah, the first question this physicist asked him was what is the goal of the factory? This seems like a simple question. But soon Rogo found that this question is not simple, he realized that the "goal" is the starting point and the final destination of the managers, what he did before was just specious stereotypes in guiding decision-making. In fact...

The source of motivation for this goal mainly lies in the job market. Most jobs are now starting to require a Bachelor’s degree, even for ‘entry level’ positions in the company. Another motivation is for my two step-children. I want to be able to hold a higher paying job so that I am able to help provide the things that they need. My motivations are both intrinsic and extrinsic. My attitude towards my learning process is very positive. I don’t feel that there is going to be much that is going to be able to hold me back. My career goal is to someday own my own bakery. My source of motivation comes from my grandma as well as my love for baking. I have been around family baking secrets for as long as I can remember and I would love to be able to share some of them with the general public. My motivations for my career goal are also both intrinsic and extrinsic. The main goal is intrinsic because I would love to hold a job where I thoroughly enjoy doing what I love. My attitude towards my learning process doesn’t really affect my dream of wanting to own my own business some day.
