...multiple questions that must be answered when discussing Fox Butterfield’s book, All God’s Children. The first question that must be answered in order to discuss All God’s Children must be about the historical and cultural forces. These were the cultural and historical influences that produced the criminal behavior in the Bosket family. There were many different factors that came into play throughout the history of the Bosket family. One of these examples is that someone must fight and be “bad” in order to gain respect or to be considered a man. After all, this idea of being “bad” actually became almost like tradition for the men in the Bosket family. The Bosket family only knew how to be bad men. Every man in the Bosket family had a reputation, and each one of the men wanted to keep their reputation. The men in the Bosket family would fight because all they really had was their name. Therefore, these men almost needed to maintain their tough guy images in order to feel good about themselves, but also to keep their reputation. Another part of the history of the Bosket family, and really a lot of different families is the self fulfilling prophecy idea. For the self fulfilling prophecy idea, the younger generation is expected to do as the generations prior to them. Consequently, for the case of the Bosket family, the men were expected to become bad men. The men had to deal with slavery, but the men still wanted respect. In order to get respect, these men must fight or commit crime...

...You get the blessing of God’s wisdom. Often we are fighting the wrong person. We project our anger onto people when quite often we ourselves have made a bad decision or we are being attacked by our enemy satan. Either way, the resolution is not in arguing with our spouse, kids or co-workers. The resolution is in praying about our thoughts, actions and attitudes and praying effectively against the real enemy. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal or worldly, but spiritual weapons that know how to hit the right target (2 Corinthians 10:4). So Twitter rants won’t do it and un-Friending someone won’t fix it and yelling will not change it. But prayer, well prayer changes everything (James 5:16). When you fight the right battle, you reap the rewards. Like power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). In this crazy world, we need these things more than we need to one-up someone in an argument. What you say has the power to give life or bring death so be careful with your words (Proverbs 18:21). This life is tough and we will have to fight. The Bible even tells us that the Kingdom will suffer violence (Matthew 11:12). But make...

...God. Atypically, the lamas will not use the ‘normal’ alphabet; but their own alphabet where they have invented and written in their holy books. In over three centuries they have been typing these names down, and it would take another fifteen thousand years for them to complete the chore. Therefore, they purchase a special computer, Mark V, from a company, which can calculate and write all the letters down. Compared to the fifteen thousand years the computer will do the job in a hundred days. Later on we are following two engineers named George and Chuck. They have been hired to complete the project. However, one day Sam Jaffe tells Chuck the real purpose of this task. The real purpose is to find all the names and when that is been done, God’s intention with the mankind will be achieved and the universe will cease to exist. Of course, the scientists think that it is pure nonsense and they begin to plan their home travel at the same time, as the computer would be done printing out the names. They are afraid of the monks’ reactions when their task will fail, because of course it will fail. Unfortunately, on their way to the plane, they look up and suddenly without a fuss, the stars are going out. It is clear that the dialogue in the start is a very special one. To me, I think it is the very classic “science vs. religion” when the two men are discussing. However, now religion needs science to fulfil its purpose. Also, it is interesting to see that the scientist Dr. Wagner and the...

...What is morally right and wrong? Recently in class we have discussed moral dilemmas and the way to deal with situations. The Egoist say would that everything one does should benefit herself/himself. The Relativist would say your future decides what is wrong and right. The Utilitarian says whatever produces and increases the overall happiness is what is right. For the Absolutist certain actions are always right or wrong. Divine Command Theorist says that following God’s will is what leads to a moral life. After discussing the different ethical systems in class, I have realized that I agree with Absolutism based on Divine Command. My theory is that no matter what happens, you must follow God’s will. Absolutism is an ethical system based on...

...heavens and the earth.” To anyone; that verse may sound crazy, but that’s where faith comes into play. Faith can be defined as believing in someone or something when there is no visual evidence. When we think of the natural world and how it came to be we just refer to Genesis 1 when The Lord said, “let there be…”. God did not have to create the universe; he chose to create it because He is love; love is best expressed toward something or someone else – so God created the world and people as an expression of love. God created the universe because he loves us. Some people tend to object the idea of God creating the universe and argue the idea of a “Big Bang Theory”, this is where your faith as a Christian is tested and we must remember the love that God has for us and know that He is the reason for everything that is good. On a personal standpoint, I find it amazing and quite humbling to know that God spoke everything into existence. I know that the world is not a product of blind chance and probability because God created it in the perfect image. The Bible not only tells us that God created the world; better yet, who God is. It reveals God’s personality, his character, and his plan for all creation. Human identity can be understood from a better standpoint when we refer to Genesis 1:27, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” We are all created in God’s image. When it comes to dealing with everyday life, this...

...1Like, 1Prayer! It’s hard to move forward when you don’t know where you’re headed or why. God’s plan gives us the answers to life’s most basic questions like, "Where did I come from?" "What’s my purpose here?" And, "What happens when I die?" Knowing the answers gives us hope and helps us find peace and joy, but we can't deny the fact that one thing that makes this life so hard sometimes is that we’re out of God’s physical presence. Not only that, but we can’t remember our pre-earth life which means we have to operate by faith rather than sight. God didn’t say it would be easy, but He promised His spirit would be there when we needed Him. Even though it feels like it sometimes, we’re not alone in our journey. We tend to pray always when we are faced with such unsurmountable problems at hand and sometimes we came up with superficial ideas on our own on how to somewhat talked to God, like for example, before I think that praying or prayer itself is only a device that I should come up or formulate by myself to be able to talk to God, thus my prayer life becomes like a planned routine every day that I will recite this kind of prayers in an orderly fashion with a given amount, also I attend worship/prayer meetings that I think will help in my religious life not knowing the fact that I am doing it wrong all the time because as what St Jean of Chantal said, “The best method of prayer is not to have any, because prayer is not obtained by methods or devices but through grace.” Because...

...I Am Sayings Paper BIBL 323 B12 The Gospel of John Liberty University Abstract Jesus Christ was the most influential and the most controversial of all God’s teachers and prophets. His time spent discussing His deity by use of metaphors such as the I AM sayings lead the Pharisees to believe less in Him as the messiah, and more in him as being crazy. To understand Jesus’s claim to be the good shepherd, it is important to review the evidence of the claim compare it to the Old Testament which points toward Christ and apply the finds to the claims of Jesus’ deity. Jesus the Good Shepherd John wrote his Gospel of Jesus Christ for two reasons. The first reason was to communicate the message of Christ by providing examples of His miracles and his teaching in order to generate belief in the unbeliever that Jesus was who he said he was: the Son of God (Towns, 2002). The second reason was that those who then believed would have eternal life because of the faith that Jesus Christ was truly the fulfillment of the Messianic prophesies as Savior and Lord (Ibid). Jesus’ teaching style was not always easy to understand, and often created dissention between those who believed, and those who did not. He lessons linked who He was to prophesy about Him made by Old Testament prophets. In John’s Gospel there are eight lessons that are known as the “I Am” sayings that exemplify this teaching style by linking Him to well-known images and symbols provided in the Old Testament...

...Benjamin to Egypt, it showed he that his brothers in fact did not recognize him and were not there to spy or harm him again. This is important because Benjamin was a favored child, such as Joseph. The moral of the story is all about forgiveness. God put Joseph through many struggles; his brothers leaving him in the pit, being sold into slavery, accused of lying with Potiphar’s wife, imprisonment and being forgotten by the butler. Each of these happenings could have caused Joseph to become pessimistic, unforgiving and possibly evil; although Joseph had God with him through all his strife, the narrartor tell us.. God had a plan for Joseph to triumph all negative things and show forgiveness and spread it through his story. He believes that God’s plan eventually led him to saving his brothers lives. If not for all the bad things that happened to Joseph, his brothers may not have been granted grain during the famine. There would have been another person in charge instead of Joseph being there that denied the brothers and surely they would have died. Also, Joseph’s brothers may never have been set on the right path if their jealousy had continued throughout their lives. Jacob had a suspicion that his sons had done away with Joseph because he loved and favored him so much. The...

...WHY MEN NEED VISIONS AND DREAMS 1) God’s foundational key to Gods strategy for ruling earth from heaven is the male man. 2) God’s original purpose is to extend his Heavenly kingdom to Earth. He wanted to colonize earth with heaven; he wanted to extend his invisible kingdom to this visible earth. 3) God’s goal was to fill the earth with the culture of heaven. When a kingdom colonizes a territory, it fills the territory with its culture. 4) One of the great mistakes of the church is it has reversed God’s program. It preoccupies people to leave earth, when in fact the instruction was to occupy till He comes. 5) Man was never created to dominate other men, but to dominate earth. You and I were created to dominate the resources of earth in the area of gifting. God gave all of us dominion, not over people, not even over your wife. 6) Discovery of your purpose is the source of your personal leadership. Leadership has to do with self discovery than it has to do with leading people. True leaders never seek followers, followers are attracted to the gift of the leader. 7) Vision is a preview of your purpose. 8) Man is spirit and spirits have no gender. You’ll never find in the Bible a reference to a male/female spirit. God took the first man, and put him in a body, and the first body God made was a male. Man comes in two models: male and female. 9) God only made only 1-human from the soil and he never went back. Not even women came from the soil. Out of the male...

...Objective: To realize that faith must be put to action for it to draw the power of God. Faith is not dormant. Bible Text: Mk. 2:1-12 Memory Verse: “Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone.” (Jas. 2:17) INTRODUCTION Many Christians can define faith and may even be able to give lectures on the subject but several do not understand how to get it to work for them. They do not know how to use it to trigger the power if God that they need in their situation. Faith is not just something one keeps on the inside of them. Faith speaks and acts. When a person has the true faith, he changes his position or stand on the stand on true faith, he changes his position or stand on the basis of it. In other words, he takes action based on his conviction and truly expects God to reach out and back him up in confirmation of his word. God cannot fail to honour such a man or woman by releasing the power they need to change their situation we shall study three cases of faith demonstration that met with Jesus’ approval in the bible in this lesson. 1. THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD 2. ZACCHEUS SEES JESUS 3. THE SICK OF THE PALSY THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD (MK.5:25-34) This woman who remained nameless in the bible had some things in common with the other cases we shall study. (a) she had a hopeless problem. (Mk. 5:25-26) she had spent all she had yet she steadily grew worse. (b) She heard about Jesus (Mk. 5:27) she must have heard how he went about...

Following your heart and having others follow in your footsteps is even better.”“Speak with your body, think with your heart and love with your soul.”“Don’t be insecure with others. ...Mankind has often attributed bewildering phenomena to the supernatural, specifically to God or gods. From ancient civilizations to today, God has been the suspected force behind a wide spectrum of events. From the movement of celestial bodies to the workings of microorganisms, to astonishing moments in sports, God, usually within the context of religion, is the magician behind it all. A higher force may exist but presenting it as truth or even likely is not sensible. Religion negatively affects rationality with its doctrines, scriptures, and governance because it promotes ignorance. Ignorance comes in many forms; ignorance of evidence, moral perspective, other faiths, equality, etc. Theorizing a higher force is neither illogical nor dangerous, but piling on details contrary to what reason dictates does just that. It was sensible for ancient civilizations to do such things, and the same goes for primitive cultures today. However, these ideas should not subsist in the modernized parts of the world. The rise of religious beliefs within past civilizations does seem reasonable when considering the time period. Calling the ancient Egyptians “dumb” or their beliefs “stupid” is naïve since they lacked scientific knowledge and the means to obtain it. To the Egyptians, the sun and moon appeared as if they were moving and switching places periodically. The “mover” responsible for these actions was labeled Ra, the sun god. Now we know that Earth’s rotation affects the amount of sunlight...

...writing, and has proven very effective in creating a social standard. For example, Moses, Jesus, Allah, were used as the religious authority figures; whereas, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Caitlyn Jenner all promote some type of fashion, sex symbol, or social practice for society to follow. These social norms change according to current culture, previous held taboos become normal. Given that, Pastor Nanette, The Great Awakening Church from Portsmouth, Va., supports LGBT members and when questioned about, LGBT and definition of sin, she claims people lack the understanding of God’s diversity for creating all people. In other words, she viewed homosexuality as a creation from God, and that most Christian lack the understanding of the Bible to decide God’s plan for people. Similarly, the Roman Empire and their acceptance of vial sexual practices like: homosexuality, group orgies, bestiality, and the raping of slaves was normal practices by the aristocratic class. The influence by Rome on people’s standard of morality was controlled by the rich, who abused the poor, and now our Empire’s ability is far more imposing than Rome’s. How far will people’s lust be accepted as normal, marring their goat, computer, mom/dad, or a robot? Furthermore, this social conformity to accept others, skin color, sex Man/Woman, and or physical disabilities, have failed those individuals who lack the means to voice their opinion...

...Luther, Lewis, and the Mortification of Sin “Be a sinner and sin boldly, but believe and rejoice in Christ even more boldly.” These words were uttered by the great reformer and theologian Martin Luther. Martin Luther certainly was a strange, contradictory man. On one hand, he was at the forefront of an intellectual movement that would change the world forever, ushering in the modern era, but on the other hand, he was a depressed and bipolar maniac who could be found screaming his throat out and rolling on the floor, bawling his eyes out. Perhaps it was his “crazy” nature which enabled him to have such a clear, crystal sharp view on what John Owen called the “mortification of sin.” The quote referenced above sums up in fifteen words the answer to what millions across the centuries have pondered—how does a Christian fight against sin? At first glance, this quote seems heretical. As the Catholic priest Father Patrick O’Hare said about it, “If the author of such an infamous suggestion as is involved in the words ‘sin boldly’ was not a child of Satan, none ever labored so strenuously in advancing his soul-destroying principles.” But was Luther really a heretic? Was the Father of the Reformation indeed, as O’Hare mildly puts, “a child of Satan?” I would argue that Monsignor O’Hare is in the wrong. A study of Luther’s works will show that he was fond of strong hyperbole (as a quick glance through The Bondage of the Will would show). What is Luther really saying in...

...Vulnerability to a Witch Hunt The fact is that Salem, Massachusetts is all about God and doing God’s work, yet they are believing a bunch of young girls and hanging people without evidence. People believed whoever the person before could blame, no one ever would think of anyone possibly lying or acting? If making a city vulnerable to a witch trial could be easy, Salem and the people living there definitely caused it. In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible”, religion, personal vendettas, and human faults, made the individuals and society in Salem vulnerable to a witch hunt. To start off one of many reasons Salem society was vulnerable to a witch hunt was religion. Religion was the main priority in Salem and almost anything said or done that wasn’t by the bible was witchery or evil. “At any rate very few indians were converted and Salem folk believed that the virgin forest was the devil’s last preserve.” This quote is simply explaining how easily things were blamed and or believed and how religion was the base of everything. Puritans believe if you swear on the bible...
