The Golden Goblet is a book about a young boy named Ranofer and his ambitions to become a great goldsmith like his father before him. His father died a few years earlier, and now was living with his stepbrother Gebu. Gebu was a cruel brother and used Ranofer for his own gain. First he sent Ranofer to work at a goldsmith shop, but Ranofer found out that Gebu was using him to steal gold, Ranofer told his close friend Heqet, and they made a plan to stop the stealing without having it linked to Ranofer. When their plan succeeded, Gebu quit Ranofer’s job at the goldsmith’s shop and took him to be an apprentice to himself, as a stonecutter.

The work as a stonecutter was very rough and hard, injuries were very common. Ranofer hated this work and dreamed about someday running away and becoming a goldsmith. He believed that Gebu had given up on cheating people, but then one day he heard Gebu talking to one of his closest friends about some plans of stealing some gold. He followed them into the tomb, then quickly made his escape when he heard them coming back up the tunnel. He ran and ran until he found the officials of the city he told them what he saw, but they did not believe him and took him to the Queen to have him killed for telling lies about the Queen’s parent’s tomb. So when the queen saw him she asked a question about what the inside of the tomb looked like and he answered the question easily. She believed Ranofer, and sent her best men to arrest Gebu and his friend. She also thanked Ranofer for protecting the tomb of her parents, and granted him anything he wanted. The only thing he asked for was a donkey, so he could work for food. She agreed and sent him on his way with the best donkey in the city.
