Fear of being considered an outsider and social stigmatization drives many people to evaluate, and reevaluate every decision they consider. Often times we let these fears overwhelm us and inhibit any further progression beyond fantasizing how the scenario would play out. Even though there are a vast number of social dynamics that influence an individual’s actions and perception, we must recognize that these interactions are a part of a social structure that can be challenged, if we dare to explore the unknown. In “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, T.S. Eliot uses a dramatic monologue to address and illustrate many common issues revolving around social perceptions. One such issue is a common theme addressed at the very beginning and mentioned throughout this literary work—reputation. The Epigraph depicts a conversation between Dante and Guido concerning the reasons for Guido’s plummet to the lowest depths of hell. Historians often describe themselves as detectives, seeking out a kind of truth among the conflicting evidence of the past. There is, furthermore, a large and growing subgenre of historical crime fiction. From C.J. Sansom to Philip Pullman, from Orhan Pamuk to Walter Mosley, from Ellis Peters to Boris Akunin, novelists have been keen to use the past as a backdrop for their stories of detection and mystery. The most famous historical detective might be Brother William of Baskerville in Umberto Eco’s peerless The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa, 1980). Recently we have seen a flowering of historical crime fiction as the subgenre attains maturity and becomes increasingly popular and innovative. First, look over the words on our SAT High-Frequency Word List, which you’ll find on the following pages. Each of these words has appeared (as answer choices or as question words) from eight to forty times on SATs published in the past two decades. Next, look over the words on our Hot Prospects List, which appears immediately after the High-Frequency List. Though these words don’t appear as often as the high-frequency words do, when they do appear, the odds are that they’re key words in questions. As such, they deserve your special attention. Now you’re ready to master the words on the High-Frequency and Hot Prospects Word Lists. First, check off those words you think you know. Then, look up all the words and their definitions in our 3,500 Basic Word List. Pay particular attention to the words you thought you knew. See whether any of them are defined in an unexpected way.
